I usually go 4:3 for anything that was displayed on a TV, but I usually stretch GBA to 16:9 because I'm a monster (and it's pretty hard to tell the difference anyway).

Am I not understanding the auto save state/ load state functionality? I have both flags as true in my retroarch.cfg. Now If I play a SNES game, hit hotkey+start to exit, it doesn't do anything. I didn't manually define a folder to save stuff in, is that an issue? Or am I not understanding how it works? It's really not a deal breaker for me so I don't necessarily care.

It's a big download but you won't be loading 50 gigs on to the Pi. A massive chunk of any MAME romset is random casino games, pornographic mahjong games, and five versions of the same game from different regions which you'll want to drop. You can use tools like romlister to do it all automatically. Also the Pi can't really handle anything 3D made after like 1995 in MAME (Tekken, etc...) so all the largest games you should drop anyway. After cleaning all the crap and unrunnable games I think it ended up being like 5-7 gigs actually loaded on the Pi?

Yeah, Bluetooth has some input lag. Honestly I was feeling it even through plugged in PS4 controller. The USB controllers I got that look like the originals work with imperceivable input lag, I was playing Donkey Kong Country 1 better than I ever did as a kid with a USB SNES controller. So instead of messing with the pi itself, I'm wondering if anyone knows of any IR controlled outlets that would talk to my Harmony 650? Then I could just shut down and turn off that activity and everything will work as needed when I turn on the activity the next time and I never have to touch anything (device is in a closet).

I've got one mounted in an actual SNES shell (not even yellowed), but it's been giving me headaches. It started overheating on me (thermometer indicator up in the corner), and after opening it up and doing some rearranging to try and give it some more air, the controller ports cut out, it's still overheating, and I get a constant voltage indicator instead of just when doing file-heavy stuff.

So now I've got another project to try and fix all of this, gonna pick up some heat sinks and take my multimeter to it and figure out what's going on. If this case had room for some extra storage inside, it would be a nice change though. I've got a 256gb flash drive plugged in, and even with the shell stripped off it, it still wouldn't fit in there.

I am toying with the idea of getting the shell from one of those Seagate external drives with the front USB ports, and turning that into a housing for a Pi and a 2.5" drive, using a splitter on the SATA power for the Pi. I have absolutely no idea if it'll work, but there seems to be enough space and it comes with a 3A power supply, so I think I could make it work using most of the original hardware.

Ugh, the problem with these things is there's so much more tinkering than playing.

Honestly I was kind of impressed that these guys included a nice quick and easy script to setup the shutdown/reset that only requires a simple wget and run to setup.

You should look into the Pi3Cart. I would have bought a kit already if I had any soldering skills at all and could realistically pull off removing two of the USB ports. For $28 bucks it comes with a fan, mounting brackets, and face-plate/buttons.

Question:
Is it possible to bind a button on my controller to function as two different buttons in game?
I'm using a Hori Pokken controller (they're so loving good for retro gaming you guys) and it has four face buttons.
I'd like to be able to bind (X) so it's interpreted as pressing (A)+(B) together to make jumping easier in Double Dragon on the NES.
Can this be done? I can't find any documentation saying either way...

Not yet available for internal download, but grab it from here and throw it into configs/all/emulationstation/themes. It's got a thing where it'll pick a random system or game at the press of a button depending on how deep into the menus you are.

I ended up realizing what I did with my saved game. When I first got my retro pi going I tested all the save state functionality. Then, a couple days back, and I was mashing through hot keys like a moron and I must have loaded a state that was the beginning of the game before I played anything. Oh well, super Metroid is worth replaying.

Also got auto save/load working when I changed it through the Retroarch GUI. Odd that directly editing the cfg didn’t do anything but whatever it works.

Now I’m just getting my rear end handed to me in Mega Man X and Super Ghouls and Ghosts.

Oh, and ETA Prime got around to review that Rasptendo SNES case for the PI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SurTNJAQ5o8

Looks and acts a TON better then the Nespi Raspberry Pi case. While its looks a little chubby the power/reset buttons are completely functional with a safe shutdown/reset script created by Rasptendo. The buttons are push down instead of slide through but for $25 decent case with power/reset buttons its really hard to go wrong. I think I'm gonna get it and fit this Duel heatsink/fan into it.

Well, it took a whole lot of trial and error, and I'm waiting for one last cable to show up to make it a little cleaner, but my "Raspberry Pi inside a hard drive enclosure" project is about finished. Basically, I started with the shell from one of these (the version with the USB ports on the front). I just got one that had the drive removed off eBay, since I didn't need that drive for anything.

The overall plan was to put the Pi and a 2.5" drive where the 3.5" drive originally was, add a button for safe power on/off, and make a hole in the back of it for the HDMI port. Plan A was to use a SATA power splitter and grab 5v off that connection to power the Pi. That fell through when I discovered it doesn't power up the drive until it's connected to a computer.

So for Plan B, I found that the front USB ports were powered even when the drive wasn't, and they put out 1.5A for charging phones and stuff. So I figured I could solder into the power connection for that. But before I broke out the soldering iron, I figured I'd test everything. And sure enough, it cuts off the power to those ports while it's starting up the drive. So it worked fine if I didn't connect to the drive, but as soon as I had that connected it would power off during boot.

Finally, I figured, "Well, why not just tap into the 12v coming in, and convert that down to 5v?" I got a pack of cheap power converter boards off of Amazon, soldered a couple of jumper wires to the back of the board where the barrel connector is attached (after poking around with a multimeter to find which ones were which), and ran it through the board. Dialed it down to 5.25v (seems to be the max safe voltage for a Pi) and gave it a shot, and sure enough it works. The 3A power supply that came with the drive seems to be more than enough juice for the Pi and drive at the same time.

So I connected up an ATXRaspi board, drilled a hole in the top to mount a power/reset button with LED, made a hole in the back and mounted an HDMI coupler, and made one more little hole to loop a USB cable through for the drive. That's what I'm waiting for - I only had a long cable to work with so there's a big loop of cable hanging off the back. I've got a very short one with a right-angle connector coming to clean that up.

The nice thing about that setup is that if the Pi is powered off, I can disconnect the USB from the outside and plug it into a PC to copy ROMs and stuff over to it (and hopefully scrape - I'll be testing that out later), then just reconnect it to go back to normal.

If anyone cares, I'll post a couple of pictures once that cable shows up. I'm just super glad I finally got a setup that fit all my original goals - compact, front USB, room for a hard drive, adequate power (I was getting the lightning bolt all the time), and safe power off. I went through so many iterations before I finally got this one. If I didn't care about the hard drive, I probably would have gone for a Rasptendo since it covers everything else, but I really wanted space for CD games and media for Kodi without dealing with expensive high capacity MicroSD cards or USB dongles.

I ended up receiving my Rasptendo from Hong Kong, not the USA. Still, it only took a few days to show up and I didn't get hit with any unexpected fees. The size is almost 1:1 next to the SNES Classic.

There's not a whole lot to review with regards to RetroPie, because it's RetroPie. It works as expected. The case itself is actually well built in my opinion, what you get in the box is slightly different from what the online instructions suggest as the I/O board that handles the LED, Power and Reset buttons is already attached to the top of the case. All included parts fit exactly as shown and while the provided screws are very small the Pi is secure and nothing rattles around if you shake the device, its weight is also roughly the same as the SNESC. One small feature that I really liked is a small sliding piece of plastic that can be removed if you want to use a wired connection or kept in if you want wireless and don't want an unnecessary hole in your device. There was some actual thought put into the construction of this case.

The first time you load up RetroPie you're required to drop to a terminal and do one wget command to install the required libraries that make the LED and buttons work. Again, no complaints here. The LED lights up, the reset button does what it needs to and holding the power button causes the LED to blink a few times before it suspends the Pi. I don't see much reason to use the buttons unless the system hangs as I connected a wired 360 controller and assigned the center button+start to drop back to the emulator.

I'll be curious to see how this thing lasts over the long term, but it's a solid case. The only minor gripe is the USB extensions for the front ports feel a little loose, both connecting to the Pi itself and when I plug in a controller. I did get a few power warning lights while playing a few games but I had just connected it to a USB port on the back of my television. I have not played any arcade games in a long time, MAME or otherwise, so when I couldn't decide what to test I settled on honoring Goon heritage and fired up some Karnov. What a lovely game!

I have the official case and I've never had any heat issues even with 1080p video playback and long Ridge Racer Type 4 sessions. If I got a second Pi I'd definitely get another official case because it's very well made and solid for how cheap it is and the white/pink color scheme owns.

:dukedog:
I have a dumb issue that, going by my Google skills or lack of isn't too common as I can't find anyone else this has happened to.

So I got the Pi and have been running RetroPie on it for several months, no real problems or anything, and I have a few types of controllers configured for it but I mainly use my PS4 game pad to play and an old USB keyboard for when I want to use any of the configuration stuff, awesome.

Now today, while playing, I feel stupid because I didn't catch the message that popped up, but basically PS4 controllers are now dead to to it. Like EmulationStation doesn't detect them AT ALL and can't configure them or anything. And the LED on the controller doesn't even turn on when I plug it into the Pi (which normally it would). The controllers definitely work and are charged though as they both have power and I can turn on/start playing my PS4 with them once they're unplugged from the Pi. The keyboard is totally undetected also, but again immediately works if I plug it into anything else. The cord I'm using works when I want to charge any of those same controllers or my phone, and it's also the same cord I've been using to play on the Pi since I got it a few months ago.

So that made me think something was wrong with the Pi's USB ports somehow?

But if I plug any other controller in there, EmulationStation DOES detect them, and lets me configure them as normal, and I can navigate everything in EmulationStation and RaspiConfig and so on with them just fine, but then upon loading up any game it will only have two or three buttons configured in weird places. So in a way it's almost even worse.

Is this a messed up USB port? Is the Pi not getting enough/too much power (I'm not overlocking it or anything and am just using it to play SNES and earlier systems)? Has anyone had a situation like this where it's been fine and then during gameplay everything on the Pi decides your gamepad/keyboard/whatever's in the USB ports doesn't exist?
