Thank you for your contribution. e: I'm not a fan of all of his material in his standup special: "Elephant In The Room" but i found the material relating to safe-sex, food and fishing to be pretty humorous (the fish bit being my favorite). a talented man who had a skill of using his audience as part of his material. Cool that you still gave it a chance after the initial reaction. I'm only sad that there aren't that many specials from the guy, I'd love to be able to see more of his work. Here's a little hilarious skit from Bill Burr about Lance Armstrong during an interview with Conan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9YL04v-J5U Palpek fucked around with this message at 22:06 on Sep 26, 2017 |

I'm finding a lot of Patrice O'Neal's other standup on youtube staggeringly easily. The comedy store standup is has a lot of vulgarity but some of it is pretty funny. I recommend the toned down material in a timed link of this episode of just for laughs from 2005 (legal to link?). NWS for language. But his work does not even come nearly as close to the moment when Bill Hicks was unhinged and testing barriers of what could and could not be said on television: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=osH-0YfKVEg I found Bill Burr's stance on this topic to be incredibly accurate and of course, funny. I never tried to put much care into social icons and celebrities in the first place. I just take bits and pieces from what I find applicable. I think you'd like Bill Burr's thoughts on the time Sean Penn went to pal around and interview with druglord El Chappo. Yobgoblin fucked around with this message at 08:35 on Sep 27, 2017 |

I enjoy Bill Burr's stand-ups and interviews with him but I don't really like his podcast. Basically I like him in his strict comedian role where he works on being funny and not when he's himself ranting into the mic. To each their own though. Here's something I enjoyed listening to in a more meta comedy way - Ricky Gervais hosts a discussion about working as a comedian with Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Louis CK, it's pretty cool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKY6BGcx37k

I agree, his podcast is not as funny as his standup and I find most of it to be unhinged but he makes some points i consider but do not take to heart. I actually forgot about the talk show Talking Funny. Thanks for linking that. It brings up good points and the one I take from it most is the level of care I should have for certain things I say to people VS why should I care of the feedback is negative. I find this to be educating in a number of ways that relate to trying to be funny. I completely forgot all about Ricky Gervais. I'm curious on your opinion on some of his stand up. His jokes from the special: Out Of England 2 are hit/miss with me. Yobgoblin fucked around with this message at 06:10 on Oct 15, 2017 |

Burr's pretty hit and miss with me. When he's slightly constrained by being on Conan I think he generates some really great stuff. When he's more free to do and say whatever's on his mind I don't often find him as interesting. There's a taste of, I don't know, bland bitterness to his setups sometimes. Like it doesn't land as humorous, or insightful, or witty, or even really raw. Just an angry guy being angry. For all I know he's changed but that's how a lot of his earlier stuff strikes me. Anyway his great Lance Armstrong clip was dropped earlier so here's my other favorite of his. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew6fv9UUlQ8 Dark humor's really touch and go for me, though, and I'll admit that. Like I'm pretty much pro-Patrice O'Neal but I can't stand Bill Hicks. For those two at least there's a lot to do with the delivery. O'Neal made an awful punchline sound like an inevitability that you might as well laugh at. Hicks always reminded me of someone I knew in high school who thought they were deep and liked to joke about bringing a gun to school. That's just me though. Also--and this is a blatantly unfair comparison--I find Louis CK's presentation of growth and understanding and sucker punch comedy to be much more interesting and relatable than Hicks' style. To contribute, this was my favorite standup joke when I was a kid. Feel free to judge me for it. Comedy Central spliced it to use as a bumper for a while back when they did stuff like that in the 90s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKS1MDNHMY8&t=70s

the best takedown of "important" standup was when norm macdonald talked with gilbert gottfried about bill hicks and janine garofolo. unfortunately, what was once an annoying curiosity in the world of comedy has become dominant. as norm subtly pointed out, it usually lacks laughs and makes up for it in philosophical quotes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtAkLGLviGk&t=3634s it's a bit unfair to bill hicks because he had some good bits

Anyway his great Lance Armstrong clip was dropped earlier so here's my other favorite of his. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ew6fv9UUlQ8 I agree that his some of his statements on his podcasts are over the top and less funny than his standup and interviews. Salt is salt. Fine interview you linked. I agree that it is dumb to put so much faith and fame in someone who didn’t appear to do that much work in the end. Steve jobs may have lead people to create things but he was over-rated in my opinion. I love the thoughts on Lance Armstrong interview. It reminded me that someone isn’t always what they appear to be. I like the interview where Bill Burr expressed his thoughts on the Paula Deen and other celebrity racist scandals. I am a big fan of dark humor, myself. I have taken an interest to certain comedy genres when I have a different state of mind. At times, I disliked both Bill Hicks and Patrice O’Neal and other times, I loved their work. For myself, it often depends on what I’m in the mood to watch/listen to. Have you ever seen the show Tough Crowd? Here’s a clip I found funny and topical that reminds me of today’s issues in society. My apologies if anything I linked was offensive to you or anyone else, that was not my intention. My intention is to attempt to open people’s minds to parts of comedy they don’t enjoy at their leisure. Thank you for your contributions. I found your link of Laura Kightlinger to be not only dark but simple and sweet. I found it refreshing, a fine twist for the crowd who seemed to enjoy it. I’m not sure if this is her youtube channel so here’s an old clip of her preforming on Conan O’Brian’s show where you can see some of her previous material from her half hour stand-up. get that OUT of my face posted:the best takedown of "important" standup was when norm macdonald talked with gilbert gottfried about bill hicks and janine garofolo. unfortunately, what was once an annoying curiosity in the world of comedy has become dominant. as norm subtly pointed out, it usually lacks laughs and makes up for it in philosophical quotes I have to say that the Norm MacDonald Live Podcast guest starring Gilbert Gottfried was one of my all-time favorites. As Gilbert was testing everyone’s “standards and practices” for what they would want to hear a comedian say, it reminded me of a similar method that Bill Hicks used only less verbal obscenities. I agree that the analysis of Bill Hicks jokes while retaining some comical aspects was unfair and a bit much. I found that some of Bill Hicks’ material to be refreshing while some others were hit or miss. Bill Hicks was known for testing the boundaries of audiences, television hosts and stations with his unique standup comedy. I decided to look at a documentary of Bill Hicks some time ago and thought it was enlightening and I learned a few things from it. I’m taking a look at one of Bill Hicks’ old interviews. Although long, they are pretty good. I take away some things from a lot of over the top comedy in the sense that what is funny to only one person can be effective when used in the right deliveries and settings. Apologies in advance if you and anyone gets offended by some of the things I linked. TGIF! e: i forgot i linked the gilbert gottfried roast before so here's Artie Lange: Heroin Is Nothing Like Running - CONAN on TBS Yobgoblin fucked around with this message at 04:29 on Nov 19, 2017 |
