I just saw him earlier this year. He...well you've seen the pics. But I got to shake his hand, and his wife's hand. He autographed my copy of his biography. I told him how he was one of my creative inspirations growing up because he was so goddamn good at his job. I thanked him for the years of good commentary and being a good human being. He grabbed my hand and nodded with a wide smile on his face. That made my goddamn day right there let me tell you. RIP Brain. You are the best.

One of the my favorite moments is just a little thing. IT was a WCW WW3 Battle Royal, and the ring announcer is just rattling of the names of all 60 competitors as the file out to the ring. So of course, the commentators are quiet throughout this thing so not to talk over the announcer. Except at one little moment, when one jobber in overalls comes out, and Bobby blurts out "A janitor?"

On one of the early Raws Bobby calls Doink's cheating a "Greco-Roman hair pull" and it's a beautiful piece of heel commentary.

Bobby was probably one of the best Color commentators of all time and managers, but his peak managing wasn't in the WWF but it was when he was managing Nick Bockwinkel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cy12f3zf_8A

I think part of why I don't watch regularly anymore and haven't for years is because when I started Bobby Heenan was the heel color analyst and he spoiled me for all who have come since. I'd watch and rewatch an entire show with a lackluster card if he was on the broadcast team, because his reaction to the action was always worth it even if the action wasn't. Plus, in character he HATED Hogan which was always a balm for the kids who soured on Hogan's mega-babyface act early. Hogan was a hypocritical cheater who kept using illegal punches instead of wrestling holds and thank goodness The Brain was there to tell the truth! Before Paul Heyman, if you had a guy with potential and you needed a mouthpiece, you went to the goddamned Brain. Nobody was better at making the constant half-assed threats to Hogan seem credible. I don't watch WWE these days, but there had better be a loving tribute tomorrow night, or WWE will catch hell for it.

Pinstripe Hourglass posted:The absolute loving greatest and the last true vaudevillian poo poo, that's good. I admit, I never got to see The Brain in his prime. I caught him on WCW, but by god did he get under kid Shinjobi's skin. He was such an rear end in a top hat. Growing up, I realized he was probably the most glorious rear end in a top hat I've ever had the courtesy of listening to. He was so good at what he did. I honestly think I may have hated him more than I hated peak WCW Jericho, which is a ridiculous feat.

RIP Bobby. I didn't grow up listening to him but he is so far and away the best color commentator in wrestling history it's not even close. I do think Graves is good and will be great, and I'm POSITIVE that's because he studied Brain. I hope he gets in a Brain tribute tomorrow.
