I think at some level movies have to be exploitive since at the end of the day the purpose of a movie is to have people watch it. I think this can be problematic in movies like Cuties in that I can see what the director wants but that still requires little kids to be exploited in a way to make her point.

I actually used to do forensic interviews for child victims and was on the sidelines of some pretty big investigations for child porn and honestly never really saw the star trek thing. What usually got me is how normal the people were. Like the myth of the giant gross nerd into child porn isn't that common but the first few times I went to get computers with a team I was always surprised when the door would open and some business man or normal looking teacher is standing there with the color draining from their faces.

Probably the best way to address this argument is that we've seen enough to make it clear that "it's not about sex, it's about power" is not all-encompassing.

I think about something like the Steubenville case, or Jameis Winston's rape case, where the accused smells rotten but it seems like they have zero conception of consent, bodily autonomy, etc. Or cases that get branded "gray rape" (not a term anyone should actually use sincerely), like the one from the restorative justice segment from VICE on HBO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhFyGz8wQaY&t=999s

Saying that the end goal of the accused in those types of cases was sex more than a power trip...I think that's pretty fair? Especially if we're talking about guys were raised to believe that they were entitled to sex with the women of their choosing.

So I debated making a post about that based on my own experiences (did forensic interviews for child abuse victims as well as some adult interrogations) but I worry about either making a really triggering post or not being able to actual make the point I want to make. So please use your judgement about unspoilering the rest of this post, I sincerely don't want to trigger or even just upset anyone

So the whole rape us about power thing is what I feel a vast oversimplification of what rape or sexual assault is and also ignores a lot of the reasonings behind a rape or assault. The bottom line is for pedophiles is while yes there is a power dynamic at play in grooming a victim, but really the abuser is doing this to get off. They are getting off on the assault itself, it's really not power for them. Same with rape, the rapist might be turned on by things like fear or causing pain or a victim struggling but and this is hard for a lot of people to understand or process lot of times the rapist just wants sex and rape was the easiest way to do that. And when it comes to guys like Kevin Spacey or the thousand other shitheads that have come to light, yes there is a power dynamic with how the assault plays out but again, the assault itself turns the abuser on and that's what gets them off

I hope I made my point with this and can try to expand or clarify anything. I will say I don't do anything like that for work anymore which is good cause I was legit becoming an alcoholic (woke up one morning and realized it took 3 Ambien and half a bottle of Scotch to pass out)

I mean one of his early comedy albums had a whole bit about drugging women at a party with Spanish fly. It was always there but society as a whole is very very misogynistic so no one cared. And he was known for doing "clean comedy" so yeah...

Just because someone is an abuser doesn't mean they will abuse everyone they enter into a relationship with. In fact a lot of abusers are masters at figuring out who is vulnerable enough to stay silent and who could potentially push back and/or expose them. A prime example of this is Josh Whedon, hence why you get testimonies from Charisma Carpenter and Gal Gadot about him making their lives hell but nothing from Sarah Michelle Gellar or Scarlet Johansson.

This isn't to say that famous people can't be abused but McGowan and Von Teese might have been at points in their careers where it would have made it harder for him to start the abuse cycle with isolating or controlling them.

This is from a human sexuality class I took years ago but I was told Spanish fly was a substance from a beetle that caused blistering if rubbed on the skin so it was ingested with the belief that it would cause irritation in the genitals so blood would rush there and turn the person on.

The bit itself has Cosby talking about giving some to (this is purely from memory so I might have the name wrong) a woman called crazy Mary and then he makes exaggerated intoxication noises to describe how she acted.
