It's called pinning - lots of birds do it when they are very interested/excited/angry. Ringnecks are very enthusiastic pinners :3:

Somewhere in this thread I read about eye pinning. I wish my conure's eyes weren't brown and black because I can't tell if he's boggling his eyes out at anything.

And I'm jealous of any of these parrots that play with toys or let themselves be touched by things, my bird hates everything. I got him a tiny plastic maraca like the dang videos and he's like nope. fear orb. I got him a xylophone to peck and make fun noises and nope. I got him a suctioncupped perch for shower time and hell no. He hates everything. You can't buy this guy a toy.

How does he feel about paper bags, cardboard tubes etc.? My bird (grey; notorious toy haters), does not like most bird toys but she will happily destroy anything made from brown paper. A good intro could be a small paper bag with something delicious hidden inside - non-threatening and tasty!

Year ago, my cockatiel went missing, so we spent the next hour searching for her in and under everything we could think of without success. Then someone remembered that they had closed the curtains about the time she was last seen and went to look.

There she was; safe behind the curtains and fluffed up like a football :3:

She was very very cross about being woken up to be put to bed - so much hissing, so many little pinches (she was an extremely gentle bird).

I've noticed that even birds that are normally quite wary get pretty lax about it when they worn-out by parenting - our local blackbirds are normally all CHIK-CHIK-CHIK when anyone comes near them except in the nesting season where you often find the hen spread out like a pancake on the lawn to sunbathe, obviously getting 5 goddamn minutes to herself away from those goddamn kids and does not care who is looking at her.

The grey crows who lived for more than 20 years in the big tree opposite from us got so relaxed with my family they used to leave the newly fledged chicks to play beside us if we were sitting outside - I really miss them, they were an amazing family.

Also when they both sneak into the house and I start hearing this curious brrrrrrrrrrrk from the sun room. They stick to each other like glue. The 2 budgies have a sugar mama type relationship.

It's the time of year when the swallows come back from Africa, which is always lovely, but yesterday was sort of special; I was sitting outside in the sunshine when suddenly a huge burst of swallow twittering broke out just beside me, it was just so loud and joyful I went over to see what was happening.

Just as I got to where it was loudest, I saw a pair of swallows zooming out from the shed they've been nesting in for the last two years, still singing together. I think maybe they are just really happy to be back :3:

This morning when I was out walking the dog, I saw a parent rook with two big chicks following them around demanding very loudly to be fed. All of a sudden, the parent just... cracked or something; they just started screaming and jumping up and down with their wings half out, right in the baby's faces for about 5 seconds and then stopped just as suddenly and walked away. The chicks just stood there completely silently for a little while, then walked after the parent without making a single sound.

For reference: A Rook

It did not :saddowns:

Bird is a juvenile sparrowhawk, a species noted for its skill at making surprise attacks from camouflaged positions.

Babby's mother regularly hunts and kills doves in our garden - they almost never see her coming. She flew past my head once, just an inch or two away and all I saw was a brown blur. Last year's baby was just as funny when it was learning how to hunt - it thought that it could reasonably stand openly on top of a building and pounce at a flock of starlings that was watching it and making rude remarks from a bramble thicket nearby.

Is that a fantail from New Zealand??? They are just the best little birds to meet in the forest - they come right up to you to see what you're doing, then flash their tails at you just to show off. I remember looking up at a really steep, forested cliff-face at dusk and seeing lots and lots of mysterious little white flashes. Took me about 5 minutes and a lot of squinting to work out that they were fantails strutting their stuff for the ladies :3:

Budgies are amazing and wonderful birds; everything they do they do with huge gusto. It's like they live life in technicolour. :kimchi:

I remember reading about this a few years ago - a wildlife ranger was telling people not to leave them if they found a drunk keruru in the woods, instead the advice was to gather them up in a bucket or something similar and bring them to a vet. Apparently the drunkness lasts much longer it would in people because the birds aren't just drinking/eating alcohol, they have a crop full of fermenting fruit so they are basically little mobile breweries staggering around the woods at this time of year.

Only cure is to cut off fruit supplies until production shuts down.
