I recently reread the Dune series (only Frank's stuff, jfc I tried his failson's stuff and I couldn't even get through one book) and I have to ask...

What is this beefswelling?

It's been a while since I read it, but can someone remind me what the gently caress happened in the ending of Chapterhouse? They shot themselves out into space without any kind of navigation, and two facedancers/machines/what tried to throw up some sort of net to catch the ship and missed?

That's pretty much it.

Ahh, that actually makes sense. Now I just wonder if the Handlers are just the hunters (Face Dancers Gone Wild) in the context of handling Futars, or an entirely separate thing altogether.

I'm just going to make my vague understanding of the six books my headcanon, i have no particular desire to read Herbert Jr.'s books.
My guess is that the Handlers and the two fantastical beings at the end of Chapterhouse are both pieces of the bene teilax that went to the scattering. The Handlers being the masters that went all in on genetic engineering, hence the futars, and the those other two beings being the end point of face dancers that went rogue. Duncan existed beyond time or whatever after he regained every one of his past lives, so it seems like those two hyper face dancers or whatever got to that point and beyond way before Duncan did.

You know - I've noticed this trend with other sci fi authors like Card: Herbert's books get more esoteric as they advance - and by book 4 I am completely put off.

Am I just too stupid to appreciate the later books w/ fishspeakers and whatever the gently caress - or are they viewed by you all as inferior products to the original book? My view is 1 is the GOAT, 2 and 3 are good sort-of, and everything after is a crap shoot of weird.

I pretty much agree except I do kinda like all of them. I like the ones past 3 because they're a crapshoot of weird. And all of them definitely straight up inferior to 1.

Seriously, does anyone ever wear their loving stillsuit mask? Do they even have stillsuit masks in any of the images? (Yes, I know it's unreasonable to expect actors in a movie to have their mouth covered, but can they at least have them and just pretend to use them all the time?)

I agree, but I mean a hit in terms of how the studio determines what projects to push next. They definitely won't lose money, and they'll most likely make a large amount of money, but whether that's enough for studio execs to view it as something worth pursuing for multiple sequels is another matter entirely.

Galewolf posted:

Breaking away from the "Where do you gently caress a level 3 guild navigator?" chat, I wanted to share an interesting discussion about Dune in Turkish sci-fi groups.

I have never read Dune in English, the first translation was made around the late '90s by two exceptional translators (I think one of them is also a literature professor) which is beyond perfect as translations go because they made a great deal of research in Arabic and Turkish language to bring out the underlying themes Herbert had.

It's hard to describe but one example is krys knife -> hancer-i figan translation. Hancer is Arabic for dagger and figan is, a Farsi word that can be roughly translated as "a wail caused by pain". Both words are used in Turkish and that translation really elevated the symbolism behind it.

So, anyway, the translators were having a facebook discussion about that og translation and possibly Herbert was really big into how a text sounds when it's read out loud so suggested his students to read their writings loudly. The translators did that with the English translation and noticed that Frank used words including the letter "s" more frequently in the desert section of the book so when read out loud it would simulate the sounds of moving sands in the desert, a continuous "sssssssss" sound. So the translators chose the Turkish translation to have as much as appropriate words that also use s to keep the theme.

There is no direct quote from Herbet about this (I think he mentions how your mental sound is important during reading somewhere) and it is entirely based on the assumptions of the translators but I thought it sounded neat and wanted to share with my goonbros.

That's loving awesome
