Onwards and upwards for all, IT is very much work your way up if you're willing to work hard. I love IT. Even though i hate it. Sometimes.
Don't feel too bad bro, I spent my 20's putting myself through uni and spending years busting rear end to break into my chosen industry while working numerous lovely minimum wage temp jobs to make ends meet, I only bounced into IT by mere chance and decided to make something of myself in it.

Now I'm doing a lot better, very much an average salary but a path to something much better.

lol, are you sure you want to ask that

The way it works here is that every workstation has logins restricted to its owner only (IT of course have our own accounts to access everything) along with them being local admin of their machine, the local admin thing of course is total poo poo so you occasionally get some smart alec who borks their machine (repeat offenders get reimaged no questions) and I'm astounded we haven't been hit by crypto yet. The strangest thing is that all user data is stored locally only so no redirection and no backups at all, game project data is instead controlled by Tortoise SVN (wooo) but considering we're up to rolling out 8tb data drives I suppose we'd have monstrous storage issues.

When it comes to playing games I'd say staff pretty much just stick to doing their job, you're free to install Steam and install/play any of your own games at the cost of your own disk space and can play at lunch time, I don't really bother but today I did have a crack at running XCOM 2 in 8k on my monster workstation. Oddly enough Origin is blocked and I'm not sure what else is out there, social media of any kind and all sorts of Internet stuff is blocked as well, of course we have heaps of console developer kits but I'm pretty sure you can't play retail games on them.

I think local admin is going to be pulled at some point and we might be moving to Git instead of SVN, but overall its a bit bonkers.

Gosh darnit I've spent weeks trying to figure out why the hell certain people can't access 365 from Outlook clients and why they can't authenticate, even got to the point where we would just flatten or replace machines for the sake of working.

Turns out certain people have their IE Internet Options set to use an automatic configuration script which is either defunct or missing, gently caress knows how/why its there but switching it off made things work again.

I used a Pro 3 and 4 for a long time and didn't really like them. They really fell down when it came to the dock. About one in four times, things wouldn't come back right or wouldn't work. This was on both the old slidey-dock and the newer brick.
That said, we've probably got about 10 total devices, some Pro 4s and some old SurfaceBooks, and most of the people who have them love them.

I dunno, maybe the Pro 6 will be a non-turd.

If the Surface's weren't so goddamn unreliable I'd consider them to be actually quite nice, but no we get a nice array of; digitizer issues, clip on keyboard issues, power up issues, BIOS issues, bricking issues, old ones use the monolith dock new ones use the crappy cable brick.

So then we changed over to Dell XPS's which have CPU overheating/throttle issues

Can't remember if I told my InfoSec story from a few years ago. I'd just gotten a really nasty dressing-down from my boss, complete with yelling and threats, so I figured I was on thin ice. Came to work the next day, and my computer was gone from my desk. A coworker said, "Oh yeah, some IT guy showed up and just walked off with your laptop. Didn't say why."
I started packing up my stuff: usually the computer seizure comes right before the escort off the premises, right? And I can't even check my email, so I expect this is it.

Since I have little to lose, I call up one of my buddies in IT to say goodbye and ask him to find the ticket to see how how bad it is. "Huh--turns out InfoSec suspects there's malware on your machine and they wanted to examine it. You don't appear to be fired." Turned out the Chrome mouse gestures extension I had installed was periodically sending usage statistics back to its home server, and that set off some alarm on our web proxy.

Which is fine and all, but you'd think a quick phone call would be in order. "Hey, we're deeply concerned about a potential threat on your machine. Here's a loaner while we examine things, and let's just confirm you don't have any critical deadlines today. We'll have your machine back by 3!" Nope, let's just send a tech to confiscate your machine.

Yikes, the worst we ever got was a panicky E-mail because one of the seniors ended up finding a canary of theirs trying to figure what the gently caress is this unknown thing on our network. The cherry on top though is the conversation that followed;

InfoSec: "So we've seen one of you has tried to access one of our secure hidden devices blah blah blah"
Senior1: "Oh yeah that's just X hacking"
InfoSec: "!?"
Senior1: "Wait wait sorry the guy's surname is Hacking, he discovered this unknown device yesterday and tried to figure out what it was"
Senior2:

I like how at some point in the last few weeks someone somewhere decided to turn on SCCM reporting, with gems like this:

Domain: company
Detection time(UTC time): 1/16/2019 4:38:57 PM Malware file path: blahblahblah

To view further information about malware activity in your organization, run Malware Details Report.

Great googamooga, a project came in; the business wants to host a company-wide two day game jam

* Everyone is included (unless you have a super good reason not to)
* It has to take place on-site on a segregated network while using company hardware
* All workstations have to be isolated from using production data (Network AND local)
* All workstations cannot use enterprise software/resources
* All users cannot use their domain accounts
* No local storage

I'm probably forgetting more requirements, and the only thing we've got going for us is we're not expected to do support on the day, but jesus :psyduck:

We kind of sweetened the deal with Win 10 deployment with just giving people whole new much more powerful PCs, although it kind of went hand-in-hand of having a requirement for all machines needing to be encrypted as well (older stuff either didn't have TPMs or the version was simply too old).

Once Christmas came around and the office was empty we did a sweep of the old machines and whisked them all away, I think at most we had only two or three people actually need them back for a short time.

Goddamn sometimes you really have to go around the houses with some people, I was on the phone for an hour with someone who:

- Was on sick leave for several weeks and just retrieved their workstation to take home, can't remember their password
- Workstation also lost domain trust
- Had to Quick Assist onto another laptop they had to login to their O365 account with creds I reset because they're incapable of following instructions, all for the purpose of displaying login information on a screen
- They haven't setup MFA, and don't own a loving smartphone so had to set it up on their partners phone
- Fortunately there's a lifeline in that the local recovery user we put on all machines still works
- Get em to login using the information on the laptop from earlier, Quick Assist onto the box and get it ship shape
- VPN still doesn't work because of security checks and needs updates, updater wont work so I slap the Windows update assistant on to do its work then gently caress off and call me back later

You can tell the AV nerds and streamers at my company because there's weirdos like me who have a good ring light, an external camera and tripod so it looks like I'm looking at you when I talk, and pro audio gear. My now former boss is very similar, and there's definitely a few people who you know are showing off.
When this all started kicking off I pretty much just rocked a Surface Book 2, and a pair of iPhone ear phones so I was cursing myself not packing more stuff from the office.
I got fed up constantly using a trackpad so I bought a Logi Pebble and an extended mousemat, then we started using Teams and the VOIP quality was mega garbage on my WiFi so I managed to dig out an old Nintendo Wii 10/100 ethernet dongle, then lastly I started getting a bunch of neck pain and dug out a monitor riser we still had kicking around.

We do have random catchups but our team doesn't really banter all that well, personally I don't say much as I don't want to bring the mood down saying I'm miserable (although they didn't see it one of the meetings my kid decided he was done blowing bubbles in the garden then came and dumped the pot of liquid all over my shorts).
