I got a cold email from some external recruiter a couple weeks ago for a job in South Dakota so I deleted it thinking it was just normal mail merge spam. nope - the guy has followed up four times. gotta figure a normal person would figure out I wasn't going to respond after the second one where he said they were in the final round of interviews and I'd better hurry up to be considered didn't get me running in visibly out of breath holding a half-crumpled resume, but no, not this dude. maybe it's actually a sympathy play because I am wondering just how desperate you have to be to be so obviously thirsty

it's not a mis-match, though. like 90% of the work in any ML group is just slurping data in and out of other sources, because it's never in any convenient format

ETL is the bulk of the work, for real

even if you land one of those high-dollar jobs that leverages your modeling and statistics expertise, you will still spend an inordinate amount of your time worrying about ETL tasks -- either writing the code yourself or trying to persuade a moron "data science engineer" to do it

oh yeah makes sense when you put it that way. I guess there'd at least be some interesting work around the ETL stuff though

I like how there's so much prep into "ok so if this engine goes, do that" so if poo poo did go down the pilot literally has a script to follow. I also like how at least one airplane (Something Mustang?) is apparently so light and small that if the pilot crawled into the lavatory in the back of the airplane, it would pitch up, and potentially crash, making for a literal dump of death.

I mean this is purely theoretical and I hope it never happens, but yes, you could literally shitpost a plane out of the sky. In a sense.

that happened to a iirc 747 carrying tanks the other year and someone caught it on dashcam. whole fuckin plane visibly shifts suddenly mid-takeoff and then falls right out of the sky like in a disaster movie

Even then, I disagree that these bootcamps are all you need to be an effective software engineer long term, there's just so much poo poo that is taught in a cs program that you will never get from a 10 week boot camp. Networking, distributed systems, advanced databases, security, cloud engineering to name a few big ones that I really wish people at this company had even a cursory understanding of.

none of those are core classes, though? other than networking fundamentals and some security stuff I'm learning all of that poo poo on the job

vetterly trip report: got an interview request a few hours after my profile went public. local company with an actual product you can buy on Amazon too which surprises me a bit because I was expecting fart app providers from the coastal tech hubs

I worked for a consulting company for a couple of years and now I get tons of recruiter spam from consulting recruiters even though I have the thing switched off and don't want to do placement consulting either

that's a thing people do. it's ok. i understand that sometimes family connections or your church or whatever matter more than economic concerns.
