I spent so much time growing up listening to John Peel and those The Fall sessions. Mark E Smith did have a reputation for being a massive rear end in a top hat, going as far as firing his wife from the band and his life. But if you weren't in a bad with him or Morrisey then he seems to have been a really great guy all round.

Lots of people get called mavericks or whatever, very few of them will ever close to Smith in this regard though.
