In a nutshell, he’s smart enough to realize that West Virginia is sitting on multiple gold mines, and he’s pissed off just like most West Virginians that all the money gained from extracting what’s in the ground goes to out-of-state billionaires, and WV could be the Colorado of the East Coast if the state government would stop dragging its feet on legalizing marijuana. That’s not to say that the state shouldn’t transition to clean energy, but the people shouldn’t be getting screwed so hard while the mining corporations make off with all the earnings.

In April 2008, Blair Mountain was chosen for the list of protected places on the National Register of Historic Places. This decision was contested by the state of West Virginia, and the listing was placed under review. As of mid-2010, subsidiaries of two of the United States' largest coal producers, Arch Coal and Massey Energy, hold permits to blast and strip-mine huge chunks of the upper slopes and ridge of Blair Mountain, removing much of the mountaintop.

Cold water shock is no joke, if you don't gasp and take in a lungful of water, or the adrenaline surge from the cold temperatures cause a heart attack, you have at most a couple minutes before you lose control of your limbs, you won't live long enough to get hypothermia, you'll drown first.

Usually what happens in cold water drownings is that first gasp you take when you hit a ~50 degree body of water suddenly causes you exhale and inhale and you aspirate water and then drown within moments. If you're not in a survival suit or wearing a decent lifejacket, you're dead very quickly. Even with a lifejacket you don't have long before you freeze to death.

USCG blog post posted:

Here’s an example of how it works. On the official Coast Guard blog, Paul Newman, a USCG boating safety specialist, points to the case of a man who had taken a stand-up paddleboard (also called a SUP) onto Lake Tahoe. The man had brought a lifejacket with him, but instead of wearing it, he tied it the leash of the board (which should have been around his ankle). About 50 yards from shore, he fell off and drowned instantly.

“The sudden fall into cold water made him gasp underwater. Aspirating water he began choking, probably panicked and, sinking into even colder deep water, made ineffective, frantic movements with his arms which had been momentarily stunned by the cold water. He wasn’t wearing a lifejacket and he died without ever surfacing.”

According to findings from the 2008 research project Cold Water Bootcamp, cold water kills quickly and it doesn’t even have to be that cold (just under 70 degrees F). That day on Lake Tahoe, it was summer and the air temperature 75 degrees with surface water temperatures around 60 degrees.

If cold shock response doesn’t kill you in the first minute, within 10 minutes your limbs start to become incapacitated, making it difficult or impossible for even strong swimmers to get back to a boat. In about an hour, hypothermia sets in. As Newman repeats a half a dozen times, “wearing a lifejacket buys you time.”

Oh, help immensely. It’s going to take a combo of politicians like Ojeda that can fire up the populace enough to vote and waiting for the boomers to die to get it done, though.

At the same time, it’s a race against the clock. The state’s facing serious brain drain, and with less population comes less tax revenue, which makes it harder to make the improvements necessary to attract new people and businesses.

Anecdotal example: I get the cheapest broadband package Spectrum offers here in Charlotte (50mbps), and it’s ten times faster than what I had in WV for about the same cost.
