I have played a lot the last few weeks but haven't really looked stuff up; this chatter reminds me of a question I've had. It feels like when I blow up minerals with C4 or drill out the dirt around the perimeter of the vein, I get a lot less than if I just pickaxe'd everything out slowly. Am I nuts or is that a thing?

When the game tallies XP at the end for minerals mined, is that just for gold, or do nitra, bismor, etc etc. count? For that matter, does morkite count towards that? Also, is it just minerals mined, or do they need to be deposited?

That's mostly how I have been treating it - when I'm waiting for the pod to come in, or there is other downtime, I head out and mine for a couple minutes before regrouping, and I was wondering if that was worth it. Sounds like it is, though it's not a ton of XP.

I use the overclock that lets it put down an aura of damage over time on top of whichever chokepoint I am setting on fire, but it seems very underwhelming, yeah. I use it because the Subata feels awful too, so it's much of a muchness.

We were playing last night and had a wave that was just a dreadnought! Is this a new thing that was just patched in, or very rare? We'd never had it happen to us before.

Also this mission name/type combo gave me childish amusement:

Yeah that's for sure what makes EDDs hard is the objectives and modifiers, not the hazard level. I can do haz5 fairly regularly and feel fine, but liquid morkite in the fungus bogs with low o2 on haz5 is a pain.

Small bit of historical trivia that might help: an arbalest is a kind of medieval crossbow, and the arbalest is the twin that hangs out in the back and fires at you, while the lacerator gets up in your beard like you might expect. Dodgy colours aside, the names describe the way they attack fairly well, which helps me distinguish them.

To me the biggest issue with the new game mode is that it seems to have a hard block on certain classes and loadouts in a game where nothing else is like this. Even on haz 5 and elite deep dives me and my crew have gotten by with just playing what we find fun, what works for us, picking skills based on trial and error instead of following meta guides online, and that works and is fine. When we do this, we all have multiple loadouts with which we feel comfortable on high difficulty missions, and no matter what we do we feel that we have options, and it's never a case of 'well the game just hosed us.' The one exception is liquid morkite, you pretty much need a driller, it's mandatory to do it in a remotely timely fashion.

The new mission type is exactly the opposite of that though. Some weapons are simply bad on this game mode. Some classes run into hard blockers. Oh, you're playing driller and you ran into a large cavern full of sniper turrets? Good luck with that poo poo. Many of the classes feel limited, and some weapons within those classes are simply wrong choices. With the exception of the liquid morkite mentioned above, there isn't a single other mission in the game where I feel obligated to preplan not just what class I play but which weapons and perks I choose, just for that mission. It feels more like an MMO raid than a normal DRG mission.

Oh, and the fact that the bugs and robots are on the same team really annoys me. Technically speaking there's nothing wrong with it from a gameplay perspective, but I hate it when two groups that should be enemies both decide to work together to fight you the players, because you're the players.

DX12 I say.

DX12 renderers (generally) provide a boost in base framerate and smoother gameplay since it takes more advantage of high core count CPUS- using extra threads to feed your GPU. A lot of AAA games have really loving buggy DX12 renderers (looking at you, Division 2) but I generally always at least try DX12 when it's available. It also should improve the lighting some.

Okay, but the real question: when I launch, I get the options of Play Deep Rock Galactic (DX11),Play Deep Rock Galactic (DX12), and Play Deep Rock Galactic. I always choose the last one, but what does that do?

Procedurally Generated mission maps, simplistic and stylized texture work, minimal voice acting… honestly it’s not that surprising.

They probably use file compression too, unlike AAAs.

I almost guarantee you that the secret sauce is a mixture of the texture/material work and sound. Most games need to have large file size textures to use in a material, but that means if you want a 4k texture you also need a 4k normal map, and maybe a 4k roughness/spec map or 4k AO map or... well, you get the idea. A single material can easily balloon in size to dozens of mb very quickly. Most modern engines will let you get away with using a lower res normal map, and then if you have the time budget for it you can fake the other maps using shader parameters, or bake them into the texture's information channels, stuff like that. But I would not be surprised if many of DRG's materials were very heavy on the procedural side, where they have a single base texture or no texture at all, where the diffuse texture is created using math and shaders.

As for sound, having just two voiced characters will do a lot for the size budget of your audio.

Had a great deep dive last night. Everyone is blue level 100+, one guy is drunk as a skunk both in game and out (one of the beers disappeared so he ordered four more and drank them all) and the whole mission is buttery smooth, rock & stones echoing throughout. Then at the end of the last escort mission we simultaneously all forget that it's low o2 and the smoothest deep dive I have ever played turns into a failure cascade that only managed to get two of us out - and that only because of iron will.

If you don't mind playing with other people, definitely group up, either doing public games or with goons. The game is set up in such a way that everyone gets everything, there isn't any backbiting and competition in the group; and most pubs are pretty friendly.

Good to know I'm not totally screwing myself by being biased.

Also, don't feel bad about duplicating classes on a team, you really don't have to fill in if you don't want to. Almost every mission type and difficulty works just fine with lopsided teams; the game is not balanced around having one of each class. There are very few challenges that are insurmountable unless you have a specific class with you, even if a certain class might do something more easily.

Seconding that this is how it's supposed to work. Most of my builds have iron will because when it comes to clutch or kick, I almost always have a plan to clutch. Scout finds red sugar, driller vampires something, gunner pops a shield and either eats a supply pod or revives under his dome.

I admit that I hate turret classes in games so I play engineer with the turrets built completely so that I have as little babysitting of the machines as possible. One turret, fast deployment, 360 FOV, etc. I drop my turret when it seems necessary using as little brainpower as possible and recall it when it's not needed.

I'm sure at the very highest levels this is a terrible build, but I routinely run haz5 with haz4 as my chillout zone and I always equal the other engineers in killcount, and we never struggle in situations where the turret system is doing heavy lifting.
