I started in Aero after reading Ben Rich's book on the Skunk Works and deciding that's exactly what I wanted to do in my life. Then I learned that small integrated design shops like the Skunk Works of the 50's-70's don't really exist anymore. My job as an Aero would be at the component or subsystem level. I wanted to do the whole thing, so I transferred to Engineering Management, which is a Industrial/Systems variant degree my school offers. Now I'm graduating in 2 weeks and looking for Project Management work not in IT or traveling construction. Need to get my CAPM and 6 Sigma Green Belt certs, but I'm ready to go. There's slow movement for improving the systems engineering education in this country. Got to meet William Shepherd (SEAL and Astronaut) at the beginning of the semester because he was trying to recruit my school and degree program to the Systems Engineering Research Center. I never served, so I don't have that first hand experience with the clusterfuck of DOD SE approach, but fixing those problems is absolutely something I want to do. For better content. As much as I would dislike it, HQ2 is probably gonna be in the DC area. They've got DC/MD/NoVA on the top 20 list so they'll keep fighting over who gets the privledge of offering the lowest taxes for JOB CREATORS.

I could still see Toronto or Vancouver taking it. You won't get the tax benefits but you will have to pay out less in bennies and I think standard education is better up here than the states. Telsa might be bankrupt within the year: https://twitter.com/ConnorSouthard/status/990951892128817154?s=19

I'm kinda hoping it's Toronto because while I've heard nothing but horror stories about working on amazon's systems and infrastructure, they pay well and that'll drive IT salaries in the city up.

If they come here I probably won't be able to get a house in Fairfax at all, let alone several years from now. It'll be extra funny because it's going to zap all the IT talent that's here. Why work with the government when you can get paid even more AND smoke weed.

No it's not, read the article. They're expanding a previously existing tech hub. Vasudus posted:Yep. If they come here I probably won't be able to get a house in Fairfax at all, let alone several years from now. We've pretty much discounted most of NOVA due to how much commute times go up once we start looking at places that we could reasonably afford. My fiance and I aren't planning on having any kids, so we don't have to worry about buying where the schools are good, so that might make things a bit more bearable on our end. Otherwise, my rear end is going remote full time and we're gonna find a place to buy where the commute isn't as terrible for her. On the upside, she got a new gig this past month and is pretty much making double my salary, so we'll likely be fine in the long run. I just bought a really nice 3 bedroom bungalow with a finished basement for $360k which isn't bad. If I went 40km to Kitchener/Waterloo area it would have been over half a million easily. You can commute to Toronto easy enough but I wouldn't do it every day. If you were just driving there 2-3 times a week it wouldn't be bad if you left early.

I was curious when I was in Vancouver and looked into rent prices and they were comparable to large expensive cities in the US.

Excuse me if you ask any fine developer or politician from around here that's actually just racism and it's all driven by native born speculators trying to chase this supposed foreign investor cash Things people actually say out loud when every new development here is crawling with Chinese language real estate ads and the stories of people buying properties over asking price in cash aren't just stories

I am from a suburb outside of Vancouver, and friends and family have been selling homes to real estate agents acting as middle men for Chinese buyers who have never seen the home. Tons of homes sitting empty in my old neighborhood, and since they never rent them out it fucks the market hard, and the lack of upkeep means serious rat problems for the whole neighborhood.
