I was about to say that I've never run into this problem but then I saw your post and it makes sense now. Most movies I own are from these or similar publishers.

I found that the quickest way to get around this sorta poo poo is to disconnect the device from the internet. Any BDLive enabled disc that I put in my PS4, I make sure I disconnect entirely before booting and it's just the (skippable) trailers and disclaimers, usually.

Some get around that mrgod, though. A current trend among Australian films is a 2 minute, volume boosted, unskippable vignette that's a bunch of local actors and industry saying "thank you for supporting local films!" with obnoxious backing music. It's killing me.

Oh man my first DVD that I watched/bought was the Futurama Season 1 boxset, which I wore out rewatching again and again and again. They lasted for a good decade or so before they gave up, though.

I just bought the Umbrella Entertainment version of Suspiria (the AUD has tanked and makes importing the Synapse/any overseas version prohibitively expensive), but I can't find out any information which transfer they're using out the million and a half 4K restorations that have come out over the last year. DVDBeaver says that the TLE transfer is used for overseas/Region B releases but it doesn't seem that dark?

All the classic CBS TV blu ray releases are like that, I think. Star Trek is the same way. It's a shame because they're great sets for very cheap prices. And it's not like they cheaped out on the packaging, it's just poor design.

The best part is both my Star Trek and Twilight Zone had a few discs rattling around loose in there when I opened them. Given that there's no possible way for those discs to fall out of the holders once they're in, I can only assume they failed to insert some properly at manufacturing.

There were a couple of seasons of The Simpsons that had the discs slide in and out of a concertina cardboard sleeve. It was fantastic at scuffing DVDs right out of a brand new box.

It’s region-free, but I’m curious if the menus and stuff are in English and if the transfer is any good.

Looking at the Italian Amazon page here it says it has English audio but no subtitles. It might be that only the 4K UHD disc is region free (because there isn't any region encoding on those?) so the blu-ray edition might be locked; similarly, only the European cut has a 4K remaster, so on the UHD edition only 1 out of 6 discs is a UHD and therefore completely guaranteed to be region free (and the back of the box image on Amazon says UHD is Region ABC, Blu is Region B).

Reading the blu-ray.com forums makes it seem like a bit of a clusterfuck, though, with some relatively recent purchases still requiring to send away for replacement discs due to a framing issue, but it seems to be legit. I also assume that some prestige label is just going to bite the bullet and pay the licensing fee at some point, so unless you really need just that one single cut in UHD it'd probably be easier to wait it out.

Kino is releasing Pioneers: Early Women Filmmakers on Nov. 20.

It'll be a six-disc set with twenty-eight hours of films ranging from 1911-1929 - over 50 titles. There will be a disc each devoted to the work of Alice Guy-Blache and Lois Weber. Also will feature films by Mabel Normand, Grace Cunard, Dorothy Davenport, and Alla Nazimova. Also will include a 80 page booklet.

This was originally a Kickstarter project like their excellent Pioneers of Early African-American Cinema set. They're apparently only having one film that overlaps with Flicker Alley's 3-disc set from last year (Lois Weber's Suspense).

Releases the same day as the Criterion Bergman set, and three days after my friend flies back from the US :( that's gonna be an expensive month.
