it's also an award decided solely at the discretion of mark messier

they sohuld have let ONLY vancouver send their mascot so you'd have a bunch of guys in suits and ties trying to remain dignified while sitting next to a guy in an animal costume and having the draft lottery destroy their hopes and dreams

if the penguins traded letang without getting a top pairing d back or making a separate move to replace him they'd be slamming their window shut. they can't really afford to take a step back next season because it's the last season of the current contracts for hagelin, brassard, and most importantly guentzel.

oh sure like just any defenseman could do that playing half an hour a game on the same team as three top ten scoring forwards

Trade Letang for Gardiner to swap whipping boys.

I mean they did it (indirectly) with Hainsey and Hunwick so why not? :v: Incidentally I wouldn't be surprised to see a Hunwick buyout, two years left on his contract and he's probably been a healthy scratch for more games than he's played, and the games he's played were almost all pretty bad.

given what we know of peter chiarelli and jim benning, milan lucic for brandon sutter makes way too much sense to have not been on the table

also i feel i should point out, re-signing evander kane also costs the sharks a first round draft pick now that the condition for sending it to buffalo has been fulfilled

Jessel trade rumors are just Mark Madden being a dumbass. He trotted out an article saying that Phil wants out and the Penguins want him gone because of his cap hit (fair point) and his lazy, selfish play in the season and practice. Meanwhile he writes the very next sentence saying Kessel had a career year in points. His other gripe seems to be that Kessel has an iron man streak and he put that in front of his health play hurt, but outside of the playoffs that doesn't add up either.

Madden was a huge defender of Kessel, and now it seems like he heard something from someone, reported it, and is writing a narrative for why it must be true despite him saying the opposite for the past two years.

Phil Kessel didnt talk to any media guys on locker cleanout day or whatever so now all the beat writers are mad at him, its pretty funny (and ridiculous) how transparent it is

kessel had less than half of his points come at 5v5, he just about broke even in terms of corsi while underperforming the rest of the team, and was slightly underwater in terms of goals for percentage. he also had the second highest shooting percentage of his career.

i feel like this is the kind of case that causes fancystats to lose a lot of people because im sitting here looking at stats for kessel to see whats wrong on corsica and im just saying to myself "yeah, okay, but come on he had 92 points". like yeah his shot attempts% and goals-for% aren't great, but when a player is that good at scoring i feel like you just accept that his defense sucks and try and find somebody who can take care of his share of defending for him. granted, evaluating a player beyond the conventional box cars to get a more nuanced understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of a player's game is exactly what advanced stats are for, but i think a lot of average hockey fans would just go "phil kessel? bad? NUH UH" and say the stats are junk and misleading

lets be honest though you could interview hockey guys for years "on the record" and probably not get a soundbite a tenth as interesting as alfie trashing melnyk

Matt Murray had like an 894 save percentage in his draft year, then 920+ from then on out until this year.

Goalies are voodoo.

They also let go of Mike Bales last summer and replaced him with Mike Buckley. :tinfoil:

I don't know anything about either of those guys to be honest but I wonder if the switch in goal coaches had anything to do with the Penguins' lovely goaltending pretty much all around over the last season and playoffs.
