The dub of Yu Yu Hakusho is superior to the sub because the Japanese script is bland as gently caress and the dub punches it up so much and adds so much color and screen presence to the main cast it's arguably a rewrite instead of a translation - and one for the better.

Like most industries the conditions are terrible, but some of the specific examples caught me off guard. The average salary for first time hires is so low it doesn't match the most basic living expenses, and this so well known by the companies that some of them ask in interviews "do you have savings?" and "can your parents make up the difference?".
Yeah Japan as a whole has that Puritan/Protestant Work Ethic on steroids; I always hear that the reason why a lot of anime is set in high school (other than demos) is that is the time period where they have choices in their lives.

To summarize:

A trans woman made a few tweets criticizing Laura Grace Jane for defending Buck Angel, noted monster.

Alice jumped into the thread to start digging up tweets about her being a landlord, then implied that she should kill herself after the woman asked what Alice thinks she should do. (Said "landlord" has one house and lives there herself, sublets rooms in said house at half the going rate and puts excess money into a maintenance fund instead of taking it for profit, hasn't charged rent at all since the COVID-19 crisis started, and has pushed to have the laws in her country (Iceland) that prevent people from sharing ownership of a single home so that she can turn her house into a co-op owned by all the residents, so as far as landlordliness goes it's pretty minor. Also even if you ignore all that the actual landlording is pretty similar to a situation DNE described in one of his own videos, and I don't think the message there was that Mrs. O'Leary should kill herself. I could be mistaken though.)

Some of the tweets Alice posted as proof of evil landlordliness involved the woman having had to throw out a tenant's friend for trying to rape her, and then banning that tenant from bringing guests into the house because he kept trying to bring his rapist friend back or something. No one was evicted as far as I know, unless you count the rapist friend since he was staying with his pal there free sometimes. Even if you stretch things to include him, I think attempted rape is a pretty fair reason for getting kicked out, so gently caress that guy.

Someone started using the official WTYP account to say Alice was in the right about all this and make jokes about being "cancelled" by the "Landlord Defense Brigade", basically directing their followers to dogpile on the situation. From their past videos I thought it was Liam who runs the account, but whoever was posting claimed that it was DNE. Whoever it was, they spent at least seven hours tweeting about this.

Alice has since spent two days doubling down on this, getting into stuff like spreading the woman's deadname, and generally being human garbage.

It's all been very bewildering, disgusting, and disappointing. I'm sure they're going to talk about it at the start of the next episode too; I wonder how they're going to try to spin it so that Alice doesn't look like a complete shithead. (Probably by just saying "landlord" a million times and ignoring everything that actually happened.)

To clarify on the deadname part, I wouldn't quite put that at the level of doxxing since while the person in question doesn't use it anymore, obviously, she also hasn't tried to completely scrub it from the Internet (it's still on older stuff she's written that you can find in the same places newer things she's written are, I believe); Alice is still being intentionally lovely, though.

Yikes.

I was just trying to say he literally misunderstands Epicureanism, as well as a bunch of other ancient Greek philosophers.

For those interested, Epicureanism can be defined best as "Maximizing small pleasures". Olly defines it as "Removing all desire", which he proceeds to equate to depression.

This is, of course, not even remotely true. That's the shallowist reading possible.

Anhedonia, an inability to find pleasure in things, is absolutely a symptom of depression. Same with a lack of motivation, a lack of desire, etc.

Epicureanism, on the otherhand, is at its heart a philosophy of self-control. One is supposed to avoid big, blow out pleasures because they come with big negative price tags: you go out and party and get trashed, and in the morning you have a massive hangout, a hole in your wall, and a lot of people angry with you for what you said that night. You sleep with a different person every night, and you start to hate yourself for having shallow, meaningless relationships with people and possibly you contract an STD. You attend a different opera everyday, and you stop enjoying them, and your wallet suffers.

And, of course, when you are cut off from your ability to do the big pleasures, you suffer mentally, because you really want them.

Instead, learning to appreciate the "small" pleasures: an intimate gathering with friends, making love to a regular partner, a local concert every one and a while... These things generally do not have the massive price tag attached to them, and one can do them over and over without consequence.

And, importantly, one slowly gives up the desire to do the big blow out things.

That isn't depression; that's self-control. It's a rational cost/benefit analyst when it comes to consequences of actions, and the amount of self invested in things.

It's more akin to Buddhism or Taoism, where desire leads to suffering. To equate that to depression, and then to spend the next ten minutes bitching because you can't go out, can't date, can't go to the opera, can't make art (for some reason)... Well, it's pretty self-defeating, and shows a great lack of self-control. And you shouldn't do that when you've just complained at length about a philosophy of self-control. If he actually understood Epicureanism, and worked on his self-control, on giving up some of those "big" desires, and learned to appreciate the small ones (the chocolate egg he talks about a length in the video, for example), he'd be in a much better place.

I hate to judge a person personally for what they make, and would normally try to focus purely on the content, but in this case, because he's talking about his life so directly, it's hard not to.

And don't even get me started on his version of The Symposium... Funny? Sure. But accurate? No way in hell.
