What actual tools and benefits does CC give to both the people asking the question, and those answering them?

It functions as an AMA that never ends, letting people curate questions and respond intelligently (in theory) and letting users engage with the people they’re fans of without having to shout into the void of Twitch chat or be a Patron.

It’s really unfortunate that these people who ran it suck.

Also I’m really fuckin’ tired of 30+ year old video game nerds acting like everything made before the PS1 was the best thing ever and making best games of all time lists that are mostly old Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon titles. Bob is pretty much squarely in that camp and it’s super obnoxious.

I mean as tiring as it gets, Mario and Zelda did a lot of interesting things and influenced their genres a crazy amount and continue to do so, it'd be kind of dishonest to not have them in some top spots, even if it means most lists keep on ending up with SMB3, OoT/Majora's Mask and Half-Life 2 at the top.

Imo the only way for a list like that to be meaningful is to make an explicit division between games from before and after either 2000 or the fifth generation of consoles, which is when 3D became prevalent and “modern” games began to identifiably emerge, and to limit itself to one entry per franchise (to clarify, I would characterize Mario Kart and the platformer Mario games as separate franchises because they have different core gameplay, as an example).

You also have to restrain yourself on the difference between games being good and games being historically influential and make it really clear which ones you’re emphasizing and consistent about which one matters more. There are plenty of games like Half-Life that have come out since that are better games but Half-Life is more influential and that’s a distinctive thing.

Edit: to make this on topic I’m mostly annoyed because IGN just did one of these and it’s terrible and they’re common among games YouTubers. It’s really annoying.

i mean, it could just be that those games are in fact among the best ever? like, the whole reason they keep making lists is because they still play loving phenomenally, especially when contrasted with the n64/ps1 era (hell, i'd say they've even aged a lot better than a large portion of the gamecube/xbox/ps2 libraries). that doesn't mean that there aren't much newer games that are among the best ever, and if some idiot is holding them up as examples of why 'games were so much better in my day :bahgawd:' then they can go gently caress themselves, but crying that they should not keep making lists of best games ever made strictly because some people say that is kinda dumb. at most there should be a separate category for games like ocarina of time which, while being one of the absolute most important and influential games ever made, has not aged gracefully at all, especially when compared with a link to the past or the wind waker.

I know I'm late to this, but I did actually address this further. Basically, yeah, I think that you need to categorize older games that were influential and good at the time but have aged really badly differently, and that in general games from before and after the fifth console generation are distinctively different enough to be worth viewing as separate bodies of work (especially since we're far enough out from 2000 that there's almost as much history after that than before for video games). I also generally think that a lot of these types of exercises are overly colored by nostalgia and overemphasize older games with good gameplay and little meaningful narrative over newer games that have good gameplay and narrative.

I also think that they have a terrible habit of including redundant entries. For example, in reference to the Halo discussion earlier, I don't think there's any reason to list Halo 1 and 2 individually, when you could just list "the Halo trilogy" and have something that was broadly representative of their impact, quality, and issues.

I really like Rey, and I really, really like Finn. They keep hyping up "the scene where Finn gets to kick someone's rear end" and then takin' it away from him.

But yeah I think that the Last Jedi is really tedious and has bad pacing, the chase scene as a conceit was really bad, and they almost did something cool with the big fight scene in the throne room and then pissed it away at the last second by choosing the only one of three options that was boring and predictable. There's a lot of things I like about the movie conceptually, certain characters, and visually, but I just am not on board with their approach to narrative, plotting, and world building.

Of course, the internet has decided that the worst thing about these movies is that POC are in them and there's a lady with purple hair who correctly owns a white man for being stupid, as opposed to any actual problems with the film.

All Holdo needed to do was tell the person who both this and the previous movie have confirmed as brash yes, but not even in the slightest disloyal or traitorous, the plans basics and none of the movie happens. But the new CO can't help but play high school favorites instead of being a Commander and whoops, things happen.

This isn't actually how military organizations work. He doesn't need to know poo poo. There's a reason that the movie, while it stupidly waffles on whether or not he or the admiral lady is right, comes down on her side by having Leia, the embodiment of moral rightness in the film, taze the poo poo out of Po for being an rear end in a top hat.

But this all ignores that the entire conceit of the chase scene is a stupid mechanism that actively makes no sense in terms of time flow or internal consistency and easily could've been done with a different excuse plot.

It’s a resistance movement, though, not an army. You can’t expect a group of mostly untrained volunteers to all have that level of discipline. They’re fighting against the First Order because they don’t want to live in a totalitarian society where authority must never be questioned.

I think it was a bad decision on Holdo’s part to withhold that information, but treating Poe in such a condescending way made it worse. Not only in-universe, but from the audience’s perspective as well, since he was a well-liked character from the previous movie and she was a total newcomer.

Yes, but the movie is deliberately making a point. This is one of the few things I genuinely thought was brilliant about the film. They brought in an unconventionally attractive female authority figure, they granted sympathetic POV to the rear end in a top hat fighter jock, they made it seem like he was going to show her up, but in the end, she was completely correct and the movie comes down like a ton of bricks on him. In fact, he gets off fairly light all things considered.

Also, generally speaking, the resistance should be based on the former army of the whatever, New Republic or whatever they're calling it in the new trilogy, so they should be more professional than the original Rebellion. They aren't, because the new movies are obsessed with visually referencing the original trilogy and cribbing notes from it wherever possible.

The problem with the way they set up the conflict between Po (Poe? whatever) and Holdo is that the scenario surrounding it is stupid, so the audience gets confused because the movie is unintentionally sending mixed messages.

Edit: to clarify, the movie makes it really seem like they might actually be hosed and they're not telling people the plan because there is no plan (and no you should not be honest about that because that's how you destroy the morale of an army), but then at the last minute pulls out a "solution" from a hat and thus the preceding drama surrounding the lack of a plan is nonsensical.

I mean the core problem with the chase plot is "why didn't they just FTL a ship immediately into the bad guy ship if that was always the back up plan?"

Or alternatively "why did they forgot that was a thing they could do until the most dramatic last possible moment?"

The answer is because the movie wanted to have its cake of "the drama of 'is there a plan or not? I don't think there can be we might be hosed'" and then eat it by presenting a previously unmentioned solution nobody has clearly remembered existed until Holdo does it.

The narrative is built on a house of cards and it stinks of bullshit because it is bullshit. Which is a shame because the FTL scene is really pretty.

Are you implying the Resistance was already a thing before the New Republic fell? That doesn't make sense. Did the New Republic not have a standing army? Did the Rebellion just never disband after forming a regular government?

Of course not, these are silly questions. The answer is that they wanted to reuse the Rebellion aesthetic and visual style in a different context because nostalgia.

Any kind of resistance as organized as presented in these movies is going to have a military hierarchy anyway, that's why the characters explicitly have ranks and Po's actions are explicitly framed as a mutiny, i.e. a rebellion against established military order.

The plot's actually not that hard to tweak into something fixable; As it stands, with Poe knowing what Hondo's plan is in advance, they just have to sit tight and they'll get out alive. Buuut there's no reason they can't still go with Poe's plan to try and get the Cruiser jumping to safety. Minimal risk, few people and resources potentially lost, and they might actually save the one capital-scale ship they have left. It's better than sitting on Salt-Hoth with barely any resources left, so give it a shot .

Okay, so that's one Imperial capital ship destroyed.

What about the day after? A month from then? Because a lack of a capital ship hurts for a lot longer than killing one among thousands will benefit.

I mean there's still other things wrong with it, like how the timeline is very slippery. Finn spends like, what, a single night on the casino planet? Plus the next morning? Rey is on the planet with Luke for quite a bit longer than that, and yet the chase scene doesn't seem to last longer than a day or two. Are we suddenly trying to add time dilation to explain that?

I think my main beef with TLJ is that I really enjoyed the parts with Rey on the ocean world, the stuff with Finn on the casino planet was interesting but felt like extended filler, the throne room/post FTL scenes on the big ship were cool, and the ending was fine. But the chase scene and opening bomber sequence just totally fell flat for me and really drags the first two-thirds of the movie down.

I mean, they're still in that same scenario the way the current plot is, they just also have no smaller ships now. What difference does it make?
