BINGO!
What's Shenmue?

Shenmue is a FREE game created by Yu Suzuki, the man behind Virtua Fighter and other Sega classics.

Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment.

It is a notoriously unfinished action-adventure-RPG that was originally released for the Dreamcast in 1999 in Japan, whereas the rest of the world got the game a bit later in 2000. The sequel was released in 2001 in Japan and Europe. America got the game in 2002 for the original Xbox.

Why was it unfinished?
The game was a huge undertaking for Sega, costing allegedly 70 million dollars. It was the flagship title for the Dreamcast, which in the end died due to mishandling and just pure lack of luck. After Dreamcast died, the second installment was released for the Xbox. Unfortunately, Sega went through a huge restructuring and merger during these years and this led to them being wary of taking a risk with releasing a new Shenmue, leaving the series in limbo for years. This was a sore spot for many fans, as the second game ends in one of the worst cliffhangers ever, leaving more questions than actually answering anything.

What is the story about?

In 1986 Yokosuka, Japan, teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki returns to his family dojo to witness a confrontation between his father Iwao and a Chinese man, Lan Di. Ryo intervenes, but is easily incapacitated. Lan Di demands Iwao give him a mysterious stone artifact known as the dragon mirror. When he threatens to kill Ryo, Iwao tells him the mirror is buried under the cherry blossom tree outside. As Lan Di's men dig up the mirror, Lan Di mentions Zhao Sunming, whom Iwao allegedly killed in Mengcun, China. Lan Di delivers a finishing blow and Iwao dies in Ryo's arms.

Ryo vows to avenge his father and sets out to find Lan Di.

So why am I hearing about this game after all these years?
The story starts at E3 2015. Sony is holding a press conference and out of nowhere, Shenmue III Kickstarter is announced. The project hit its minimum funding goal in under 9 hours.

Here's the collective internet reaction: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXJTWEEi6BM

After a while, in 2017, Yu Suzuki announced that the game was pushed to late 2018. Small trickle of trailers and such dropped during this time, gaining interested and some publicity.

In April 2018, Sega held their Sega Fes where they announced a re-release of Shenmue 1 & 2 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. This was a highly welcomed announcement as many were willing to revisit the original titles before the continuation of the story.

Is it any good?

Shenmue is unique. The games are technically really great, but they are starting to show their age. I personally feel that the controls compared to 3D games today are very clunky. The first game pales in comparison to the second game, which is a much larger and technically superior. Also, the english dub for these games is .. questionable.

Where Shenmue shines is the world and the characters and the story. Along the journey, you meet different characters with different motivations and you learn more about the world you live in. The world feels like it lives and you can talk to anyone you meet unless they want to fight you. The journey Ryo sucks you in and you feel like it is your own personal journey.

How can I play it?

Shenmue 1 & 2 are available for the Dreamcast. Shenmue 2 is also available for the original Xbox and comes with a passable movie version of the first game.

Shenmue 1 & 2 will also be re-released for Xbone/PC/P4 later in 2018.

Shenmue 3 will be released in late 2018 for PC and PS4.

I can remember playing the original Shenmue on the Dreamcast years ago and being blown away by the immersive quality of it. I'd be curious to see how it stands up to the games of today.

I love this series unconditionally for blowing my young mind with the most immersive video game world I'd ever experienced. The story must continue. The hype is real.

Shenmue is one of the most ambitious and unique games ever made. You'll see people say it's the progenitor of Yakuza, they're 100% wrong. It's the progenitor of Gone Home, Papers Please + all other games that celebrate the mundane within a well-defined time and place. You get an allowance from your grandma. You have to be in bed by a certain hour. You eventually have to get a part-time job. There's nothing like Shenmue.

I remember skipping my job in that game to go play games at the arcade. It inspired me to quit future IRL jobs to slack off and play games.

Thanks Shenmue!!!

I wonder if that late 2018 release date is realistic or if this is going to get dragged out for years.

Hello Everyone,

Along with our publishers, Deep Silver, we have an announcement for the release date of Shenmue III. Our report follows with a comment from Mr. Suzuki.

Announcement by Deep Silver:

“ Deep Silver today announce that their upcoming release Shenmue III has been moved and will now release in 2019.

The extra time will be used to polish the quality of the game even further, to the high standards it deserves and release the product in the best possible timeframe. ”

Original Announcement: Deep Silver

Comment by Yu Suzuki:

To all of our backers, we are very sorry for the delay. After much discussion with our partners, Deep Silver, we have concluded that extending the release will allow us to deliver Shenmue III at its best. We promise to use this time to improve the quality of Shenmue III.

We cannot thank you enough for your enduring support.

The delay isn't a big deal to me, what I really want to know is if someone has talked Suzuki out of this bonkers idea to make another 3 Shenmue games after this.

I love Shenmue. It is my favourite game ever. I appreciate it also very much a marmite experience, probably somewhat dependent on how much you love kung-fu, yoda style teachings and immersing yourself in a incredibly detailed yet mundane other world.

I also feel that there is a lot of hype that newcomers to the season probably won't get it if they play it for the first time today considering the almost 20 year gap in release date, so I always feel like it needs a disclaimed to point out that this was a game that was released at the same time as Pokemon Snap, Dungeon Keeper 2 and the original Tony Hawks Pro Skater when considering it's qualities.

Seems anything but lazy to me. It has:

Choice of Japanese or English speech in both games
Saves can be carried over from Shenmue into Shenmue II on all platforms
Saving anywhere in both games
HD resolution rendering
Updated UI
New post processing effects for both games
Full controller support and configurable mouse and keyboard for PC users

And it's been confirmed you can toggle the awful xbox bloom effects in Shenmue 2.

I'm excited!

You could trade those winning cans for exclusive capsule toys that were only obtainable that way. I was very sad when they ended the (dial up!) connected service for Shenmue I and I couldn't collect ALL the capsule toys anymore. I hope they'll be available in the remake, and if not, well, I'm getting the PC version, some kind person will probably mod it in.
