You know what, I really liked TLJ. I think people are being a bit childish to think TLJ ruined Star Wars because Luke hosed up as a teacher. But right now my main concern is that JJ Abrams does anything and everything to piss off the guy who wrote this article,

https://www.cosmicbooknews.com/star-wars-rian-johnson-trilogy-canceled

like... the guy doesn't understand that sequels usually don't top their predecessor in box office numbers. Therefore Last Jedi was a "failure" (it wasn't) and Rian Johnson's trilogy is totally getting scrapped (it isn't -- there's no source for that in the article ???). I just want this man to be unhappy and cry and bitch and moan when he sees Episode 9 and it not be a JJ Abrams fan fluff piece...

I liked TLJ as well, but it left me dissappointed at the same time.

Saying the characterization is 'thin' is giving it too much credit; Jyn literally goes from dismissing the rebels as being as bad as stormtroopers to giving a pep talk to inspire them between scenes. Cassian is somehow both the ruthless operative and the noble idealist who won't shut up about hope. Bodhi has no motivation or character whatsoever.

Given that, it's a surprisingly decent movie given its characters are either conflicting messes of contradictory motivations or utter cyphers, but that's a fairly major flaw that I can see a lot of people can't move past.

I think it's significant that a lot of people seemed to really feel for the doomed rebels cut down by Vader, each trying to buy a few seconds more to get the plans to safety, but I haven't heard anyone who cared much about the deaths of the actual named characters.

I haven't rewatched it yet. But I'll do you one better. Who the hell was Cassian again?

You have:
-Jyn (who's name I remembered because everyone kept yelling it)
-Mustache man.
-Mind raped dude who isn't braindead.
-Donnie Yen.
-Guy with gun.
-K
-Krennic

That was the list I left the theater with.
Characterization is so thin I couldn't remember the majority of the names from the movie after it was over.
I now know some of the names. Thanks to the toys I now know Cassian is mustache man.

Despite that, I liked it. But then again I also like the Transformers movies.

The best part of TLJ is how it left the story in such a state that (to me) there is no clear easy path forward. Which is a pretty exciting place to be in.
Unless they take the cheap way out, add in a large time skip and suddenly both sides are back to full power again.

Considering the last batch of movies I fully expect Disney to take the easiest least creative way out.

https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/2018/12/episode-ix-rumors-timeline.html

    * Episode 9 takes place around a year after TLJ
    * Kylo Ren reforged his mask, it's now bonded with a red crystalline material. (something from Crait maybe?)
    * Rey rebuilt Anakin's lightsaber, it's now a black metal color
    * BB8 has a new companion, a smaller bull horn looking droid called D.O.
    * The Knights of Ren will finally appear in some form.

Kylo in a new mask.It might fit well. He has a throne now, so obviously, he would want a crown and a new mask is like a crown.

It's amusing that everyone seems to latch onto Kylo's news. No one cares about the other things.
I'm still hoping for Rey to get a double bladed saber as an extension of her staff training.

I think part of the reason the aliens in the sequel trilogy aren't as memorable is that they're barely on screen, and even when they show up they're just set dressing and almost never the focus of the action. How many original non-humans a) get more than 10 seconds screen time or b) speak a compete sentence?

-Snoke
-Maz
-Unkar Plutt
-The nuns on Luke's Island
-Porgs

Not that a lot of aliens (other than Chewie/Yoda/Jabba) were playing a major role in the OT, but some of them would at least be around long enough to make an impression and actually interact with the main characters-

-Jawas basically move the plot along for the first half hour of ANH
-Greedo gets a full scene
-Bib Fortuna and Salacious Crumb are largely set dressing for the Jabba stuff, but at least get enough reaction shots to establish personality
-Ewoks are like a full third of RoTJ
-Admiral Ackbar/the Mon Calamari
-Nien Nunb

Then of course the prequels are loaded with aliens that actually have a function in the story- the Gungans, the Nemoidians, Sebulba, Dex, the Kaminoans, the Geonosians, etc.

None of this is a value judgement, but the ST has absolutely made less of an effort to involve aliens in the story than any of the Lucas movies ever did.

I feel sad for Christie. :smith: I really wish Phasma was a better character. They even have some quotes that actually sound awesome. If only they'd actually done that. :( Seriously, if they'd just made TR-8R into her she would've stuck out as being memorable. She could've even survived the blast thanks to her reflective armor but then be blown clear. You could even let her role in TLJ be the exact same and she would've probably been bigger than Boba Fett.

To be fair, I was never that much into Boba Fett. But he had a cool armor, a jetpack, Darth Vaders respect and a unique ship. He caught Solo and got away with his frozen body and he tries to snipe Luke.

Meanwhile, Phasma had a cool armor. You can see where she falls short.
