i think some of the less ideological bullshit spreads by people trying to be "balanced" without understanding what that actually means. ive seen people read actual scientific studies and then in order to be "balanced" would read conspiracy theory posts and put both on the same level of trustworthiness

i hate this weird idea people have that the body "knows what to do" and that the best course is to let it cure itself

the human body is a jury rigged piece of poo poo that regularly destroys itself for no apparent reason and the entire point of medicine is to intervene and keep our stupid bodies from killing themselves

My fiancees oldest sister works for the state in a lab running tests on something. As soon as she has done that long enough for her student loans to go away she's planning to quit because "the private sector is where the money is"

Other things she hates about her job:
Yearly cost of living raise
Guaranteed raises that she can't bargain for
The fact that since she works for the state anyone can see how much her position makes
And again let me say she hates guaranteed yearly raises because she can't bargain for more money

a friend and i worked for a drywall company on a major job site. every other trade was unionized and made far more money with benefits. i told my friend I was considering joining the ibew but he was super opposed. according to him "unions make everyone get paid the same. if i work really hard then how will i get a raise?"

i burst out laughing and he got mad.

Operation Countryman was an investigation into police corruption in London in the late 1970s.[1] The operation was conducted between 1978–1982 at a total cost of £3 million and led to eight police officers being prosecuted, though none were convicted.
...
As the investigation proceeded, it began to emerge that the corruption was not limited to "a few bad apples" within the forces but was "historically and currently endemic" and "widespread throughout the hierarchical command rather than confined to those below the rank of sergeant."

Sex workers can be every bit as ignorant and regressive as anybody, and a lot of pornstars have terrible opinions regarding their fellow workers. Not all, not even most, but it's still a prpblematic amount. By all means the workers should have the controlling say in how they are regulated, but there needs to be checks and balances in place to keep other problems from occuring and to shut down abuses that come up.

this is true of literally every field though. why does sex work require special oversight?

Screaming Idiot posted:

Not specifically sex work, all fields need checks and balances beyond the workers themselves. While the workers may know what's best, independent observers will help to keep any particular group of workers in a goven field from obtaining too much influence. I only mentioned sex work in particular because it related to the subject at hand and because the workers there are especially vulnerable as the simple act of doing their "jobs" can leave them feeling abused and worse.

Sex work is very, very difficult to understand. Some enjoy it, others only do it to make ends meet, some were literally forced into it and know nothing else. It's a hard subject and rife with potential tragedy -- I have known people who worked in it who came away traumatized. A good friend of mine can't even enjoy sex anymore because of it.

the bolded sections are true of all jobs though. im not denying that sex workers face more violence or abuse than other types of workers but sex work is not inherently more exploitative or degrading than other fields. the difference is the lack of labor protections and the popular view that sex work is shameful which leads to people feeling impunity to assault and abuse sex workers.

One of my coworkers is at least super honest in his opinions that everything, including life, is a privilege you earn. Just yesterday I was talking with some other coworkers about how Florida's mail-in ballot system used to silently drop your ballot if you made any sort of mistake and it couldn't be scanned, without telling you or giving you a chance to correct it. He jumped in out of nowhere with "if you can't follow simple instructions you don't deserve to vote!!" So I'm like "yeah but it's a machine, it's not perfect, what if it rejects it through no fault of your own, because you used the wrong pen or something?" and he goes into this story with a mocking tone that I think he meant to sound absurd about how well what if the machine reads ballots better if you use an expensive pen vs. a cheap pen and gosh this could discriminate against poor people and I'm just like "yes, yes it could, good point, that's why this is a problem."

a former coworker told me that "slavery was a choice" because slaves could have just killed themselves. american conservativism is bafflingly hateful and selfish

Explaining how welfare in the us works to conservatives is always fun. They imagine it is way easier than it actually is. My dad was one of those "welfare should require you to find a job" people until he tried to apply for benefits. The application alone takes hours and requires huge amounts of documents and paperwork. It's always fun to try and get paperwork from your boss and landlord without letting them know what it's for.
