I seem to have a mild obsession with the Wyvern. I’ve mentioned the drat thing before. It’s a combination of the kind of armament I like to see on a mech (LL, LRM-10, SRM-6 and two small lasers - well-rounded but packs a punch! Looking at you, 10 tons heavier Shadow Hawk…) and one the most underwhelming models I’ve ever seen.

Just look at this lameass dude

I hate it! Spindly little twig arms, gormless face, body like an out-of-shape, moderately skinny man. In no way imposing or interesting. The 3D prints out there also don’t really excite me.

Then I realized there is a Wyvern IIC. And the model is…pretty cool, as far as these older sculpts go!

Just ordered one from Ral Partha and I think I’ll simply remove all of the extra guns the Clans added onto it - the two lasers in the left arm, the torso machine guns and the dick flamer. I think I can make the ripped-out locations look OK with green stuff. Then I will finally have a Wyvern that doesn’t disgust me.

So, seeing that BN broke kickstarter exclusitivity on a new release (the Battletech Encounters card/dice game) I decided to grab it just to see what it's about.

You play as one of eight Mercenary combat commands (the Dragoons, the Grey Death Legion, the Kell Hounds, the 21st Centauri Lancers, Eridiani Light Horse, Northwind Highlanders, McCarron's Armored Cavalry, and the Waco Rangers

The game is a race to 10 reputation. You earn reputation by completing contracts. A contract is one or more encounters where you have to defeat enemies. It's push your luck that each time you complete a contract, you can cash it out, earning C-Bills and Reputation, or you can risk the Reputation you've earned to go through again. You complete a contract by using up all six dice in your pool (one colored for your mercenary unit, the other white dice. (the dice you roll can be modified by equipment cards and special abilities.)

you draw two contracts and choose one, then flip an Encounter, checking the number you need to complete the encounter, then roll all your dice, then lock one or more dice that total equals the encounter value (for example, if the encounter value is 4, and you roll (1,3,4,5,5,6), you can either lock the 1 and 3 (equaling 4), or the 4 to complete that encounter, then flip the next one (the values for some of the tougher encounters can be as high as 13, the dreaded Lyran Scout Lance).

If you still have dice left in your pool after clearing an encounter, you need to make a decision. Continue on, or use an escape clause. If you use the escape clause, you earn c-bills for completed encounters, but do not earn reputation. You complete a contract by using up all the dice in your pool. You start with six, (one colored for your mercenary unit, the other white dice). the dice you roll can be modified by equipment cards and special abilities.

It's push your luck that each time you complete a contract, you can cash it out, earning C-Bills and Reputation, or you can risk the Reputation you've earned to go through another contract. The rewards are bigger on the 2nd contract (more reputation and more c-bills, but if you default/fail on an encounter, you lose ALL the reputation you would have earned for the contract run, and lose the c-bills you would have earned from the current contract (although the c-bills from any completed contract still are earned.

So, if one is lucky enough/skilled enough to complete a whole bunch of contracts in one go, you may go from last to winning the game, but you're always going to be facing a decision near the end of a contract, do you keep going, knowing that if you only have a couple dice left, you're going to need to be lucky in the encounter you draw, or do you risk the c-bills you have. Having the right equipment can help! (you can have up to 4 items worth of equipment)

Kinda interesting, I could see running this as a beer and pretzel game when the Battletech group is a player or two short, but it's even more dice-luck bound then battletech normally is..

Finished minis dump

First up, Republic of the Sphere Triarii/IlClan Era Stone's Revenge Mercenary Company (The Triarii Brigade was designed to exemplify the diversity of the Republic, and build goodwill across the new state. Stone's Revenge is a mercenary command made up of survivors of a dozen Republic units. Led by Nicodemus Niemeyer, they pursue anti-Wolf and Falcon jobs. Stone's Dream might be dead, but his revenge lives on.)

Next up is a short Steel Wolves Trinary (The Steel Wolves are descendants of Clan Wolf peoples who migrated to the Republic. Maintaining traditional Clan ways inside the new state, many came to chafe under Exarch Stone's desire for peace. Galaxy Commander Kal Radick led a Galaxy of disgruntled Wolves to carve out their own Empire during the Blackout, but he was killed by Anastasia Kerensky, who after a schizophrenic tenure, broke them apart to form a new mercenary command. Most of the Steel Wolves clung to their traditions, until the real Clan Wolf declared them dezgra. After that, they swallowed their pride and went merc to survive.)

Lastly are my favorite, two Spirit Cat Binaries (The Spirit Cats are descendants of Clan Nova Cat peoples who migrated to the Republic. Maintaining traditional Clan Ways, many Nova Cats stayed loyal to the Republic even in its waning time. But Galaxy Commander Kev Rosse foresaw a vision of his Clan being utterly annihilated if the Nova Cats did not find a haven. Thus he created his Spirit Cat Galaxy, followers of his vision determined to find safe harbour in the Dark Age. Eventually most of them migrated to the planet Marik after its conquest. After the Nova Cat genocide by the Draconis Combine, it became the last home of the once proud Nova Cat people.)

Honestly I just primed them red with army painter pure red and then a single coat of AP pure red over it. And their red tone wash for nooks and crannies. I am not fancy, but thank you.

A few of my Triarii got the red a little too thick, probably primed them wrong, but I think the wash is taking care of that.

Anyways, what is the estimated amount of time needed to complete metallic sections, regimental accent colors, and cockpit jeweling for 16 'Mechs? I figure if I can take others' numbers and multiply them by 1.5x or 2x, I could fit it into the remains of any schedule I have.

Hard to say but I'd put it at "a few evenings if I can get about an hour or two of hobby time at night". If you stick to it, I think you could do it in a week or two at least.

For me, paintining speed has a much much smaller impact on my painting output than if I can get consistent painting time each night for a while. Just plugging away, day after day, that's how you paint armies.

Are you happy now?
What's going on with the Mercenaries kickstarter delivery costs? Lots of comments of paying 50% of the cost as shipping? Did this happen with the previous kickstarters? We're not in a pandemic anymore. Perhaps the extra cost is because they hired the delivery to a Jumpship.

quote:

"(...) We are using at least six local hubs around the world:

United States, Canada, United Kingdom, European Union, Australia, and

Asia. We expect to Offer "local shipping rates" to over 90% of countries,

worldwide. Catalyst will cover all freight, import duties, and handling fees.

Backers will be responsible for local delivery and VAT.

Catalyst will continue to work on this in order to provide the very best

Narrator: They Did Not.

Also Backerkit sent no email about it, the only reason I knew to check was the Facebook posts of people complaining about it.

Delivery is expensive, but some of the stuff I saw pertains to Europeans and paying VAT, which is horrendously expensive.

Delivery+VAT+VAT on delivery is 50% of the pledge level I had, yeah

I've heard that shipping by sea between Asia and Europe is very expensive due to geopolitics, so that might be a factor.

I just checked mine and I'm at roughly $50 shipping on the $150 tier without add-ons, but I would theoretically be shipping from Asia to Asia. Seems fairly steep if they're not also including a deposit for local import duties.

Pledged at the 150 level, they added 38 bucks shipping US. Sounds like I'm not getting rooked as hard as some other folks, but TBH this is the first time ever a Kickstarter has ever come at me for a second round hat in hand to pay the post man. I just assumed like other stuff the cost was baked in; didn't realize this was a thing. I guess this is the new way they do things now.

I put around 550 on the kickstarter, and have about $120 in shipping, so 20%. I figured it would be between 10-20%, so not surprised. Lot of forcepacks in mine.

Some of the people on the official forums are saying shipping is near 50% on small orders. One person just ordered the box set ($80) and is getting charged $42.00 in shipping.

Folks on discord are saying the distributor is doing a flat shipping scheme, charging $1 for every $3 pledged. If that's true... lol, scam (Not CGL, just the shipper for being utterly lazy).
