Thunderbolt in progress I picked up some new Red and Yellow over the weekend and much happier with the darker shades (although I don't have the camera skills to really show how different it feels). I'm going to try and be serious about my shadowing and highlighting on this one. I'll track down some floor polish this weekend to try that out. When it comes to washing something like this- should I just use a black ink? Or try to get a red to match with the base color? Also I went with a darker blackened metal for the base metal areas, and figure I'll drybrush or just highlight some of the areas with my lighter tarnished/silver metal. edit- inside and undersides of arms are probably the worst part of these minis. I've been using a grey contrast paint on a white prime and then I mostly leave the undersides of arms alone. It's shaded. Edit: Who would win in a Trial between Mike Ditka and God? Trick question. Mike Ditka is God.

Alright, whatever mad demon possessed me to paint a bunch of mechs in the colors of the NFC Central has been sated. I thought about doing the Bucs in their classic, NFC Central appropriate colors, but that orange is way too bright and would have looked terrible.

They're plastic, not PVC, but they're solid. Closer approximation would be the Bones Black material Reaper is quietly switching to.

PoptartsNinja posted:They're plastic, not PVC, but they're solid. Closer approximation would be the Bones Black material Reaper is quietly switching to. How is mold line cleaning like with that? It's a real pain on the regular Bones material I've heard the black stuff is harder. Can they be scraped off or do they need slicing/sanding off? How tall are the new Elementals? How do they compare with Epic scale minis? Eyeballing them they give the impression of being larger than a 6mm 40k Terminator. I was wondering if 15mm figures might be better as proxies.

I don't own any Epic scale minis, so I can't really do a size comparison. I'm in the middle of priming my elementals so it might be hard to gauge their height at the moment. They're to scale with the 'Mechs, though. I'd estimate most 'Mechs to be somewhere between 4 and 6 Elementals tall, which is about right. I don't own a mold line scraper but I'd say the difficulty of mold line removal is significantly less than it is for pewter. I haven't trimmed the mold lines on either of those 'Mechs yet, but one of the advantages 'Mechs have over humans is that there's generally a sharp corner somewhere that can be used to disguise a mold line. They're definitely not flawless, but I'd say they're designed to be beginner friendly and usually require minimal clean up. The worst mold line I've seen was on my Awesome, which had a minor factory defect on its right arm PPC. PoptartsNinja fucked around with this message at 14:42 on Jan 23, 2021 |

I'm usually super anal about mold lines and these mechs definitely have some visible ones, but they're a real non issue on these models. I just cannot make myself care enough to clean them when there assembled out of the box and I can just spray and paint.

Random fun facts I discovered while trying to decide what colors to paint my minis: - Somerset has a continent named Cheddar. Goddamn it. - Kristen Redmond's command was part of Vau Galaxy, the colors I'd already decided to go with for my Jade Falcons. Her cluster took Somerset, Nicolai Malthus likely wasn't even present. Kristen Redmond piloted a Hellbringer and probably killed Andrew Steiner. The 94th Striker Cluster did more than just annihilate the Somerset Training Battalion, they also wiped out the entire 8th Arcturan Guards RCT and the 2nd New Ivaarsen Chasseurs (the Chasseurs were officially lost on Anywhere so it's not clear if this is survivors running for help or just a stray battalion that was hanging out for R&R). The 2nd Chasseurs were rebuilt in 3062, but the 8th Arcturan Guards were never rebuilt. Kristen Redmond annihilated an entire FedCom RCT. - Nikolai Malthus's command, the Falcon's Claws Keshik, does not appear to exist (which means it was disbanded ignominiously and the Jade Falcons don't talk about it). It was most likely Vandervahn Chistu's command cluster, which probably would have made it a Gamma Galaxy formation; but theoretically could have been a command cluster for Vau Galaxy (Angelina Matlov wouldn't really have warranted that sort of protection). Nicolai Malthus's Summoner was probably green. - The Falcon Guards are a Gamma Galaxy formation, so Aidan Pryde's Timber Wolf should be painted in appropriate camo (probably forest camo because the Jade Falcons are lazy) with green highlights. - Clan Smoke Jaguar's Nu Galaxy was kicked off of Port Arthur in the MechCommander game. - Port Arthur was officially seized by the 1st Davion Guards (with help from the 17th Benjamin Regulars and 2nd Legion of Vega), but in MechCommander they used the blue and gold parade colors of the FedCom RCTs rather than the Davion Guards' Blue-White-Red-White-Blues. - The 17th Benjamin Regulars and 2nd Legion of Vega sport colors nearly identical to Clan Smoke Jaguar's Nu Galaxy, so if you ever wonder why there were so many Smoke Jaguars running around in JagerMechs or other IS equipment you can always imagine your crazy Davion company commander is secretly attacking the Kuritans because Colonel Soap Opera Actress decided it was a great idea to equip Zeta Company with nothing but Firestarters and Pegasus Hovertanks. - The most common non-camo primary color used by: - - the Federated Suns is Green (Ok, this isn't news to me, but it might be for someone). Not camo, just army drab. - - the Free Worlds League is White (technically purple, because there are so many Marik Militia regiments, but the Marik Militia doesn't count because they're the only ones who use purple as their primary color). The FWL is by far the least likely to use camo. I'd joke and say that not participating in any real wars for fifty years really screws with doctrines, but we can blame Thomas Marik's Knights of the Inner Sphere and the League's Wobbie ties for this. - - the Draconis Combine is gray (only their super elites get to use red) - - the Lyran Alliance is blue (way to crush those stereotypes, House Steiner!). Also gently caress whoever decided half their regiments use white+color checker squares because that poo poo is awful to paint at 6mm. - - the Capellan Confederation is hard to say but it's probably either tan/khaki, brown, or red (green's definitely up there, though!), they're by far the most likely to use camo and have the most "our parade scheme is just whatever camo we happened to be using that year" regiments. PoptartsNinja posted:Random fun facts I discovered while trying to decide what colors to paint my minis: I don't know if you have it yet, but Battletech Legends goes into Nikolai Malthus. That's good to know. I was hoping they were going to officially make him Vandervahn Chistu's wetworks specialist; but instead he was just a glorified Star Commander who showed up and shouted orders at people whenever their real commanders were napping. No wonder Kristen Redmond hated him. Edit: I'm looking forward to having some real Vau Galaxy to pose next to my cartoon-colored knockoffs. VVV Yeah, those are the ones I'm talking about, and I was using hyperbole for comedic effect. 6 of the 36 or so unique Lyran Alliance paintjobs have checkers. Was it ever explained anywhere why the Jade Falcons' Vau Galaxy is the only (?) Galaxy that doesn't have a Greek letter as its designation? The Luthien scenario pack named the attacking units things like "44th Jaguar Attack Galaxy", "4th Nova Cat Assault Galaxy" etc. but I think those were retconned/never mentioned by name again.

They're not, but the easiest answer is that the Jade Falcons are immensely stupid. The non-canon answer is: Clans Wolf, Blood Spirit, Star Adder, Nova Cat, Goliath Scorpion, Ghost Bear, and Smoke Jaguar all have or had Tau galaxies at one point or another: It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they revealed the Wolves took offense to Clan Jade Falcon also having a Tau Galaxy at some point and fought a Trial of Grievance to force them to change their name to something else; and the only thing that would surprise me even less would be the Jade Falcons getting really loving petty about it afterwards and saying "Fine. We are Vau Galaxy now. With a V." (and then referring to Vau internally designation Peregrine Galaxy from then on). V is the very next consonant after T. I mean, pettiness is the same reason Clan Wolf's Alpha Galaxy uses Green and Gold as their primary colors. "Jade Wolves" indeed. Edit: The more I think about this, the more true this seems. Clan Wolf Tau Galaxy's colors: Khaki, Light Gray, and Red. Clan Jade Falcon Vau Galaxy's colors: Light Gray and Red. PoptartsNinja fucked around with this message at 22:45 on Jan 23, 2021 |

Quick question, is there any meaningful difference between Clan and Inner Sphere 'Mechs at the current point in the timeline?
|
# ? Jan 23, 2021 23:17 |
|
Yes. Inner Sphere mechs are still largely Star League-based, with the occasional intermixed bit of Clan Tech. They also have a lot of unique bits that the Clans don't field, although the Clans occasionally return the favour by building a Clan chassis and gluing some of those Inner Sphere bits on. The tech gap has closed, but overall it still exists.

Also if you are an ER Variable Speed X-Pulse Ace in the House militaries you probably get your machine rebuilt with all the Clantech you want. Meanwhile the traitors fighting for the Clans are usually doing so in the same IS hardware they've always had.

Finished all the mechs I was able to get from the Clan Invasion. This was a fun little project and now that I have a good selection, I might start trying to field some Clan stuff. Also, here's a side-by-side of the Summoner from the 25th anniversary box and the current design. The new one is obviously superior, but the original is not without its charms, kind of like a video game render brought to life.
