They didn't just put spears on sticks- they put hammers, axe blades, hooks for grabbing and pulling riders off horses, claws for holding people prisoner, and many combinations thereof. There are so many polearm weapons out there few scholars can remember and describe them all. God drat that's a lot of words when all he had to write was 'hey remember Monty Python???'
