JOIN THE DISCORD: https://discord.gg/ac7cwa3 JOIN THE STEAM GROUP! https://steamcommunity.com/groups/artiho THE TOURNAMENT HAS BEGUN! Please message your opponent on Steam tourney chat or on discord! Artifact is the Half-Life 2 of card games - Gabe Newell Artifact is the first new full game from Valve since Dota 2 was officially released in July 9, 2013 (Not counting The Lab, their VR minigame/tech demos that was released April 5, 2016). At first it was announced in 2017 as the Dota 2 Card Game, it has since dropped that moniker and is now being promoted as a collaboration between Valve and Richard Garfield (creator of Magic the Gathering). When the game was announced though, there were no details just a teaser trailer that was dropped in the middle of the biggest Dota 2 tournament: The International, or TI for short: Artifact booed at TI7 last year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR4jPtrDCLo Artifact cheered at TI8 this year https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVGy0NEQIkk&t=76s Since then Valve has actually been giving out more details when they invited many card game players and press to show them the game and reveal that Richard Garfield was working on it, creating a lot of buzz. Gabe Newell himself even gave a presentation about the game to press: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mERhtoD21rU Gameplay So the game seems to actually be a card version of Dota 2. You have three lanes, and in those lanes you have towers. The goal is to destroy the towers and take the enemie's ancient (or base/throne/etc). The cards used feature heroes, creeps and items from Dota 2 as well as completely new original characters created for Artifact. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnwJ1P3hcqs As I'm typing this up, there are already a few broadcast studios preparing to cover Artifact at PAX such as: https://twitter.com/BTSartifact/ https://artifaction.gg/ So Valve basically created Hearthstone? Nope! Artifact is being created as a trading card game where you can buy, sell, and trade cards with friends or people on the steam marketplace. The plan is for the game to be as balanced as possible and Note on RNG: The game WILL have RNG elements. Here is a video of Richard Garfield explaining more details: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yebqetiISz0&t=194s BTS interviews Lumi and Fwosh and they talk about the RNG here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b39MtIYUFaQ&t=211s Plus someone over at the artifact reddit did a write up on the RNG mechanics: https://www.reddit.com/r/Artifact/comments/9cc9x1/in_defense_of_rng_in_artifact/ Pricing Artifact is NOT FREE-TO-PLAY. The game will cost $19.99 and will launch this year on November 11, 2018. From Dave Lombardi: quote:two pre-made "base" decks of 54 cards each ("5 heroes, 9 items, and 40 other cards") and 10 sealed packs of cards, which each include 12 random cards, one of which is guaranteed to be "rare." Additional 12-card packs will be sold directly by Valve at $2 a pop at launch. Cool what can I play this game on Artifact is going to release on PC this year and will be launching on iOS and Android sometime in 2019. So how the gently caress do I play this game? Thankfully Valve gave early access to a lot of good content creators so that they could create Artifact content specifically on teaching people how to play and show the game off. Here are a couple of my favorite videos and articles that will teach new players how to play. its basically like playing dota 2 but as a card game, no joke The guy who made basically THE guide on how to play Dota is here with a guide on how to play Artifact: Purge! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJXOHi9vSsc Beyond The Summit's Lumi wrote an in-depth guide here: http://bts.gg/artifact The Hearthstone Player's Guide to Artifact: by Liquid`Fr0zen (Hearthstone Pro) https://drawtwo.gg/articles/view/888c857d-c878-487b-9738-3889a5b1550c The Magic Player's Guide to Artifact: by Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa (Magic Pro, and member of the MTG Hall of Fame) https://drawtwo.gg/articles/view/5163e6e8-5a33-4daa-8fed-f5fb292e89ef Best decks for day one: https://drawtwo.gg/articles/23-the-best-decks-for-day-one Drafting tips: https://drawtwo.gg/articles/best-artifact-decks-for-day-one Artibuff's blog on how to play Artifact: https://www.artibuff.com/blog/2018-11-05-an-introduction-to-artifact EG.Swim has a series of guide videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yDs1rtcJOU Stancifka's guide to building Item Deck in Limited: https://twitter.com/StanCifka MONETIZATION Valve has clarified a few things right before launching the Beta: https://playartifact.com/news/2535985526495756390/ quote:We want to take a few minutes to talk about some of those missing features now: And here's the ArtiFAQ from Valve: https://playartifact.com/news/1721959164054855755 The REAL Goobusters fucked around with this message at 20:20 on Nov 29, 2018 |

Is this the Dota 2 thread? Real-talk I'm interested in this game but hope it's not too insane. I need a card game to fill the void ever since I quit Hearthstone.

Valve just shut down the Artifaction stream since the guy was streaming the screen where SirActionSlacks and Bruno (now Valve employee working on Artifact) were casting games.

First looks from the booth: Staff are really tight lipped about new characters/lore until open beta. The pub tourney is going super slow because mechanics are not being explained to players until they are seated. Rounds seem super quick but entire games can slog. There's a sac 1 lane to win 2 meta that some folks are not picking up on. Zeus PA and Chen seem OP at this low tier. Shopping phase seems super RNG.

Beta is in October by the way. They'll be giving out keys to everyone who went to The International. I'm guessing it wont be too hard to get a key.

Eh. The game may look good, but the whole "have to keep putting in money to keep playing" kinda turns me off the entire thing. Maybe it's not MTG in terms of gameplay, but it sure is in economy. And MTG decks even in Standard can cost hundreds of bucks!

They seem to be making a reasonable effort to keep the costs from getting out of control. You're guaranteed a rare card per pack, there are no rarer cards than rare, packs are half as expensive as MTG, there's a 3 card per deck limit instead of 4 and the deck size is also significantly smaller at 5+25+9 cards. It should come out significantly cheaper than MTG. But yeah inevitably you'll have to pump more money into expansions and whatnot. My biggest worry is what they are doing or not with matchmaking, since they haven't said anything specific but keep talking about how great old school join a chatroom type poo poo is. That sucked actually!

Eh, not enough to make me stop playing Eternal, which has a very generous F2P economy and will probably cost less in the long run. At this price point, the game has to be GOTY for me to consider it. They really should have a way to get cards at a reasonable rate by just playing the game.

wouldn't be surprised if many have multiple beta keys since you tie two passes to your account from the international if you had midweek & finals tickets. those who went to both should probably get at least 2 passes

Looking at the videos released today, I'm surprised by how polished the game is already. Little things like mousing over your opponent's hand to see how long they've had each card in hand shows great attention to detail. And the animation for Zeus's signature card where it sweeps over the board and heroes that it kills get exploded is great. I'm also excited by a number of features that I always wanted in Hex, but were never implemented before it crashed and burned. Namely, lending of decks, custom tournament formats/game types, and the fact that they already seem to have a spectator client up and running (and will hopefully also let you save/watch replays of your games).

So you won't be able to trade cards directly via Steam trading? That sucks. I really hope they do a public beta before launch so I can try the game out.

I imagine direct trading of cards would be really difficult to implement in a managed system but you can probably trade them the same way you can trade any steam community item through your friends list? I don't see a reason why the cards wouldn't be treated differently than my dota inventory, but who knows.
