No posts about the earthquake and tsunami that hit the Philippines? Official death count is about 800, but they couldn't reach a city of 300k people until today, and there are a lot of smaller towns and villages in the are they have no contact with. I wouldn't be surprised if the number of deaths reaches 5 digits :(

A human consumes a surprisingly big amount of water each day (cooking, drinking, washing, cleaning, etc.). And the industrial processes supplying you with all manner of things, from electricity and clothes to food and streets to travel on require a fuckton more. A single non-billionaire cannot store any relevant quantities of water.

The Khashoggi story is nuts. Highly regarded journalist who's often been critical of Bin Salman, especially in regards to his war in Yemen, he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul to get a marriage certificate. He already suspected that he could be in danger, but underestimated the severity of the danger. He only left his mobile phone with his fiance. Who called the police after waiting several hours outside the consulate for him. Now Turkish authorities believe him to have been killed by a special Saudi execution squad that arrived just a bit earlier from Saudi Arabia. The Turks think his body was then chopped up and disposed off.

Best part of this? He was a close personal friend of Erdogan.

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2018/10/erdogan-closely-case-saudi-critic-jamal-khashoggi-181007143237024.html

quote:

Erdogan told reporters on Sunday that authorities were looking into all video surveillance footage of the mission's entrances and monitoring all inbound and outbound flights since the writer disappeared on Tuesday.

"I am following the [issue] and we will inform the world whatever the outcome [of the official probe]", Erdogan said.

"God willing, we will not be faced with a situation we do not want. I still am hopeful," adding that "it is very, very upsetting for us that it happened in our country".

...

A leading critic of the Saudi government's reform programme under the stewardship of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS), Khashoggi had been living in self-imposed exile in the US for over a year.

Al Jazeera's Jamal Elshayyal, reporting from Istanbul, said Turkish authorities are trying to walk a fine line so as not to damage relations between the two countries.

"There is an attempt by the Turkish government to try to find a way out of this whereby there isn't a full collapse of diplomatic relations, at least a temporary freeze between Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

"Because, if indeed, Turkish authorities can prove unequivocally that Saudi agents essentially murdered a journalist inside the consulate in Istanbul, it would require some sort of strong reaction."

"One of the political sources that Al Jazeera spoke to on Saturday said it was confident Turkey's reaction would be 'very strong'."

This is just nuts. But Trump and a lot of the foreign policy establishment in Washington is still embracing Mohammad bin Salman as someone who supposedly westernizes and liberalizes Saudi Arabia. And while he did allow women to drive cars for example, he was still busy jailing and executing any and all critics of his regime.

How much of an absolute retard do you have to be to say that Muslims in Israel have more rights than Muslims in any other part of the Middle East like I can't even with this

The sad part is that this statement would be true if he amended it to "in some parts of the Middle East" :negative:

Some Muslims in Israel have more of some rights than some Muslims in some other parts of the Middle East is a fair statement.

Out of curiosity: Which rights do Shia Muslims in Saudi Arabia have that Israeli Muslims lack? Just as an example?

I'm speaking strictly of those Muslims living in Israel proper, Palestinians clearly have less rights than basically any other group in the ME.

Palestinians are among those Muslims living under Israeli rule, not sure why you would qualify it as Muslims in Israel "proper". Is it because Israel fenced them off, so they don't count?

Perhaps we are talking past each other? For me, Palestinians don't live in Israel. They live in Palestine, which Israel is illegally occupying. If you want to quibble with this, I'll correct my question:

Which rights do Shia Muslims living in Saudi Arabia enjoy that non-Palestinian Muslims living in Israel lack?

Good news?

Alaska governor Walker suspends campaign, endorses Democrat Begich

quote:

Alaska Gov. Bill Walker, an independent, suspended his campaign for reelection on Friday and endorsed former Democratic Sen. Mark Begich — scrambling the state's three-way gubernatorial race with just over two weeks until Election Day.

The move, first reported by the Alaska Dispatch News, comes just days after Walker's lieutenant governor, Byron Mallott, resigned, citing "inappropriate comments" he had made to an unidentified woman. Walker appointed state Department of Health and Social Services Commissioner Valerie Davidson to the post and vowed to press on with his reelection campaign.

But, on Friday afternoon, Walker announced at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention that he was ending his bid for a second term and posted a statement to his campaign's website. He said the decision to abandon his campaign was "not the first difficult decision I have made this week, but it is one I know I must make."

Walker's decision could boost Begich against Republican Mike Dunleavy, a former state senator. Recent poling showed Walker and Begich hovering at around a quarter of the vote, with Dunleavy well ahead, with support over 40 percent. Walker will remain on the ballot, with Mallott as his running mate, though neither is an active candidate.

Even the UK poisonings are so much better than what the Saudis did. Theoretically, they could have been poisoned by anybody. There's no direct, irrefutable, graphic evidence that it really was the Russians. But everybody knows it was the Russians. That's of course intended, since it's a warning to other double agents and traitors. Russia WILL get you! But Putin can still go around denying everything, and nobody can show him pictures of the two Russians beheading the Skripals.

On the other hand, no spin can save the Saudis. He went into their embassy and never left it. A special team arrived with a bone saw. The Turks claim to have audio recordings. They've apparently found parts of his body in the Saudi consul general's garden. Early on, there were even reports about possible video recordings. Now it seems as if the Turks might indeed have video footage:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...e-idUSKCN1MW2HA

quote:

He ran social media for Saudi Arabia’s crown prince. He masterminded the arrest of hundreds of his country’s elite. He detained a Lebanese prime minister. And, according to two intelligence sources, he ran journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s brutal killing at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul by giving orders over Skype.

Saud al-Qahtani, a top aide for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is one of the fall guys as Riyadh tries to stem international outrage at Khashoggi’s death. On Saturday, Saudi state media said King Salman had sacked Qahtani and four other officials over the killing carried out by a 15-man hit team.

...

According to one high-ranking Arab source with access to intelligence and links to members of Saudi Arabia’s royal court, Qahtani was beamed into a room of the Saudi consulate via Skype.

He began to hurl insults at Khashoggi over the phone. According to the Arab and Turkish sources, Khashoggi answered Qahtani’s insults with his own. But he was no match for the squad, which included top security and intelligence operatives, some with direct links to the royal court.

A Turkish intelligence source relayed that at one point Qahtani told his men to dispose of Khashoggi. “Bring me the head of the dog”, the Turkish intelligence source says Qahtani instructed.

It is not clear if Qahtani watched the entire proceedings, which the high-ranking Arab source described as a “bungled and botched operation”.

The Arab source and the Turkish intelligence source said the audio of the Skype call is now in the possession of Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. The sources say he is refusing to release it to the Americans.

Amazing. Simply amazing. How can you botch this so much? There might be video, relayed over Skype to Saudi Arabia!!! There's no deniability if Erdogan can provide photos of the chopped up body found in the Saudi consul general's garden, no deniability if the can provide an audio recording of the killing, no deniability at all if he can provide video of the murder! They couldn't have hosed this up worse if they tried.
