WHAT IS IT?

It's a multiplayer, team based FPS, with napoleonic era muskets and tactics. The game has been in alpha and beta for a long time, but will become available for general public on 3rd December.

ABOUT THIS GAME
War of Rights is a multiplayer game set during the perilous days of the American Civil War, in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862. Campfire Games is devoted to presenting the gruesome and glorious elements of the period, while maintaining the highest level of historical accuracy and realism as is possible with the wonders of CRYENGINE.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- Massive battles: Take part in engagements consisting of 150 players.

- Tailored for line formation teamplay: Custom formation buff mechanic system rewards sticking together by lessening the suppression effects, the morale cost for the team when dying and the flag bearer respawn rate.

- Historical accuracy: Period correct uniforms, weapons, manual of arms animations, battlefields, objectives & drill camps.

- Regimental pride: More than 70 researched and recreated regiments all supporting uniforms for all ranks (Private to Colonel) and player classes.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- Immersive communication: In-game 3D voice system.

- Recreated battlefields: More than 30 historically accurate skirmish areas of the Battle of Antietam & Siege of Harpers Ferry to play on as well as three drill camps to perfect your formation forming abilities or simply exchange battle stories at the campfire.

- Player classes: Private, NCO, Flag Bearer & Officer playable from every regiment featured and covering all ranks from Private to Colonel.

- Community focus: A strong company (player organized clans) focus with a dedicated company tool and forum sections devoted to in-game event creation.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

- Powerful game engine: Powered by CRYENGINE V, War of Rights is capable of providing visuals unmatched by any other Civil War game.

- More than a game: War of Rights is a vision that keeps expanding its scale. The project is entirely crowdfunded and has been developed on for the past 6 years. We consider it more of an ever evolving artistic piece rather than a final product with a targeted release deadline with set features.

Players in the game will be able to play on multiple battlefields of the campaign, from the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where the Siege of Harper's Ferry took place, to the ridgelines of South Mountain, and to the meandering waters of Antietam Creek at the Battle of Antietam. Additionally, players will also be able to choose from a list of regiments that fought in each battle as well as what rank to fight as, whether they want to slog it out as a lowly private, or if you want to orchestrate the carnage and mayhem as a major general.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Uniforms and bodily features will all be customizable for other players to see as you march and fight in the lines of battle according to the tactics of the period. As a General, you will operate in your headquarters equipped with a map of the battlefield and constantly receiving reports of friendly and enemy positions. Send out new orders to the regiments to move forward, or fall back - all in real time. The orders will move down the chain of command, to the Colonels, Majors, down to the Captains in charge of the individual regiments, all of whom have the option to follow the orders of their trusted commander, or rebel against his wishes and fight as you see fit.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Each map contains a period reconstruction of the buildings, farms, forests, roads, and rocks as they were in 1862 so players can fight through the streets of Harper's Ferry, in the wooded heights of Fox's Gap at South Mountain, or in the cornfields and Bloody Lanes of Antietam. Players can feel the whiz of deadly shot and shell fly by their bodies, or hit their comrades or themselves as they scream in a bloody hail from their wounds. Limbs will fly and blood will be spilt once again as Campfire Games brings the fighting of the Civil War right to the player's computer screen!

⠀Will you heed the Union call against the traitors? Or will you fight to defend your family and livelihood with the Confederacy? You decide!

FAQ:

-Are there AI?
no, no AI. All people, duking it out. 150 players total, with 75 per side.

What are the roles?
-Private, Flag Bearer, NCO, and Officer are the basic roles now. You can choose at the beginning. Officers die if they don't support their troops by being close to them.

-What is the game mode?
It's a sort of a "push", that moves the game area from one part to another, with the morale system deciding who wins.

-Cavalry?
Not yet. Just infantry. Dismounted cavalry use carbines, though.

-How to communicate?
Game has 3d local chat to yell at the people next to you. Works really well.

MORALE SYSTEM
Yes, players can't see any stats. There are no death stats, no kill logs, and no visible ticket counters. You can only see the four basic states of your side's morale:

BATTLE READY
The losses are minimal, high spirited men!

ENGAGED
Took a few losses, morale is still high!

TAKING LOSSES
Casualties are rising, men are concerned.

BREAKING
Reinforcements almost depleted, low morale.

Army morale is like "team tickets", which gets reduced for each killed soldier.
If you are in formation, the ticket loss is not as much as when soldiers being killed out of line.
So, if you die out of line, your team will loose 5 tickets, compared to 1 ticket being in line formation.

Being in formation will grant you buffs, like better reload, less suppression rate

OH MY GOD IT IS LIKE HOLDFAST OR MOUNT AND BLADE NAPOLEONIC WARS!?

Yes. A lot, with the jovial atmosphere with voice chat and all, but this game is far smoothers, and runs a lot nicer. It is not janky, and the animations are very fluid. It looks a lot better.

These screenshots are from my computer, so the game looks very cinematic in-action too and not just prepared shots:

The key to Harpers Ferry is to capture the gas station on the Southern side of the Potomac. That way Maryland citizens will travel over en masse to buy Newports and other cigarettes by the carton.

Yeah I can’t tell if there is a lot to unpack in the game title or not. Luckily devs have been pretty hostile towards confederate revisionists on forums.

But they are danish, so they could be a little deaf to the undertones.

I mean look, as someone who enjoys this particular kind of nerdery, at least in the company of goons who don't take it seriously, I am interested at minimum.

But there's no undertones to that name, that's out and out Bad and while it's good that they're intolerant of Confederate wankjobs unless they outright state a position on that sort of thing I'm reluctant to give them money.

I'm just a total piece of shit and I'm not sure why I keep posting on this site. Christ, I have spent years with idiots giving me bad advice about online dating and haven't noticed that the thread I'm in selects for people that can't talk to people worth a damn.

Basically. It's an implication/outright rewriting that the ACW was about states rights and not about owning human beings.

New patch:

- Vastly improved the loading time while still precaching the required assets. Previous loading time on the Drill Camp on our test system was 70 seconds. New loading time is 15 seconds.

- Made the loading screen show some of the things that are currently being loaded. Additional elements will be added soon to the loading progress.

- Reload is now automatically cancelled if one of the movement keys are being held for more than 0.5 seconds.

- Further increased the likelyhood of the game properly closing down when exiting.

- Minor character improvements.

I wanna play this game as a black Union private, and just shoot Johnny Reb all day long.

Nothing would be finer than a game that lets me shoot subhuman slave-holding traitors in the face.

Blasting James Horner's score for Glory in team chat the whole time.

I've yet to play on the Confederate side. The 3d voice chat is also often pretty hilarious on Union side and the game just becomes a rinse and repeat of fighting in line, holding, pushing, charging, then repeat. And it's fun.

I kind of want to give this a try after I finish my current playthrough of Fallout: New Vegas, but I suspect most of the goons in this game will be American and I won't be able to play with them.

Do a lot of Europeans play this?

Main playerbase is European, actually. Game is more active on EU prime than NA prime.

If I buy this for my new computer based on my love for civil war history am I going to be depressed by people blasting Johnny Rebel songs and making GBS threads up the chat with nonsense about Dixie? do they have any mechanics to represent the asymmetry of the armaments in the later parts of the war?

Given 'War of Rights is a multiplayer game set during the perilous days of the American Civil War, in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862. ' I doubt it...

Yeah as mentioned they chose the particular timeframe to best balance the gameplay with realism. If you are looking to use professionals soldiers and modern rifles to hunt down scattered confederate local levy with flintlocks, this ain't the game.

I have been playing since it hit Steam early access, and it seems like there's usually at least a couple busy servers. It is definitely still in alpha, albeit usually a playable one. The last patch seems to have broken things a little, though, so I've been having trouble connecting to some servers. It's definitely rough, but has a ton of potential.

Vahakyla

Yeah there are always a couple servers near full to play on, but that's it. In that way, it also like Verdun. You'll always have a full place to play in, but not a lot of choice.

Orv

The devs gave a pretty satisfactory answer on their name choice (basically what you said, Vahakyla) but it's still kind of maybe a bad idea.

Even so I grabbed it and aside from the typical niche sperg shooter Steam sale issue where it floods with morons who have no idea what they're doing, which I was one of, it seems pretty good. Loads and runs remarkably well for what it's on and how it looks, no real issues so far.

The fact that it grabs your view while reloading is extremely off putting when it happens the first time you're in a line under fire. :stare:

This game nowadays has DLSS, better server tools, more player slots, up to 300, cavalry, artillery, dynamic battlefields, et cetera.

it is in a really good place, and most servers ban really swiftly for racism.
