I mean, that's a thing with a lot of 80s yaoi - the main characters are 'pure' in contrast to the gross world around them. It's only partly a gay thing, it's partly just a product of the economic boom in that period leading to a lot of cultural excess and strange crime that got brought up on tv and in turn influenced art. it's also partly a shoujo thing. of course this is reason number 76 why trying to update the story to take place in modern times is dumb. it's a product of the period it was made in, which is also the period its set in, and having that context is pretty critical to getting why its important and worthwhile, imo.
