Some of those are certainly deliberate grotesques. The beaver, though, I fear is real. Big balls because beaver musk was itself a saleable commodity.

The beaver drawing was definitely based on a pelt, you can see where the cuts would have been I really appreciate the attention to detail drawing both an anus and vulva on the crocodile, a creature that has neither

E: Also, the 16th and 17th centuries are usually considered the Early Modern period, not the medieval period. Lotta people get that mixed up!

PetraCore posted:Wouldn't there be some ignorance with extremely foreign animals that it's hard to import, so chances to see them would be rare but the artist would have heard of them? Like, not the snail, but there's a lot of elephants in there that look like they're being vaguely based on boars and then edited to fit descriptions of elephants, and then there's one in the comments drawn from a live reference and it's a lot different. How much is contemporary cartoony stylization vs not having a reference for stuff like elephants and tigers? It looks like it's based on Durer's earlier BEAUTIFUL rhinoceros picture. Anyway, I sort of don't blame anyone for drawing crocodiles and hippos wrong. Imagine getting close enough for an accurate image. Brrr.

Actually, they didn't. Dissection was illegal. Everybody copied and recopied the philosopher Galen, died ~~ 200 CE. That's the reason that the drawings look so bad: the only time an artist saw the inside of human corpses was when decayed bodies were being moved from one graveyard to another. Anatomy classes were done by reading aloud from Galen while barber-surgeons dissected dead animals. It was a big drat deal when people started doing detailed dissections, and recording the results, in the Renaissance. All hail Vesalius. Vesalius was the guy who realized that Galen hadn't been allowed to dissect humans, either; he'd dissected Barbary macaques, which Galen thought were as close to humans as he could find.
