As loathe as I am to admit the system I grew up with and am used to might not be the best one, it does seem to make more sense to use the system that is essentially "on a scale of 0-100, how hot is it right now?" where going off the scale means whoa that's really hot/cold!

In an active voice construction, "need" requires the infinitive: "I need to wash the car" is possible, but "I need washing the car" is not.

In the passive construction, "need" can take both the infinitive and gerund forms: "The car needs to be washed" or "The car needs washing". So far as I'm aware both forms are universal. However, the gerund form normally relates to personal actions and as such cannot really be used with stative verbs: "Your password needs to be 8 characters in length" works, but "Your password needs being 8 characters in length" doesn't.

I'm not familiar with the past participle being used in connection with need ("The car needs washed") but it would have to be a highly irregular construction (the past participle normally follows auxiliary verbs, not main verbs), so it would have to be a very regional variation if anything.

"Needs done" is a US regional thing, dunno which region(s) but it's not that unusual.

I have failed for years to understand what stock is, so I'll just chalk this up to those crazy Redditors bankrupting a bunch of Wall Street lunatics with their own Reddit lunacy.

A bunch of Wall Street guys bet that the stock would go down because no one wanted it, Redditors bought a lot of it to make it go up instead so the investors would lose a ton of money on their failed bet.

Mister Speaker posted:

I think 'stan' is kind of a fascinating example of the evolution of slang. Sure, we know that 'fan' comes from 'fanatical' and on the surface that kind of makes 'stan' seem dumb and superfluous. But there's more context at play if you listen to the namesake song, that to my mind explains why someone would adopt the term to express a particular degree of unhealthy obsession that synonyms or adverbs either don't accurately convey, or aren't concise enough. Brevity, innit.

That's only taking it halfway! It started out as you say, but as is the case with a lot of slang it's softened now to not have the negative connotation and basically just means devoted fan (or not be meant to have one, obviously a lot of people still see it as a bad thing). I think that where it's really interesting is in using it as a verb to express fandom as a behaviour. There isn't another word for stanning someone, "being a fan of" is too passive.

This is an extremely weird take, friend. Are you really not able to distinguish that wolf and oof have the same vowel sound and end consonant, making them have much closer sounds than most other random two words have? Like if you're going to complain that an almost rhyme is no rhyme at all then you may as well complain that the earth isn't a sphere since it isn't perfectly smooth.
