https://www.twitch.tv/gammaray_tv Apparently it's officially sanctioned by whoever owns the right to the movies so there's no risk of it getting cut off early. I haven't seen a lot of promotion for the marathon but even after watching a few of the movies I thought it was worth sharing. I forgot just how fun and downright weird this genre was. That said, I haven't seen that many Shaw Brothers films, are there any standouts that I should make an effort to watch during this? Here's the listing of the schedule so I can pretend that I didn't put the least amount of effort possible into this post: Times in PST code:

This loving rules. My day just got so much better. Shame about the lack of subtitles. Just saw a dude with a whip stop a guy with a spear by wrapping up the attacker's waist with the whip. He was then thrown into the air, where another person with a whip snapped it, cutting the spear dude's leg off mid-air.

Cannon_Fodder posted:This loving rules. All the movies in this stream I've seen up until now had those shoddy dubbing jobs that are kind of endemic (and endearing) for kung-fu movies, this is the first one where you had to enable closed captions in the twitch player. This movie made me think to myself how much it would suck to do fight choreography with someone that has a whip. They've been pretty smart about making cuts around showing actual weapon impacts, but I feel like there's a danger of doing some real damage if someone's swinging a whip at you. More than with a blunted weapon, at least.

The endings are some pure gold in how jarring they feel. It feels like the time between resolving the main plot of the movie and the words "THE END" popping up on the screen is less than 30 seconds from when the bad guy's dead body hits the ground. The ending to The Shadow Whip was probably the longest resolution of the marathon so far, probably because they had those horses and they sure as gently caress were going to use them.

I tuned into the stream for 5 minutes and saw a guy inspecting babies on a conveyor belt and ordering the small brained babies to be disposed of. The babies were then tossed into a pit of fire. The guy then ordered his army to gather 300 more babies.

Top-tier Shaw Bros includes: - all of the three 36th Chamber movies, especially the first - Five Deadly Venoms - Crippled Avengers - Legendary Weapons of China A lot of Shaw stuff is on Netflix right now. I watched Legendary Weapons the other night, within like five minutes a dude uses spiritual boxing to make a henchman rip his own dick off.

The fight with the rings near the end of crippled avengers is one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen on film.

Holy poo poo, the ending to Descendant of the Sun is just nuts. 1. Bad guy blows up 2. freeze frame mid explosion 3. roll credits The whole movie was just nuts, it kinda rules

Descendant Of The Sun just finished up and holy poo poo, I don't think it's possible to top what just happened. It stepped on the pedal from the start and didn't let up for the duration of the entire movie. Superman, Jesus, Dragonball energy battles, 80s era sci-fi effects EVERYWHERE. It replays twice tomorrow and if you missed it, watch that poo poo, it owns. Also, another A+ ending to the movie.

Lawrence Gilchrist posted:Is there any other way to watch the lesser known ones Might want to check on prime/netflix/hulu but afaik though those collections aren't comprehensive. There's always torrents I guess? Golden Swallow was OK, people were really cavalier about getting killed and dying horribly which was kind of . It was surprising that the movie had a character with some nuance and wasn't a clear cut good or bad guy. Well, apart from the scores of comically evil bad guys that comes stock in a wuxia films. Because of this, I rate THE END a C-. Far too much resolution to the plot than what I've come to expect and love.

The hint was kind of in the title "One-Armed Swordsman" but him losing his arm by falling for a fast one while he's having a fist fight with a fellow student still took me by surprise.

I watched "The Return of One Armed Swordsman" on this last night. For some reason it was the one entry in this whole list which has neither dubs nor subs, so it was purely foreign language. Having no idea how to follow the film, the twitch chat reacted by spontaneously forming a live, one thousand mind riff track. It was incredibly amusing. I was literally laughing out loud in a room by myself. 10/10 will return tonight.
