I think that Midsommer being a bit predictable seemed more jarring than it would've been otherwise because Hereditary was just such the opposite of that. Very few movies have kept me on my toes like Hereditary did so it was surprising to see Midsommar and basically be able to predict the final scene within ten minutes.

Two episodes into Hunters and it is pretty wild. It looks great; it has a graphic novel feel to it. It's got some brutal scenes - the first 5 minutes of episode 1 and the later scene of a human chess match in a concentration camp especially. I'm really enjoying it andi it's great to see Lena Olin and Carol Kane work.

One thing I'm not sure of, was America's deals with Nazis really much if a secret in the70s? I've seen lots of references about it in various stuff from the 50s and 60s over the years and there seems a general knowledge that it was a big reason skiing and ski slopes boomed so much in post war America.

Yeah, it's got subtitles, so won't work as a workout movie, but K. Waste is right, it's very good. One of my top movies of last year. Worth making time for to watch normally.

Weird. I do a lot of anime watching when working out specifically because they're subtitled. Can't zone out, surf forums/twitter when running/elliptical. Helps pass the time too.

If I’m on my spin bike I’ll watch whatever but if I’m lifting I end up changing positions at times on the bench and I’m not always facing the screen. Lately for lifting I’ll put on a Jon Oliver last week tonight episode because they’re great and don’t require you to be locked onto the screen to enjoy it. VVVVVV 👍🏻👍🏻 I’ll check it out beanieson fucked around with this message at 23:26 on Feb 23, 2020 |

I finished Hunters. End/plot spoilers: The beginning of the show was exploitative and tasteless at times. The Nazis are terrible, and it's good to show that, but it's not good to use the Holocaust as an excuse to write and film torture porn scenes akin to Saw. Thankfully, these all are mostly contained to the first two episodes and the rest of the series is 70s style Nazi hunting. The show doesn't even pretend it's not trying to be based on a graphic novel you'd swear had to exist, with constant comparisons to superheroes... while also pointing out those superheroes acted very differently in that age of comics. Batman hung a dude to death from a plane, for example. The "we're not monsters like them!" got tiring and only made sense with the final twist. There weren't many surprises I didn't see coming, and that was one of them. I knew right away there was no chance Al Pacino was going to make acting in this show his full time job, so I looked for the first clue that he was going to make an exit and followed it to the natural conclusion. The show probably needed star power to get interest. I liked the old couple and hope Carol Kane comes back, but she probably won't. I hated the Cleaner character, whatever his name was. Even for his type of character, that was some lazy writing, and I don't want to watch a second season if he's going to be a main villain. I'd have been happy with a self-contained series, but now I want to see them murder Hitler in season 2.

LifeLynx posted:I finished Hunters. End/plot spoilers: I had much of the same thoughts. I was really uncomfortable during the torture scenes, not because making Nazis out to be monsters is bad, but by putting them in this sometimes silly comic book style show made them seem more tasteless? The human chess scene was really hosed up even if you don't really see anything. It's so over the top it comes across as comical and it really shouldn't. I am aware that real nazis probably did poo poo like that and worse, but it's all in how you frame it you know? The ending revelations both worked and fell flat for me That Al Pacino was a secret nazi I kinda saw coming, especially after he shot that lady who started saying poo poo that could have outed him. It was funny, in the first episode I was wondering if anybody online had complained about his performance because he seemed to be going really broad with his portrayal, it was nearly a racist parody of a stereotypical jew that exists in racists heads and it was when the reveal happened you realized that wasn't Pacino going broad, it was the Wolf. Because he's a loving nazi. Hitler being alive is just comical I also had trouble with how supervillainous the nazis were. Not because I thought in unfair on the fuckers, but because it gave them a grandeur and competence I really didn't think was warranted. Real Nazis are awful, they also lost badly because they had no hope of winning the fight they picked and got stomped in the end. Saying, "Ah, they are back and are super threatening with their secret plan for the fourth Reich!" was silly. I preferred hunting solitary nazis trying to hide, rather than uncovering a conspiracy, that wasn't really a conspiracy. I guess Operation: Paperclip wasn't common knowledge in the '70s?

I don't know if it was common knowledge, but it probably wasn't what we think of as "common knowledge" in the Internet age. I liked the conspiracy because Nazi of the Week would have gotten boring, but the again so was every Nazi being killed before they could talk in the first half. I think it would have been much smarter to have the young American cleaner guy be proto-alt-right instead of just another Nazi. Show that even though the Hunters can get revenge on WWII Nazis, it's just that: revenge. The war against Nazi ideology will live longer than any of them. They sort of did that with the prison scene, but tacking it onto the end doesn't earn them points.

Honey Boy is pretty great. I've always liked Shia for whatever reason and I remember first hearing about this movie and everyone being all "lol what" and being kind of dismissive, but he pulled it off in the end. Lucas Hedges was fine I guess, but I was a lot more impressed with Noah Jupe. And Shia too obviously, specifically the scene in his AA meeting where he's talking about his past. That dude can be real good. Anyway, this was good poo poo and it's only an hour and half.

Watched the first episode of Hunters and it grabbed me, so looking forward to more. We're also (binge)watching the Shield. Start of season 3 I found it to dip a bit and we even got a bit bored, but it picked up very well. Into season 4 now, still good, curious where it goes. Sometimes I can't shake the feeling that the story is very well done and then suddenly ultra dark / shocking in small side bits and that those come from Sutter's hand. Some just feel comically shocking, making otherwise fantastic episodes uneven.

Well that was creepy. I googled to see where it was streaming, no free results but Netflix wasn’t on the list, so I open the Netflix app to check, and the page for the movie is already open...can’t figure out if they are promoting it cause it just went up, and that was a coincidence, or if Netflix is tapping into my google searches.

I see that Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires is up on Prime. PotV is one of two movies rumored to have been cribbed by Ridley Scott when he was coming up with Alien[1]. It's worth a watch if you are a fan of xenomorphs. You might see some familiar plot elements and maybe even a set piece or two. [1] The other move being Queen of Blood.
