The first seasonseries of Fleabag is pretty great TV. I love the fourth wall play, and the problems are earnest and immediate, while also being humorous and sort of silly. I'm about to move on to the second series, looking forward to it!

:same: Truly unbelievable television. I've grown so disillusioned with the current state of dramatic TV, and comedy practically doesn’t exist anymore. Great starts have stopped following through, and the need to make more when a show is successful tends to ruin what begins strongly. Fleabag is twelve perfect episodes. I want more but I'm delighted I can’t have any.

Yeah, I know what you mean. "trying too hard" is a good take, maybe that's what I don't like. Technically, all of its pieces are great: A story about MLM, set in the early 90s, Kirsten Dunst, Florida, takedown of the american dream etc. But somehow it doesn't work out. For me, the pacing is too slow. Some funny scenes, but maybe too much time devoted to side characters. Dunno. Also lol at Beth Ditto, didn't know.
It relies a little too much on Dunst's charm and her character's "gritty mom" determination to carry the show. It also seems as if it's being written as they're shooting, since it meanders thematically and has all these plot cul-de-sacs that just throw goofy obstacles in front of her. The showrunners obviously hitched on the popular elements -- cult, 80s nostalgia, dark comedies - and tried to throw together a representative cast. It lacks something serious to say, doesn't commit enough to the dark part of the comedy and can't hide its cards enough to be surprising.

I really wanted it to work. I love Kirsten Dunst, was really interested in them fleshing out Buffalo Bill's character, but it's too tedious to sit through the lukewarm monkeyshines.

I found The Irishman exhausting. Scorsese's needledrops are so tired, and his choices are so predictable. All the dialog is in this ridiculous code that almost seems improvised at this point, since all of these actors have hundreds of hours playing what’s essentially the same character. By far the best, freshest performance in the whole thing is Jim Norton's cameo as Don Rickles.

I hope this is his elegy to the romanticized mob and we can get over this love affair with sociopaths. Mob chic costuming, excess porn, the savvy working class quip by the ignoramus, piles of money, the no longer shocking brief brutality, dis is owah thing: okay, okay we get it.

The internet nerds in Don't gently caress with Cats reminded me of the nerds in Beyond the Curve (the Flat Earther doc). They were annoying, and it was sort of worse because at least with the flat earth people, you can feel okay hating them. These people are doing something sort of noble, although it's icky to be so consumed with an internet chase and hand-wringing over choosing to watch awful videos.

I was sort of impressed with Luka's "catfishing" skills. When internet detectives on Reddit/SA get on the trail of someone, there are generally so many breadcrumbs that someone gets incontrovertibly doxxed immediately. He left clever clues -- only liking the one video with a sockpuppet account, for example. That also didn't seem consistent with who he was, at all. But then again, I never thought the people on the fishing end of Catfish or the series seemed particularly brainy or tech savvy. They're just careful at concealing their tracks in a way I would think would be more difficult to pull off. He left it amorphous enough that a full time team of doxx nerds couldn't nail him down with enough certainty for anyone to act on until he made a snuff film.

As for the police, I'm on the fence. Yes, deliberate animal cruelty is a sign of pretty serious mental illness. But kittens are put to death every day in shelters, but in what we deem a humane way. The crime we're all mad about is scalding people's brains with his sickness, really. I have a hard time feeling it's worth the cops' time to chase down a few dead kittens, as callous as that is to say.

I'm not saying it's okay, I'm conflicted as to whether it's pragmatic for the police to get involved.

While One Missed Call is nominally a horror film, it's actually a dark satire of horror and is very good
if you happen to read this post, be sure you get the whole "Takahashi Miike" context. Don't see the 2008 one, it's terrible.

Bad Trip was super hilarious. The narrative stuff is whatever but all the pranks had me cackling like a kid.

It's a truly amazing piece of filmmaking. I am not a sentimental man. But when Trina tells the crowd they better pray for Chris, and that wonderful woman starts praying, I choked up a little.

The greatest part about it is the funniest lines and the biggest heroes aren't the actors

edit: on closer inspection, there's a bit of what I feel is "ADR cheating". Some of the really raunchy punchlines are cleverly thrown in afterward. It punches up the comedy, for sure, but this embellishes how brave the actors are being. I don't want to take anything from their incredibly daring performances, but it's an editing choice I'm ambivalent about.

I'd never have pegged Lil' Rey Howery as a top-tier straight man, but boy is he incredible.
