My prime cartoon watching years were 1981-1985, and pretty much everything I gravitated toward at the time ended up obscure and forgotten. I feel like I unintentionally lived some alternate hipster childhood because while every other person my age has shared memories of Masters of the Universe or G.I. Joe, I was watching poo poo like this and wondering why they stopped making it. Full episodes are out there for a lot of these, if anyone cares to see more than the intros.

Wheelie and the Chopper Bunch

This one first aired in 1974 but they were running it in the early 80s. It was my favorite, a cartoon about cars. The theme music owns.

I know what you did last summer, and frankly I am displeased.
Invasion America was a cool sci-fi miniseries that aired on the WB in 1998. It was about a teenager who finds out his dad was an alien exile who was involved in a war on his home planet because they wanted to invade earth.

I remember it being cool anyway. I was a kid. Maybe it sucked. I looked it up and it turns out it was a Dreamworks project. And apparently you can watch it on youtube. Here's the first episode:

Rupert is a very intelligent and witty white bear, and he has many friends from every corner of the world. Although he lives in a small medieval origins village called Nutwood, he enjoys traveling around the world, discovering new cultures, living great adventures, unraveling mysteries and unmasking villains. The Nordic culture of the European countries influences the visual of the cartoon, with many castles, citadels and clothes, besides personages, like elves and the monster of Loch Ness, that they refer to the European culture. The landscapes of Rupert's books, which inspired the series, were based in the region of Snowdonia and Vale of Clwyd, in the northern part of Wales.

Pretty sure it was a pilot or teased a follow up series that never got made.
It was also kind of a weird proposition as it was not strictly for kids, but the chances an adult would grab onto it like the X files was slim.

The World of David the Gnome

Aired: 1987-1996
Seasons: 2
Network: Nickelodeon

quote:

The series presents the gnomes as a kind species, of 15 centimeters (6 inches) of height, and between 250 and 300 grams (8 and 10 ounces) of weight depending on gnome body mass. According to their habitat, different types of gnomes are distinguished: the ones of the forest, the ones of the garden, the ones of the farm, the ones of the house, the ones of the dunes, those of Siberia, and nomadic "gypsy" gnomes (commonly looked down upon by other gnomes). A gnome's lifespan is usually 400 years, though there is one example of a couple in the Balkans living 550 years.

Gnomes such as the main characters live in pairs in comfortable caves or holes under trees (in their case in the company of a pair of mice and a cricket). Their diet is mostly vegetarian. They are helped by the animals of the forest when traveling long distances or when they need to arrive quickly at a specific location. Gnomes work in various ways to repair the damage inevitably caused by humans. They also have the power of telepathy and mind control.

Their main enemies are the trolls, malevolent and clumsy creatures who always make trouble for the other inhabitants of the forest, as well as gnome poachers.

1 Episode.

The pilot aired on Fox Kids as a special on February 22, 1992. It featured the vocal talents of Whoopi Goldberg and Tim Curry. Originally the villain was voiced by Christopher Walken, but he was replaced at the last minute because the producers wanted somebody who sounded "more cartooney".

It was never picked up by a network, but somehow had a comic book series and a video game.

UNNECESSARY LINE BREAK
https://youtu.be/5DYItEA4b3c Macron 1. It was another Robotech like thing where they smooshed some anime together and called it a day. In this case Srungle and Goshogun. The latter of which being cooler because that robot kicks rear end. The theme song is either so bad it's good or just bad.

It was on this tiny station that also had Defenders of the Earth which is a bit more well known.

https://youtu.be/ls2lvNYrZVI Inhumanoids. Mix Journey to the Center of the Earth with Chthulhu and give our scientist heroes power armor. Awesome happens.

I could also say some of the 80s Nickelodeon cartoons too? Little Prince, Mysterious Cities of Gold, Belle and Sebastian, and that one that was a tad like Ulysses 31 but with Center of the Earth kinda poo poo and these singing pirates. (Count Duckula is maybe just well known enough to not be counted but it's also way less anime than anything else in this post.)

Dammit Hasbro bring Inhumanoids back. Put em in a modern age DnD variant or something. It would be like CthulhuTech without all the rape.

I don't know how "obscure" this is, but I loved it. The Trap Door. The adventures of a big blue thing, his posh talking skull friend, and a spider who work for an unseen fat monster in a castle. They hang around a trap door, beneath which are all manner of nasties. Very cute and fun claymation.

And this one is definitely not obscure for people of a certain age, but I am posting it because this theme song needs to be in more peoples heads.

Lipstick Apathy
Jana of the Jungle. (1978)

'Jana is essentially a female version of Tarzan who traveled to the rain forests of South America in search of her lost father. Her father vanished in a boating accident when she was still a child, but the introduction shows that he survived. She has long blonde hair, wears a dress made of unspecified animal skin and a necklace which doubles as a throwable weapon and makes a high-pitched resonating sound when thrown'

It was crap but Jana served to define for me what ladies should be like -

Plot of episode #1
'A military plane crashes in the jungle and its cargo, a powerful bomb, falls into the hands of an isolated tribe. Jana must deal with the both the bomb, which is counting down, and an active volcano.'

Hopefully she dealt with the volcano via blocking it up by throwing incels into it.
