You've left out so much stuff. I skimmed through some shows on YouTube looking for Botchamania clips and witnessed: Austin and Rock rip-offs, Howard Stern whack packers, morbidly obese hillbillies, someone powerbombed onto a flaming table that didn't break.

Its quite a bit to unpack, yeah. I've just about got them organized so I can start planning psp-tv showings and writeups. My ambition says I oughta try podcasting because I bet it'd be interesting to track down some of the folks involved and ask them what the gently caress was going on.

I actually feel like WEW is probably a pretty meaningful historical marker for how far women's wrestling has come in America and how BAD things were pre-SHIMMER.

Also somehow its website is still standing. I actually think it got updated.

There used to be, back when there were Ren Faires, an old ren faire carnie tradition of doing the fight shows buzzed and mostly nude after the faire had closed with an audience of friends and fellow carnies lit only be car headlights. I imagine a similar energy will fill this wrestling show.

I'm watching some MLW and some random thoughts...

Within 2 segments of an episode I saw Tom Lawler evade his enemy by getting on a subway car and taunting him through the window and Mance Warner turn an enemy face by offering him a Natty Light and bonding over "MJF is an rear end in a top hat." I was uncommitted to this binge until this moment.

MJF is such an effective heel that not only do people just turn face because they all mutually hate him but he has a whole stable of mediocre heels who just like leech off his heat while he's not even there. Its kind of remarkable. Its like those birds or fish that hang out around larger animals to eat their scraps or bugs. Everyone in the Dynasty underwhelms the hell out of me but like they all vaguely have the shadow of MJF near them and sometimes he actually shows up so I sorta care.

Contra Unit kind of rule. Well, Jacob Fatu and Josef Samael rule. But that's basically what Contra Unit is. Fatu killing people and Samael yelling about mercenary stuff and burning stuff. And it works for me. Its funny that Simon Gotch is just... irrelevant when he brought them in as his stable. Its the right decision but its funny.

Jordan Oliver is the most annoying motherfucker ever and I can't decide if I hate or love him. I just want to see him killed over and over again by everyone in MLW and MLW actually seems to be doing a good job not having that happen so I just want it more and more. God he's annoying.

Jimmy Havoc is boring and lame and Priscilla Kelly is wasted with him.

I like Davey Boy Smith Jr, but he sure does cut terrible stilted yelling promos.

I'm amused that they wrote Teddy Hart out by just having Contra Unit set him on fire and then having the Hart Foundation be like "yeah, he's dead, we've moved on and are now family with the Von Erichs."

I miss Salina de la Renta.

I wonder if it bothers Low Ki that he's in a company with a dude names "Zenshi" who I'm pretty sure is cosplaying a video game.

MLW has too many championships and makes me not love AEW introducing another one more.

MJF said Savio Vega reminded him of "Kwing" but "old, ugly, disheveled, and if he was Puerto Rican for some reason." MJF is amazing and these episodes are gonna be sad when he's gone for good. He's at least 25% of why I'm watching.

Is Salina gone from MLW or is she just not managing anyone at the moment? I always enjoyed her when she was giving what felt like more improv'd backstage promos rather than heavily scripted in-ring ones.

I get the sense she's gone. She's not on the roster page, the last time I saw her on tv was like sometime in 2019 when she was unsuccessfully trying to recruit someone, and La Parka just showed up (I'm at Ep100/March) and declared himself a free agent. Its sad. She was one of the highlights for me and I always liked the idea of a classic old school heel promoter manager done for a woman. And I think she was good at it. And I half joke that Zelina Vega's kind of a ripoff/inspired by thing.

Wow, Bix. First K.Rool, then Steve and now SEPHIROTH? Your dream game is real!
Did the MLW TV shows get better last year?

There was a point where I gave up on them completely because they went from "delightfully digestible show of indie guys changing things up by doing fun TV-length matches" to "boring slog where fun indies guys were being misused in TV-length matches." And I could not figure out why. One night early last year, I remember getting up to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and walking through the living room to find my roommate as he watched MLW reruns, and listening to his shock at how bad and boring the shows had gotten.

Yeah I’m curious about this too. I went from enjoying watching it every week and seeing fun little tv matches to just being more and more bored every match. The thing is too I generally like almost all
The talent they have. I see them work at all these other places and they’re really fun, but in MLW I just can’t stay focused at all.

MLW was a huge energy suck. They had a pretty good run helped by Schiavone on commentary but it went downhill quickly. Storylines somehow felt thrown together and never ending at the same time and most of the matches were just so bland.

The only saving grace at the end of my time watching it was Contra Unit wrecking house and Fatu moonsaulting onto someone on a stretcher and diving off of the top of a cage.

The most recent shows with AAA had decent matches. Mostly because it was AAA talent mixed in MLW wrestlers doing lucha indie stuff.

But yeah there's just not much there to draw. Losing out on Rush and Dragon Lee certainly hurt. They were planning on running LA Park vs Rush at last year's WM weekend shows till Rush signed with ROH

I'm mostly enjoying what I'm watching. Its not great or anything but nothing really drags and there's good matches that catch my attention. I dunno. There's not much excitement or compelling acts and its mostly filling the role of something to turn on when I'm doing stuff. But I think its probably a bit better than when I lost interest in it during Lawlor's face run.

I guess right now to me it feels a little less like "a bunch of big indie guys going through the motions" and more of MLW specific guys. The Von Erichs, Lawlor, Dynasty, Injustice, Pillman, DBS, Fatu, Erik Stevens. They're not the best talent in the world or anything but it feels a bit more like its own place to me.

MLW was probably hurt the most by the great talent spending spree of 2019, when AEW launched and ROH finally opened up the checkbook (along with WWE still vacuuming up whatever they could). That's around the point where they pivoted away from "dream match" style booking, since it made more sense to build around the guys they already had, rather than get into bidding wars they had no shot at winning.

MLW Binge Update...

I really liked Tom Lawler when he was a heel doing the Team Filthy thing. Then he won the Battle Riot, I was pumped, he turned face, and he had a long, boring, dragged out run to the title and a real bad set of matches with Low Ki for the belt and that's basically when I stopped watching. I picked back up after he had dropped the belt and pretty much right as he turned heel again and reformed Team Filthy. I'm kind of digging him again. The Team Filthy isn't terribly interesting. Erick Stevens seems ok but the other two guys are very forgettable to the point where I don't remember their names. Kit Osbourne? Dominic Guer... something? But Lawler's act seems to work bets when he's being a scumbag with a bunch of lackies. He's a solid mid level heel behind Fatu at the top and I'm kind of buying into the Von Erichs, DBS Jr, and Killer Kross mass face team up against them. But I've always kind of been a sucker for that kind of "faces come together out of their mutual hatred of the heel stable" thing.

Oooh, King Mo just joined Team Filthy. Mo ain't good but he adds something and I was kind of hoping that would happen. He works as another muscled flunky for Lawler and brings with him Low Ki as another pissed off face. And I'll always be a Low Ki mark even if I expect that match to suck when it happens/happened.

Starting to kind of dig Injustice. Oliver is just so annoying but its clearly a known thing and the purpose. Kotto Brazil never impressed me but he's basically just a poo poo stirrer who can wrestle so it works. Myron Reed didn't really impress me when he was Rich Swann's lacky when this started. I missed how he got in charge and the other two guys showed up. I assume Swann went exclusive to TNA. But I'm getting sold on him. He's a pretty good wrestler, he's been beating a steady stream of AAA guys and high flyers I'm vaguely familiar with and kind of working with the heel flunkies and the old "protective" bullet proof vest gimmick. Its a lot of noise but its working for me.

They're setting Brian Pillman Jr up as the guy who will take the Middleweight title from him and I'm curious baout that. I don't know what I think of Pillman. He's talented but green. I think he's better than he was a year ago. I wonder if his name hurts or helps him. If he was just some guy would there be lower expectations and he'd just be some rookie improving, or would he be some nobody who got discarded because he wasn't the spitting image of his iconic dad? MLW's kind of building him up well with him getting like midlevel wins and then big opportunities and matches but then falling just short in them. Its kind of similar to the AEW/Darby Allin thing where like its selling hard that he's a star in the making but not quite there yet and having to fight his way up. Winning the Middleweight belt will obviously be the big stepping stone but its being built up well and very naturally. Its another thing working for me.

So yeah, I'm gonna say MLW has rebounded a bit. I wouldn't say its must see or on the level of AEW pre-quarantine but there's a lot of parts kind of working for me. Of course I don't know what the state of things are now in the quarantine as I'm still watching shows from March.

its like

Jacob Fatu at the top killing fuckers as a dominant constantly defending champ.
Team Filthy vs the assembled faces with DBS Jr seeming to be built up as the guy who is gonna challenge Fatu seriously.
MJF less Dynasty vs Mance Warner. Dynasty still underwhelm me but Warner is a perfect foil and helps sell them
Myron Reed and Injustice taking down mIddleweights with "Rookie of the Year" Pillman having to cut weight to challenge.

Not really half bad. A solid little lineup of stuff.

Would MLW appeal to you more if I told you they have a LA Park cooking show segment?
