I almost wish they had put some of the actors in old person makeup. Their casting of old and young versions of a character is done very well most of the time but requires you to pay attention at all times and have a good faces memory, a lot of times they don't even bother to drop their name in a conversation. Old Magnus and Franziska for instance, I instantly knew it was him by the resemblance but I then just assume it was her as nothing was done to identify her.

I'm rewatching both seasons in anticipation and good god this show is great and it seems so so clear that they wrote everything out before starting because of how tight everything is. Martha's lines as Ariadne in an early s1 episode initially seem like they could be a reference to the red thread that Jonas is currently following into a labyrinth, plus her feelings about Mikkel vanishing, but her lines talk A LOT about things that seem like they're references to the new Martha that shows up at the end of s2. I really hope s3 sticks the landing.

For some reason Netflix started me off with the second episode. Imagine how confused I was. Good thing I noticed and went back to the first episode. Awesome show. I'm recommending it all over the place but "complicated German-language time travel drama" is kind of hard to sell people on.

I'm gonna watch both seasons for the fourth time! Maybe I'll be able to remember who the hell anyone is without having to check that (very cool) Netflix guide every five minutes this time! I love the absolute poo poo out of this show and by god if they stick the landing on S3 it will be cemented as my favourite TV show ever, but drat, is it ever A Proposition to try and keep track of what would already be a medium to large TV show cast even without all of their ancestors, their offspring, and their occasional time travel antics. But at the same time you've really gotta respect how good a job they've done casting all of this, finding actors who can carry all this stuff while also believably looking like eachothers' parents, siblings, children, surprise past selves or I guess alternate universe selves now, oh god this is only gonna get more confusing- I will laugh for four continuous minutes if eyepatch cop turns out to just be like an ordinary dude who had an unfortunate but mundane accident.

Regarding the trailer: I wonder if the "two sides" competing to control time are actually the two different universes? It's definitely not been made clear yet what the two sides are and who is on them.

I'm 100% okay with the looping series of events with no origin (Jonas gave himself the directions to the cave passage which Jonas never would have found if Jonas hadn't given himself the directions to the cave passage). My brain was able hand-wave away a nuclear power plant somehow accidentally creating Dark Matter/Higgs Boson/Whatever the gently caress, but my biological knowledge cannot figure out how Charlotte giving birth to her own mother would work genetics-wise.

Seems fairly simple to me. Elisabeth and Noah grow up and have Charlotte. She's sent back in time and raised by HG Tannhaus. Charlotte grows up, marries Peter and has Elisabeth. Elisabeth and Noah grow up and have Charlotte. Though yeah every so often I can accept a bunch of similar paradoxes and then one just makes my head start screeching for a second.

All the other loops my brain can deal with because they basically don't have any distinct iterations. There is one loop that has no clear beginning where causes lead to a series of consequences that themselves are the triggers for the causes that lead to the consequences. Real simple. Younger versions to Jonas seem to believe that THIS TIME when they go through the loop they'll change things while failing to understand that there is no THIS TIME, there's only one time and no way to change that (Adam seems to get this). BUT for Charlotte/Elizabeth genetic information is passed from one to the other, which gets really messy since essentially you have a giant ball of inbreeding which should lead to all kinds of problems. I'm having trouble explaining this, but lets take a step back and follow just Jonas, older Jonas, and Adam. Each remembers past conversations they had with their elder versions and chooses to repeat those conversations when they speak to their younger versions. Nothing is changing, the information they are passing to their younger self only pushes their younger selves to carry out what the elder already knows happens. BUT genes passed from mother to daughter WILL change things if those genes are going to travel through time and pass back to the mom again. Elizabeth basically has half her DNA from her dad and half from her mom. Elizabeth's daughter (Charlotte) will thus have half her DNA from Noah and half from her mom, which will be half of Charlotte's own DNA and half from Elizabeth's dad. Okay, so now Charlotte has 1/4 of the DNA of the man that will become her husband (because he is also her grandfather!), she has Elizabeth who now has 3/4 of the DNA of her father (half from her father, 25% from Charlotte). Now Elizabeth has Charlotte and Charlotte has the DNA of......Do you see where I'm going here?

Wild speculation based on things shown in the trailer - Everything's inverted in the alternate world: alt-Marta has the role of Jonas in the main timeline, trying to save her doomed lover alt-Jonas, alt-Claudia has the role of Adam since we see her in her own version of the church bunker - Bartoz leads a coup against Adam and torches the church bunker, along with Magnus and Franziska, possibly to join alt-Claudia? - Some event spawned both timelines and must be prevented in order to prevent the apocalypse, but doing so will destroy one of the timelines, "killing" everyone in it.

It's reassuring to see people on their third and fourth viewing still having a time working things out, I'm on my second and a lot of the time it feels like I'm watching it for the first time again. I forgot how dense this show is. So much stuff I've forgotten and am having to rework out in my brain. But at least this time I'm doing a better job at recognizing who's who and who is connected to who. Not 100%, but better than my first viewing. I'm reminded of and love how subtle and natural the acting is across the board. Really sells everything wonderfully.

Rewatching Season 1 can someone explain the timeline of Eriks body to me? He’s kidnapped in 2019, taken through the caves to 1986 where he’s strapped into the time chair and sent *somewhere* and then 1986 Helge drags his corpse through the caves to 1953. We see him drag some corpse out of the cave anyway and i don’t know who else it could be. So can it be assumed that that *somewhere* is 2019 and he was dumped by the time chair in the abandoned bunker like Mads was? Edit: ok looking at the Netflix site it says that Erik is sent by the chair directly to 1953. So who is the body that Helge is seen dragging out of the caves? Edit: unless he wasn’t dragging it out of the caves but out of the bunker. So that was 1953. Ughh this show Edit again: yeah I just got to the scene where Noah is scrubbing the blood off the bunker floor and writing down the date on the wall in 1953 I forgot about that. It just means that Elizabeth shares 75% of her DNA with Noah, which probably shouldn't really work out too well for her, but I guess she lucked out. I think it works but my brain isn't good at recursion, so I could be easily missing something.

I think it works but my brain isn't good at recursion, so I could be easily missing something. (I just want to preface this by saying that I LOVE this show, and that I'm just trying to explain why this particular paradox is breaking my brain more than the others) So I finally thought about a way to describe why I'm having a problem with the mother/daughter thing. I want you to think of Michael's letter to Jonas. Michael writes the letter the day he hangs himself. It ends up with Ines, who then gives it to a young Jonas. Young Jonas holds on to the letter, but at one point shows it to Michael the day before he hangs himself. Eventually an older version of Jonas (The Stranger) gives the letter to an even younger version of Jonas who burns the letter. The letter moves through time and inspires it's own creation, but the life of the letter is ultimately linear. It has a point at which it was written, it exists and then eventually is destroyed. It goes through the loop only once. The same is true of the cave map (made by young Mikkel, found by young Jonas, altered by The Stranger, kept by Jonas until it is stolen by Katharina). Okay, so now that I have you thinking about the movement of objects through time in the show, and have shown that objects have clear beginnings and endings, which while they may inspire their own creation (the letter, the time machine), do not themselves ever pass back through the same story twice. Now imagine the chromosomes in Charlotte and Elizabeth. Those are objects....but they have no clear beginning or ending. If you sit on one of those chromosomes and ride along with it you will find yourself moving from Charlotte to Elizabeth to Charlotte to Elizabeth to Charlotte.....forever. There is not clear place they came from nor is their an endpoint to their story. In fact, there are NO Charlotte or Elizabeth genes at all. They are entirely the genes of Noah and Peter Dopppler, except every iteration even more copies of those two men's chromosomes are added to the mix. An analog to this would be if Jonas gave his father the letter, which Michael then never wrote but simply left behind for Jonas to find. The letter would be moving continuously through time getting older and older and it wouldn't make any sense.

Anonymous Zebra posted:(I just want to preface this by saying that I LOVE this show, and that I'm just trying to explain why this particular paradox is breaking my brain more than the others) It's been a while since biology class, but I don't think it's a paradox. Your daughter would have to be a perfect clone of your mother, which is something that is theoretically possible without any time travel involvement. The probability of it is just infinitesimally small. (But you can always get around that problem in sci-fi by saying that we are observing a tiny part of the multiverse where the dice rolled just right.) To elaborate, Elizabeth and Charlotte always keep all of their maternal chromosomes and only switch out the paternal part between Noah and Peter each loop iteration. No gene exchange happens during cross over. Both of these things are astronomically unlikely but the chances are not zero either.
