It was a puppet but for any shots of ALF walking or running it was a short person in a costume.

The best possible way to reboot alf now is to have it be about the production of the tv show where this pupeteer, either by accident or on purpose, slowly causes an entire cast and crew to have emotional breakdown. That poo poo could be hilarious.

Weirdly enough there's a movie starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Janeane Garofalo and Elizabeth Hurley about exactly that. Hollywood writer Jerry Stahl wrote an autobiography called Permanent Midnight about his career (including working on ALF, Moonlighting, Northern Exposure and Twin Peaks) and the heroic amount of drugs that he needed to get by which got turned into a film. They had to change ALF into "Mr. Chompers" for copyright reasons.

Here's some outtakes from an Australian kids show that ran every night after school:

Edit: the guy that puppeteered Agro has also been trying to resurrect the character every way possible ever since the show was super popular back in the 80s/90s including guest hosting a local tonight show, hosting the dating show Perfect Match, doing guest appearances on a whole bunch of different shows and, weirdly enough, working in radio for years and years.
Edit 2: "Agro" is really obviously an old commercially available puppet of Animal for the Muppets with the excess hair shaved off and the fur died brown, I never picked that up when I was a kid.

isn't it weird that back in the eighties a family sitcom character could eat entire cats and still be considered okay but now people can't even watch a horror movie with a huge human bodycount if something happens to an animal.

Well, not a cat anyway. Dogs are fine. I believe horror films are geared at cat people in general; the kind of person who owns an animal that leaves corpses at the front door is the kind of person who enjoys horror.

I remember being sad that my mom’s bowling league night was the same night ALF was on, so I would watch it alone or sometimes with my older sister if she was home, then tell my mom about what happened in the episode the next day.

I also had an ALF lunchbox :3:

Ben Stiller really flexed his dramatic acting chops in it. It is good, but Alf isn't really that relevant.

It does explain why the show was so ridiculous though.

I couldn't take Ben Stiller seriously, but that made it kind of funny to watch. It felt like his transparent attempt at becoming a SERIOUS ACTOR so he overdid it a bit. Wasn't a terrible movie though.
