my wife had perfect vision up until around ten years ago when she basically started getting farsighted and nearsighted simultaneously, which just got so bad that she basically had to chooses which pair of glasses to wear at any given time and just resign herself to not being able to see the poo poo that was outside that range but then last year she got lens replacement surgery and her vision is back to being perfect, it was expensive but it was money very well spent

Bone Crimes posted:I think I'm going down this path pretty quickly, so I would like to know more about the process here, it cost about $6k and took a bunch of visits to measure eyeballs and whatnot. the surgeries for each eyeball were done about a week apart, and they did regular followup exams and eyedrops for months after. idk how common that is though; japan is super safety-conscious and we definitely got the impression that they were sort of performatively overdoing it the crazy thing is that the surgeries themselves were insanely fast - they'd give her a course of numbing eye drops and we'd sit there for 15-30 minutes while those kicked in, and then she'd go in for the surgery and be back out less than five minutes later. she said it was disconcerting to have your eyes wide open while someone was going all chien andalou on them but there was never any pain whatsoever recovery was fairly quick, with the only lingering thing being an increased amount of halos on bright lights at night (e.g., headlights). not enough to be a problem, though

Trig Discipline posted:oh i was there just about six weeks ago! oh yeah if you're looking to book a scuba trip there i can't recommend this guy highly enough https://www.vikingscubakabira.com/en/ very much a mom-and-pop operation so there's a good chance you'll have a boat to yourself. fyi the mantas don't seem to be around this year so if you go out expecting to see them you'll probably be disappointed. stunning dives anyway though, and just great service. there's also a cultural park with a monkey enclosure where you can just sorta go in and chill with a large extended family of spider monkeys. they are absolutely adorable and have zero fear of people also the big shisa park is really great if you want to have the sneaking suspicion that you've wandered into someone else's acid trip Trig Discipline fucked around with this message at 00:54 on Sep 19, 2022 |

Stringent posted:that all looks great. the snorkeling is absolutely great as well, when the weather permits. like the rest of this part of the world it rains a lot, but wind is really the important thing - strong winds offshore cause currents, which are the real thing to worry about around here. not a problem at some sites, huge problem at others, but presumably if your friend is close to DM he can figure out where rips are likely and avoid those places if the waves are up idk if you know this but ishigaki is also home to some of the best beef in japan, so you absolutely should do some yakiniku if you're a carnivore. there are also touristy places that make burgers etc. out of it as a gimmick but that is an utter waste and actually the fat content is too high to even make a good burger

oh my, you have a real treat ahead of you then. there's some more info about it here: https://www.japan-experience.com/plan-your-trip/to-know/japanese-food/ishigaki-beef just fyi this is the way japanese people mostly eat it: it is very high in fat so it's basically impossible to overcook, but that means that it's also a bit much for an actual steak-sized slice of meat. the yakiniku procedure is to put mouth-sized bits of meat on the fire, cook them until they're brown, and then just salt or sauce them and put them immediately in your face-hole you can eat yakiniku pretty affordably but they always try to sell you on some special "set" of ultra expensive meat which, in my experience, is never worth it do be aware that they eat a lot of bits of the animal here that many westerners (including me) are not all that keen on - intestine, tongue, etc. most places have an english menu so you can avoid any mistakes, but sometimes they don't list the individual cuts of meat in those "set" selections Trig Discipline fucked around with this message at 04:12 on Sep 19, 2022 |

also if you dive keep your prescription so you can get prescription scuba masks, they rule in fact one of the main things pushing my wife over the edge to get robot eyes was that we could no longer find a prescription scuba mask that would work for her and she didn't want to dive with three masks she was constantly switching out so that she could see stuff
