The dark subtext is the greed in the heart of man that would lead to crooks who dress up as monsters

There was that one guy who technically hadn't broken any laws since dressing up as a monster and spooking kids on your own property isn't a crime. That man wasn't evil he was just a sexual deviant.

the paint thing is a rumor but i think the official explanation is that the studio wanted some way to distinguish “old” scooby doo from “new” scooby doo. daphne got a much wilder redesign for her 80s show, iirc

if you are watching as a modern viewer, red shirt shaggy is usually a p good sign that the episode won’t include most of the gang but will include actual monsters (e.g. the one where shaggy turns into a werewolf, the one where shaggy works at the ghoul school, the one where shaggy fights confederate ghosts)

All really great imo but I think shaggy had a green shirt for the confederate mystery and also more importantly the confederates were the good guys

Edit- I guess there was that other time where Shaggy's confederate uncle left him a house, he is clearly dressed as a union soldier (scratch that I got the colors mixed up!) but equally clear is his name is a direct reference to a Confederate. Either way the actual ghosts in this one mostly weren't antagonists nor were they confederates, tho uncle Beauregard does appear at the very end. I'll call it a draw.

More importantly how much of Shaggy's wealth stems directly from slavery he is like a modern day Nixon.
