7-FI, Rank 0 Storm Hatchling
1/3 wounds

Fi was restless. They were too energetic to sleep any longer, yet too tired to go outside and do anything. So Fi ambled around. Simply existing. Not fighting any sort of creature.

It was messing with the little wyrmling's head.

Then stimulus. Shining glass. The bottle stuck out clearly from the other junk. Fi rubbed their chin thoughtfully with their tail. Only the most important of messages were delivered this way. The wyrmling brought it over to the Nook of Interesting Things (established just now), and looked it around. Time to "unwind". Just a flip here and the message would come out. Or, uhm. Fi coiled around the bottle the other way. No. Let's see, maybe their jaw would work better...

A few hours later Fi was screaming and banging the bottle on a rock. Finally it exploded into shards. Sheets of paper, once tightly rolled, flew all around. Fi tried to organize and look them over with all the grace of a limbless eel. There were all sorts of writings here, but what immediately caught their attention, was a song.
Now, Fi had never read anything before, and the papers were somewhat torn up, but that didn't stop them. No; hazy ancestral memories were more than enough to interpret this!

---

Listen this, ye scallywags

♫ ♩ ~

Goofus: Oh this is just ridiculous.

Goofus: That's not what it says, you're reading it wrong.
Gallant: Says you, oh now it is on!

Barricade your windows
We're a pack of tiny draggins
If we don't eat each other
We'll send all ya packing

A DRAGON I WAS MEANT TO BE!
STOMP HUMES AND EAT FILIGREE!

♫ ♩ ~

Goofus: A thing that will surely aid in molting is to sleep in a pile of silver
Gallant: A dragon is a natural born killer.

Wimpy little humefolk
You think you got courage?
We'll burn up your fields
And you'll need to forage!

A DRAGON I WAS MEANT TO BE!
STOMP HUMES AND EAT FILIGREE!

♫ ♩ ~

Goofus: Keep it down, you'll attract slayers with your song!
Gallant: Should a hunter come, we'll hit them like a gong.

Sailors should be wary
We'll break you with a wrist flick
Grab all of your jewellery
And use you as a toothpick!

A DRAGON I WAS MEANT TO BE!
STOMP HUMES AND EAT FILIGREE!

♫ ♩ ~

Goofus: We'll surely avoid molting if we give our gold to bluk.
Gallant: My wyrmic tummy is so hungry I could eat a flock of duck.

I'll knock over your can
Feast on all your garbage
I hope you've got a plan
To fight my nasty verbage!

A DRAGON I WAS MEANT TO BE!
STOMP HUMES AND EAT GAR-BA-GE....?????

----

The next verse... where was the next verse?! There was clearly supposed to be one but the markings were so faint. Fi floated around looking at the papers spread on the cave floor, and then they saw it happening. Ink was swimming off the pages! What nonsense was this?

1 – FLEX, Rank 0 Strength Hatchling
Power Test...13!
Power Test: Success!
Bunching and coiling, FLEX manages to shift the fallen column segment from the loam, and send it careening precipitously downhill toward the temple and its inhabitants. As the debris collides with the stonework, it smashes with great fury, bringing robed figures and beasts toward the site of the impact. One figure points a voluminous sleeve up toward the bluff, and several of the sleek white beasts immediately disperse into the forest, coursing with alarming speed and agility.
New Encounter!
Stronghold Defenses reduced!

2-GUY, Rank 0 Flavor Hatchling
Speed Test: Fail!
GUY has no intention of falling prey to the trap, and yet, their hunger gets the better of them. Seizing upon the meat, they dig in savagely, gobbets flying from the twisting of their jaws, even as the snare closes around them. The wyrmling is suddenly suspended, enveloped in a rope net that pulls tight around them. They attempt to wriggle free with their sleek coils, but they find themselves suddenly sluggish; their mouth strangely numb. Their gut churns, and their vision swims, and they fade in and out of consciousness.

GUY is Trapped, and may not move this Explore Phase!
New Encounter!

3-HOD, Rank 0 Holy Hatchling
Fear Test: Success!
The cult leader turns to regard the screeching wyrmling, goat skull headdress tilting slightly. Then, with a gesture of their implement, the cult begins to advance. HOD shrieks and spreads their wings, and suddenly the humes freeze in their tracks and turn to flee into the mountains!
Victorious, HOD takes to the skies once more, moments before the looming Craggro that had been advancing from behind them reaches the stone.
New Encounter!

4-BLUK, Rank 0 Garbage Hatchling
Speed Test...11!
Speed Test: Success!
Uncle's stash of commandeered urchin loot is safely locked away from grubby urchin fingers, but slithering through slimy grates is nothing to BLUK, who effortlessly wriggles into the chamber and begins rolling, secreting, and marking everything they can. When the chamber door slams open, Uncle is apoplectic at the array of torn and stained textiles, fouled spirits, and inedible edibles. BLUK quickly slips free of the chamber, avoiding Uncle's cleaver if not his shouts of fury and promises of violence.

New Encounter!

5-CHAD, Rank 0 Plutonium Hatchling
Fear Test: Success!
It takes a woefully craven creature to be so completely cowed by a wad of chewing gum with teeth, but the scrawny Hopper manages with flying colors (so long as the color is yellow).
Gained Thrall!

6-OZ, Rank 0 Radiance Hatchling

7-FI, Rank 0 Storm Hatchling
The cave proves to have decent acoustics, if one can pierce the crashing of waves and surge of tide; ideal for a young dragon to practice the mystical properties of their voice.
A Trait has been greatly reduced in cost!

8-LLRYCH, Rank 0 Change Hatchling
Tucimtathtak sets to work, extracting and shuttling valuable minerals from the mountains back to the lair. Even as the dwarf drops off a load, however, a chorus of many bestial snarls, growls, and cackles echoes through the rocks.
+3 Hoard!
New Encounter!

9-SYN, Rank 0 Parasite Hatchling
The struggle continues as SYN watches, until the bird's legs begin to wobble, and it finally collapses to the turf, laboring to breathe. The glob vanishes into the creature's mouth, and the wyrmling can see a great lump in the bird's throat, pulsing and writhing, before finally vanishing.
After a silent moment, the bird struggles back to its feet, seeming slightly unsteady but none the worse for wear. Clacking its beak and ruffling its feathers, it stalks off into the marsh with a purpose.
A Trait has been greatly reduced in cost!
New Encounter!

10-LANG, Rank 0 Lethargy Hatchling
LANG's well-deserved rest is interrupted by a sudden and intense pain in their mouth! The wyrmling chokes and gags, writhing and scraping at their mouth, but soon is overcome and blacks out.
When they awaken again, they feel...strange. Their jaw aches abominably, and a heat spreads across their face and throat. Their tongue, segmented and chitinous, tastes nothing, merely slides slickly without regard for its owner's wishes. Crossing their eyes, LANG sees tiny red cilia extending and retracting along its length. Either something terrible has occured, or LANG has successfully outsourced a portion of their bodily labor.
Head Change: Infested!

12-SPRYGG, Rank 0 Fey Hatchling
As SPRYGG twists the gleaming torc around their neck, the skeleton grins (being the only expression of which it is capable) and places a bony hand upon its sternum.
"Now then," it rattles. "Aren't you a picture."
The metal is cold on the wyrmling's neck, an aching cold that seems to seep to the bone.
-1 Hoard!
New Encounter!
Gained Treasure!

13-ZIN, Rank 0 Wind Hatchling
Fear Test...8!
Fear Test: Failure!
ZIN wings down toward the fallen dwarf, shrieking and trashing their tail most fearfully. The dwarves, however, react only with anger, and thunder and lead fill the sky. The wyrmling is forced to retreat under a hail of dwarffire, pursued by vengeful dwarves, before the creatures' wicked projectiles can destroy them entirely.
1 Wound!
New Encounter!

14-SEEK, Rank 0 Prophecy Hatchling
Speed Test: Success!
Diving into the creek, SEEK freely gobbles the ranked creatures. Partway through their feast, however, they see a dark shadow approaching rapidly through the murk, and the wyrmling darts away just as a great scaly mudreaver appears, crushing jaws snapping shut on a turtle with lethal finality!
Heal Canceled: SEEK lacks the ability to stockpile health!

16-GOL, Rank 0 Resilience Hatchling
Poring over the infernal runes and glyphs, GOL slowly begins to make some sense of the arcane diagrams and their purpose. While they may be intended to manifest and bind powers from the outer planes, the wyrmling derives from them a greater understanding of how to harness elemental fury within their body.
A Trait has been greatly reduced in cost!

18-KHR , Rank 0 Crystal Hatchling
Ignoring any distractions, KHR continues to plunge toward the distant and potentially nonexistent bottom of the sea. The ceaseless striving in the crushing abyss builds strength within the wyrmling's body current and body yet to be.
A Trait has been reduced in cost!

BODKIN
B-1
C-2

"The moons have changed," Bodkin begins quickly. "The world is changing. So must we. Ancient tales will soon become real again, and we must seize them...become the tale-tellers once more."
As Bodkin quickly makes his case, he scans the Hordemasters; all seem dubious, but is that a spark of interest in Strigante's enormous eyes?
"Dragons are hatching once more; it is known. Our chance is now, when they are yet young...I will recover eggs and whelps and return them to the hordes. What hume army can stand up to us once we've trained invincible warwyrms? If our esteemed Packmaster has not shifted himself to seize this opportunity, then let me. Let me bring this gift to the hordes."

A general murmuring commences, until Warmaster Strigante stands, talons clicking.
"A fine notion," the giant Owler hisses, eyeing Bodkin with dark triumph. "And let it not be said that we are aged beyond sense. Let it be known, then, to every clan and hold, that any warrior who returns a viable dragon for training will be named a champion of their tribe."

Bodkin's glands churn in conflict; the Hordemasters have taken action, but the glory will be hotly contested. With every aspiring champion out competing to secure a dragon egg, Bodkin's support within the tribes will be greatly reduced, leaving him vulnerable to the Hordemasters' machinations. If he isn't careful, he may find one of his allies stabbing him in the back for a greater share of glory. Still, there is nothing for it...He will simply have to be the first to succeed.

Seek, it seemed was not the most fearsome creature in these waters. Yet he already felt at home here, as though the small river was 'his'. Something in him still hungered, though his belly was full. BLUK let out a triumphant screech as he streaked out of Uncle's defiled chambers and through his legs. Good luck ever getting the smell out of that room, creep! Over the next few days, Bluk stayed in the den's many cubbies and crawlspaces, watching, listening.

The Uncle was still furious, as was expected. And now that BLUK was paying more attention, BLUK noticed that the urchins were never particularly fond of Uncle in the first place, the older Hume's fuming anger doing little to help. Either way, something had to be done about Uncle, but if BLUK could improve things for his wee friends (yes, even the fat urchin) in the process, well.

Argent Torc (3 Wealth)

Lair: The dusty phalanx's skeleton fractionally leaned forward onto its tower shield and grinned its bared teeth at Sprygg, who had just twisted one of the silver torcs around her neck. The skeleton tenderly placed a bony hand against its own sternum and gave out a ghostly clatter of a sigh.

"Now then," it rattled. "Aren't you a picture?" the phalanx skeleton asked, being coyly rhetorical.

Sprygg inspected herself in a dusty looking glass and cocked her head at the skeleton's strange question. Sensing no malice from the undead spirits trapped within the Barrow Mound, she breathed out a tiny sigh of relief. She wasn't in any danger from the strange hume-bone warriors, just as they promised! She scratched absentmindedly at the fur that was trapped beneath her new neck ornament with her claws. It itched something fierce!

Sprygg shivered suddenly from tail to tip. The shiny silver metal of the Argent Torc felt so cold where it pressed against Sprygg's neck, cold in a strange, biting way that caused a dull, tingling ache to spread across her skin and bleed into her bones. Sprygg knew that she couldn't wear the torc around her neck all the time, or else it might get stuck on her throat and crush her windpipe as she grew bigger over time. Sprygg didn't want to look a proverbial gift horse in the mouth before she ate it, however, so she nodded to the phalanx in obvious appreciation of the shiny treasure before making her way out of the Barrow Mound through the hole she'd made in the wall.

The grove dragon hatchling Sprygg emerged from the burrow she'd dug into the side of the Barrow Mound and climbed on top of the earthen gravesite to survey the foggy forest wrapped around her. She'd just allowed herself to be recruited by a bunch of clattering hume-bones to protect a Barrow Mound's contents, she realized. In return for protecting the barrow, she was supposedly granted safe passage through these parts, whatever that meant.

What it meant most for Sprygg was that she was probably safe here, so long as she stayed atop the Barrow Mound where it was unlikely she'd be bothered. If something did appear, well, then she'd just have to fight it off! That was part of the deal she'd made with the skeletons, after all...

Hoping for a bit of solitude in the shadowy, mist-shrouded forest, Sprygg curled up around one of the barrow markers that speared the earth and took a quick nap.

In the scuffle Syn grabs onto something with their teeth. They clamp down hard, close their eyes protectively, and wait hoping the bite is fatal. The sturk's thrashing continues, disturbing the brush and the mud but failing to connect with the hatchling.

Cautiously the wyrm opens an eye and realizes they've caught the creature by one of its spindly legs. Syn drags the creature around until they find a large rock, then proceeds to beat the bird against the stone like a drumstick until it stops moving. As the deceased sturk's neck continues twitching the wyrm goes looking for another rock. It tries lifting the stone for a solid minute before giving up and finding one it can actually carry, then laboriously shuffles it over to the sturk and unceremoniously drops it to a wet thunk.

The exhausted hatchling sits back on its haunches to rest. It tries to stay alert but heat of mid-day on its weary muscles slowly saps its energy. Syn rests their eyes, but the fear of predators keeps their ears perked and their mind from sleep. Reluctantly the hatchling rouses and heads off looking for somewhere less exposed to sunbathe or nap.

BLUK was waiting when Uncle Fingers came in. The Garbage Whelp stood upon the freshly soiled Denmaster's desk, waddling in tight, mocking circles. All the urchins' eyes were drawn to them.

For a split second, the two stared each other down. BLUK screeched and spread his wings wide.

Exploration: Sprygg curled up around one of the barrow markers that speared the earth and took a quick nap, hoping for a bit of solitude in the shadowy, mist-shrouded forest. Such rest, however, did not come easily when sleeping among the dead and damned...

Try as she might to dispel her gathering fears, as she drifted off to sleep Sprygg could feel a dreadful presence in the darkness, approaching her slowly from every direction.

Fear Test vs Dread (TN: 7): 2d6+1 5 - Failure!

Sprygg twitched and whimpered, her dreams filled with horrible and strange visions of the angry spirits trapped beneath the land:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgOCpX46Aks&t=242s

Sprygg snapped awake from her nightmare, disoriented and afraid. What did the hume, the beastfolk, and the clown mean? Why had the hideous witch turned into a dragon? Dangers for her kind seemed to lurk in every shadow, and Sprygg didn't know what to do!

The hatchling grove dragon cowered in the foggy forest atop the Barrow Mound, fearing whatever horrible eldritch forces might come for her next.

Last time on Symwyrm:

The cave echoes with song. The tune is merry but the lyrics keep growing increasingly incoherent as Fi runs out of text to interpret. There had to be more! The small dragon trashes around the cave floor, throwing up sand and muck but uncovering no more pages of the song. What is revealed however, is an ancient wooden chest, green from decay and bearing an emblem of skull and crossbones.
Fi bodyslams the container into submission but it proves to contain no song lyrics whatsoever.
High on frustration and excitement, Fi swims as fast as they can, not really noticing that they have left the cave.

This time on Symwyrm:

A swarm of gelatinous entities blorps aggre- Why's things always coming up to Fi. Fi blorps up to them!

"Why the small face, left your good eye at home?"

"Arrr, where's ye eye patch? Don't tell me you're so clumsy you lost yours."

"You know what's real cool? Depth perception."

Hello, yes! Is being very good day for posting, no?

1 – FLEX, Rank 0 Strength Hatchling

The temple was a lot big up close. A lot less ruined, too. And full of a lot more bloodthirsty statues, beasts, and... cultists? Monks? Priests? Flex wasn't quite sure what the right word was. What he did know was that he'd racked up a lot more weight than he could lift.

"Now d'yeh ken wha' I was tellin' yeh? Has it pierced tha' great Elector's Light-addled head? This is a bad place." Scrungus hissed under his breath as the pair crouched down behind a shrub.

Flex only nodded, humbled. He had thought he was strong. But he wasn't nearly swole enough for this place, even with its defenders distracted.

One day, though. One day.

A stench to blanch the minds of mortal men, a cloud of flesh-eating beetles, or an animate wave of sewage; fanciful urchin-spun tales differ on how Uncle Finger's resolve was shattered, but when all is said and done, the seedy handler manages the touts and pickers of Val-Scirra's gutters only at BLUK's sufferance.

The deepest mysteries shall wait for now.

1 – FLEX, Rank 0 Strength Hatchling
Concealed in the shadow of a marble statue, FLEX watches the mirrored surface of the reflection pool gleam and sparkle in the forest-mottled moonslight. The wyrmling's ordeal has been taxing, and the siren call of Hydration is strong.
FLEX...
A-Creeps to the pool and risks a drink.
B-Sends the Coarseradish to collect a leaf full of holy water.
C-Stays put and endures the thirst.

2-GUY, Rank 0 Flavor Hatchling
Looking over at the Unsavory Toad, GUY can't help but notice that their thrall is looking remarkably tasty. Blinking away visions of Toad Fricasee, the wyrmling grimaces against the infernal rumbling of their belly.
GUY...
A-Consumes the Toad. (New Encounter)
B-Consumes the Toad. (New Encounter)
C-Tries to resist the ever-growing urge. (Power Test)

3-HOD, Rank 0 Holy Hatchling
Shaking frost from their wing membranes, HOD sees a tiny hole in the mountainside, mostly concealed by a sheet of ice, that might provide shelter against the worst the mountains have to offer.
HOD...
A-Attempts to excavate and take shelter. (Power Test)
B-Searches for hot-blooded prey. (Speed Test)
C-Flies on in search of greater things. (Power Test)

4-BLUK, Rank 0 Garbage Hatchling
After humiliating Uncle Fingers, BLUK has noticed some of the urchins are showing less fear and obedience toward their handler. Tall Urchin has been particularly intransigent and vengeful; arguably nothing Fingers doesn't deserve, but something that might cut into the crew, and thus BLUK's bottom line. Additionally, disrespecting the wyrmling's thrall could be construed as disrespecting the wyrmling.
BLUK...
A-Lets matters play out as they will.
B-Tries to take Tall Urchin down a peg, as an example.
C-Starts riding around on Fingers, screeching and fouling anytime they disapprove of something.

5-CHAD, Rank 0 Plutonium Hatchling
CHAD is brought before their master, who examines the wyrmling with unsmiling satisfaction.
"Draconic instincts are developing quickly with exposure to the conjunction," he notes, stroking his curly goatee, "as predicted. Physical properties, however, lag behind. This should provide a useful boost to research..." Withdrawing a glowing purple syringe from his robes, Master reaches out to inject the wyrmling.
CHAD...
A-Accepts the injection. (+Horns: Swept; Trait Discount)
B-Tries to avoid the injection. (Speed Test)
C-Tries to have Badweak injected on their behalf. (Fear Test)

6-OZ, Rank 0 Radiance Hatchling
OZ is plundering the site of a long-ago battle, and finds fresh wormtracks through the dust, disturbed and unclear, but traceable. They seem to be headed toward the rocky ridge where the wyrmling makes their home.
OZ...
A-Carefully follows the tracks. (Speed Test)
B-Rushes back toward their Lair. (Power Test)
C-Ignores the tracks and keeps looting. (+Hoard)

7-FI, Rank 0 Storm Hatchling

FI...
A-Attempts to dominate the weakened creature into service. (Fear Test)
B-Attempts to rescue and restore the beastfolk. (+Thrall)
C-Loots the dying creature for all its spoils (and fresh meat). (+Treasure)

8-LLRYCH, Rank 0 Change Hatchling
The mountains are alive with beastfolk, scurrying here and there in packs, apparently searching for something, and showing no signs of quitting.
LLRYCH...
A-Lures a pack of beastfolk into a treacherous defile and buries them in rocks. (+Hoard)
B-Trails some beastfolk, attempting to get a measure of their mission. (Trait Discount)
C-Finds a lone beastfolk and attempts to ambush them. (Speed Test)

9-SYN, Rank 0 Parasite Hatchling
Following frantic splashing and a cry of agony, SYN is in time to see a mudreaver deathroll some unfortunate hume, then stuff the carcass beneath a submerged log to cure and drifts away.
SYN...
A-Sneaks a few nibbles and checks pockets before the mudreaver notices.
B-Consumes all that fresh meat for much-needed vitality.
C-Observes the mudreaver from a distance for ambush tips and further opportunities.

10-LANG, Rank 0 Lethargy Hatchling
LANG is having trouble breathing; their mouth and throat feel incredibly swollen. Their tongue is listless and thrashes in apparent discomfort.
LANG...
A-Massages their tongue vigorously to work out the inflammation.
B-Stretches and flexes their tongue to relieve cramping and increase flexibility.
C-Bashes their tongue against Gurd's rocky shell for a while, to shake out the kinks.

12-SPRYGG, Rank 0 Fey Hatchling
The night sounds of the forest still, in a manner SPRYGG knows all too well. From the heights of the great tor rising above the trees, a shaft of light once more slices down, harshly illuminating the ground near SPRYGG, before sweeping from side to side in its search pattern.
SPRYGG...
A-Returns to the shelter of the barrows. (Fear Test)
B-Retreats into the deep forest. (Power Test)
C-Steps into the light again. (Fear Test)

13-ZIN, Rank 0 Wind Hatchling
ZIN has found potential shelter, but these mountains seem crawling with dwarves.
ZIN...
A-Collapses part of the cave, to make entry more difficult for intruders. (Lair: +Defense, -Wealth)
B-Widens the hole, to extract as much as possible before the lair is lost. (Lair: -Defense, +Wealth)
C-Gouges the stone and strews dwarf beard and bone to scare off the curious. (Fear Test)

14-SEEK, Rank 0 Prophecy Hatchling
SEEK sees a large turtle on its back, lazily struggling with no urgency whatsoever to right itself. It is missing a leg, and its eyes are staring, sunken, and milky white.
SEEK...
A-Consumes the free turtle. (Power Test)
B-Watches to see what happens. (Trait Discount)
C-Pushes the ill and inauspicious beast away into the creek. (New Encounter)

16-GOL, Rank 0 Resilience Hatchling
GOL is swimming against a tide of blood and voices.
GOL...
A-Continues to reject the tug of the bloodwisdom.
B-Lets the current embrace them.

18-KHR , Rank 0 Crystal Hatchling
The power emanating from Below is great, and these depths have made KHR giddy; their sense threatens to flee them. Sounds buffet them from all directions, wails and roars from all corners of the earth and beyond, resolving in the wyrmling's overtaxed spirit as primordial song.
KHR...
A-Lets the deepsongs call to them.
B-Follows the desperately-distant thread of the moonsongs away.
C-Enters a defensive curl and floats for a while on the sustaining birthsong of sea.

ROGUE ELEMENTS
Bodkin and his band emerge from the mine, dirty and cramped, but without any evidence of dragons to show for their effort. These lands are filled with boltholes and hides, and he struggles not to despair at finding something before any of the teeming dragon-hungry hordlings beat him to it.
BODKIN...
A-Confines his search to the mountains, with its many dark caves and ravines; nearby, potentially target-rich, but very competitive.
B-Travels to the Hornswood and the Slough; far-removed, but more hospitable to his band's efforts.
C-Plies the waters of the Mirrormere; discouragingly vast, but unlikely to suffer from much competition.
