So I've definitely heard of series that have been axed having absolute trainwreck panicked wrap-ups, vindictive slaughterings of main characters, complete 180 tonal whip before the end, that sort of thing. But I can't really think of any off the top of my head. The only one I remember recently was some fanservicey gyaru manga which upon getting axed swerved into a detailed, multi-chapter gang-rape of a character for its remaining chapters before ending. I'm curious if folks have other examples of authors just going on the warpath or whatever in response to their series getting cancelled. Hm I'm struggling to think of anything. It's common for things to get a little weird just due to being rushed and needing to dump all the plot, but I can't think of any authors making things really crazy in a way that seems purposeful or vindictive.

Stealth Symphony goes completely off the walls once the writing was on the wall. Like Holy poo poo you have to read it to believe it. The main character turns out to be completely batshit insane. Turns into a dragon demon monster and starts destroying things and for all intended purposes. It's the antagonists of the story stepping in, decapitating him The Last Sayuki is an example of a really good manga getting axed early. I remember reading a series called Banana no Nana where the creator clearly had no idea how to end it in a way that made sense while keeping true to how he wanted it to end. The secondary protagonist was launched to the moon and the final two chapters had a bunch of nobodies we've never seen before acting like best pals with the protagonist, who is also launched to the moon and has graphic lesbian sex with aforementioned secondary protagonist.

Gal Cleaning! I think is the one you're talking about where after several chapters of infotainment where a guy explains cleaning tricks to a gyaru, a character at their school gets raped and the series ends. The mangaka for Noah's Notes/Kurogane/one more I forget famously is extremely online and got ranty when his first couple of series got axed. Notably he said Medaka Box was complete trash and he could write something better. A lot of the weirder axings I can't remember the exact titles for. There's a big murder mystery seinen that got axed and the mangaka published an explanation for the mystery as an afterward and it made absolutely no sense and looked like a Q-Anon conspiracy yarn board. There was a manga I think that popped out of a oneshot that got a ton of attention about a guy who gets trapped in mirrors or can travel through mirrors? The mangaka literally just ran out of ideas and ended with a complete non-sequitur gag and the note "I have no intentions of continuing this manga". "In another world with my sword" or something of that nature was a lovely isekai written by a psychotic Japanese nationalist and the MC was about a guy in his late 90s who had been in WWII dying peacefully but then waking up as a young man in another world, as mentioned- with his sword, where he can flex on everyone with his knowledge/skill. Turns out he was pretty blatantly based on a war criminal who had a contest with another solider to see how many people he could behead with his sword (which mostly included civilians). He posted a bunch of racist poo poo online and got his manga/anime cancelled- with the anime getting cancelled because the seiyuu actually all refused to be involved after finding out.

Does Bleach qualify? Although its incoherent rush to ending was probably less because it didn't have enough time (>10 chapters warning) and more because of the combination of lack of ability and probably indifference on Kubo's part. Though I think Bleach could have been a lot better if there had been a competent editor to keep Kubo on the ball instead of the blind fumbling around that ended up consuming most of its pages.

Those are all insane (and yeah, the Gal Cleaning one deffo went off the deep end), but the mangaka from Noah's Notes sorta made a point that, at least on its first year, Medaka Box felt like Nisio was just throwing poo poo at the wall to see what worked, because the series was all over the loving place.

It's gonna drive me nuts trying to think of what that murder mystery manga was because I remember checking it off and on and it kinda vanished, then I found out it got axed and the supplementary stuff got posted from the mangaka which made zero sense. Chagecha was by the mangaka of Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo and got probably the fastest axe in Jump history at 8 chapters.

If I remember right, the show was cancelled at 39 episodes, then Tomino was able to argue the sponsors back up to 43, which let the staff bring things to a natural conclusion. The recent doc even mentioned how the staff was relieved to end early, since they'd been running on fumes for a while. Having one of your top animators in the hospital will do that. Also, VHS for Gundam wasn't a thing in the original release. The reruns and the model kits did well enough to let Tomino make the movies, and those were smash successes turning Gundam into a cultural icon.

Not exactly the kind of vindictive manga suicide you're talking about, but Criminale! started out fun, introduced a (pretty interesting) new character, and then went so deep into that new character's tragic backstory that it kinda soured the whole concept. Didn't take long to get axed after that.

At that time, he never drew sex scenes, avoided pictures of genitals and made nudes cute rather than sexy,[19] though the manga regularly showed male genitals throughout its run, including a castration scene. His fans supported him throughout the PTA protests. They sent him letters where they expressed how they were aware that the adults cracking down on them were reading raunchier stuff than what Nagai was producing.[19] The protests were not only against the manga, but also against the TV series. The PTA managed to prevent the distribution of the magazine in some parts of Japan.[17] As a result of the protests, when the series was about to be cancelled because of the PTA, Nagai changed the theme in Harenchi Gakuen into a more mature and serious matter, from nonsense gags with sexy touches, to a full-scale war where murder was depicted in the bloody way for which many know him. The funny part of DBZ is that the whole android saga rotating door of villains thing wasn't even because of his *actual* editor. His previous editor just called him up to shittalk each villain he came up with and Toriyama acquiesced because that man had put the fear of god in him even if he had no power over him anymore. "What? The villains are an old guy and a clown?" "What? The villains are two punk kids?" "This cell guy looks okay. So what's his final form like?" just imagine getting coldcalled by some guy shittalking the villains of your manga

Shokugeki no Souma didn’t get a last minute wrap-up axe like Bleach but it did get a very transparent final arc that somehow made absolutely nobody happy with anything about it. The author also decided to make the impending threat a forced marriage that we also find out in the last two (bonus chapters, because the manga wasn’t allowed anything resembling a satisfying wrap-up chapter in the actual magazine) chapters was going to be incestuous if it went through. The final arc was just loving miserable and while I cannot prove anything about it, I have no doubts the author was pissed off about either the axe or fan reactions. Bleach’s ending was so much worse but it was at least an interesting trainwreck, Shokugeki’s ending just seemed to suck the soul out of anyone reading it as it went on.
