I gotta admit I'm a sucker for retro sci-fi stuff like hand-loaded disintegrator rifles. It feels like forever since any new sci-fi has had a consistent visual theme and language for its technology; Star Trek was pretty good at it too, with distinct aesthetics for different cultures and factions.

In general, just do other genre stuff in that setting! Branch out and do something that isn't A Star Wars in the same setting as star wars

I think my favorite thing about the boys TV show is that as someone who's read the comic a dozen times they've managed to adapt and update the themes perfectly for 2019 (vought being basically Disney but trying to get into drone strikes instead of the other way around is a big one) but also they've twisted the plot around enough that I genuinely don't know where they're going in terms of the actual story

Like there were bits of the comic that I was explaining to my partner because I was like alright well they're definitely not doing THAT now so it's not a spoiler

And we get to the end and they're like ok so how did this happen in the comic and I just kinda stared at the tv

The only problem I had with The Boys was the idea that the company that handles the supers would let them anywhere near an evangelist who touts gay conversion therapy in 2019, when they're supposed to be these antiseptic, meticulously focus grouped corporate products. That feels like a an artifact of older source material. They should be #woke brands. If anything, one of them is getting sent to Pride.

edit: was typing up the above while this was posted

In the comic the religion stuff works better because you have longer to work with starlight's long crisis of faith and to explain that the Evangelical appearances are carefully workshopped and focused group to offend literally nobody meanwhile they are in fact assigning some capes to be The Gay One or whatever and do that kind of pandering also

I think they made it clear by the end of season 1 that Butcher's wife cucked him with Homelander, and Butcher was so full of himself that he never thought his wife could leave him and just assumed Homelander must've raped and had her disappeared. At least the impression I got was that it was a starstruck fling that resulted in an accidental superpregnancy, that Vought had to cover up.

My personal theory big spoilers don't read if you haven't read the comic dead serious here is that they're still going to do the black noir is a clone reveal and use that to do a riff on Batman vs Superman when homelander finds out the kid isn't his

Also the crossed web comic is by si Spurrier, one of the two best writers out of the UK in the last decade, which is why it's one of the few good bits

No, but if we're running with the metaphor that these superheroes are meticulously managed brands run by a major corporation, it doesn't make sense that they're letting them anywhere near that rodeo, much less sending them against their will. How would Disney like, say, Brie Larson appearing at a Focus on the Family event?

Imo it's slightly different because brie Larson is an actress playing a superhero and not someone who has literally sold the rights to their life to Disney to be managed by Disney forever

General Dog posted:

Is that something out of the comic? I haven't read it.

The me too bit is just for the show, it's one of the updates that works a lot better than the original

Originally they go to revamp her costume and origin again and they decide to make her dark and gritty by having her new backstory be rape survivor and she melts the gently caress down on them and it's a v blatant call-out of comics being edgy without doing anything with their transgressive material (which you can argue about the boys itself being edgy for the sake of it but things like starlight's assault are core parts of the narrative and there's development and poo poo it's not just bad thing happened lol rip)

Because in 2007 or whatever we hadn't hit me too for that to be a cultural reference while every comics reader knows a book or two or three that does gross edgy poo poo for the sake of it

The Moore/gibbons deal was that they would get it back when it left print and that was 30 years ago and it's never left print because of the rise of trade paperbacks and they got absolutely hosed because of things they could not foresee

written serial comics get up to the dumbest poo poo anyway because they don't have to pass the same mustard for quality control that a billion dollar movie does

what if jubilee from the x-men became a vampire? not for any good reason, just to loving mix poo poo up i guess.
what if spider-man's power set was actually a gift from a magical spider spirit and also there were other spirits that hated the spider spirit and wanted to eat spider-man and then spider-man got retractable bone knives like wolverine?
what if batman became the joker and killed all the other superheroes and then he kept vampire children on leashes and made a legion of doom out of other alternate dimension batmans who were also evil for contrived reasons?

that's not even one-off style comics where they write a self-contained story about something dumb, those are events that transpired in the main comic continuity. i'd be fine with the movies getting to exert stronger quality control over the written comics because they are full of really dumb poo poo

Evil joker Batman is explicitly Batman from another dimension though like come on the whole point of dark nights is that it's evil batmen from dimensions where Batman just lost his goddamn poo poo for varying reasons also the genderswapped what if Batman was Aquaman one whipped scrote

Also what if Spiderman was magic is legit one of the best ideas thats been brought to that table in decades and it was a ton of fun and I hate them for ignoring it considering that it gave us the comic book event that gave us the best superhero movie since blade

I think it’d probably be fine, but it would be an entirely different show - a lot of the humor was highly topical, and while it did an amazing job skewering upper class lib cultural/lifestyle pretensions it’s commentary on (then) current political events and figures tended to be among its weakest material

blackface wasn’t more culturally accepted during that time period, 30 Rock largely escaped controversy about it and other “problematic” material because it was always *extremely* self-aware of the cultural/historical context and the butt of the joke was always the ignorance and self-absorption of specific characters (and it’s generally also a commentary about the aforementioned cultural/historic context)

also, as general dog pointed out, the jokes were generally funny

I think as a show it’ll have some difficulty standing the test of time, but that’s more due to the afforementioned topicality than because future audiences would be outraged by, say, the scene where Jack does voices for all of Tracy’s family during therapy

the only part of that show i ever saw was alex baldwin demanding they pretape coverage for disasters and they're brainstorming things that could happen and someone says "a tornado hits a handgun factory"

and five minutes later you cut to deniro saying we all remember where we were when that tornado hit the handgun factory

I watched a video that pointed out Spider-verse is basically the first time Miles Morales has gotten a significant personality and spotlight, since his original comics debut was kind of a mess and the MCU basically ripped everything original about his life for their version of Peter Parker, so Spider-verse had to play up different elements of the character to have him stand out from the various Peters. Having him be more creative and social than geeky Parker makes for a new perspective, as well as his family already being involved on both sides of the law and giving him an existing connection to the superhero/villain world.
