I gotta admit I'm a sucker for retro sci-fi stuff like hand-loaded disintegrator rifles. It feels like forever since any new sci-fi has had a consistent visual theme and language for its technology; Star Trek was pretty good at it too, with distinct aesthetics for different cultures and factions.

The other impression I get is that it is very similar to Stargate - we get a different planet of the week and the SG team, I mean Mando and Baby Yoda, have to save a different Renaissance faire village. I guess on the upside we will probably get to see more variety in locales rather than just different parts of the Vancouver forests.

The only problem I had with The Boys was the idea that the company that handles the supers would let them anywhere near an evangelist who touts gay conversion therapy in 2019, when they're supposed to be these antiseptic, meticulously focus grouped corporate products. That feels like a an artifact of older source material. They should be #woke brands. If anything, one of them is getting sent to Pride.

I think they made it clear by the end of season 1 that Butcher's wife cucked him with Homelander, and Butcher was so full of himself that he never thought his wife could leave him and just assumed Homelander must've raped and had her disappeared. At least the impression I got was that it was a starstruck fling that resulted in an accidental superpregnancy, that Vought had to cover up.

that's not even one-off style comics where they write a self-contained story about something dumb, those are events that transpired in the main comic continuity. i'd be fine with the movies getting to exert stronger quality control over the written comics because they are full of really dumb poo poo

blackface wasn’t more culturally accepted during that time period, 30 Rock largely escaped controversy about it and other “problematic” material because it was always *extremely* self-aware of the cultural/historical context and the butt of the joke was always the ignorance and self-absorption of specific characters (and it’s generally also a commentary about the aforementioned cultural/historic context)

also, as general dog pointed out, the jokes were generally funny

I think as a show it’ll have some difficulty standing the test of time, but that’s more due to the afforementioned topicality than because future audiences would be outraged by, say, the scene where Jack does voices for all of Tracy’s family during therapy

Peter B Parker was basically Ditko era Spidey; luckless, aloof and selfish.

I watched a video that pointed out Spider-verse is basically the first time Miles Morales has gotten a significant personality and spotlight, since his original comics debut was kind of a mess and the MCU basically ripped everything original about his life for their version of Peter Parker, so Spider-verse had to play up different elements of the character to have him stand out from the various Peters. Having him be more creative and social than geeky Parker makes for a new perspective, as well as his family already being involved on both sides of the law and giving him an existing connection to the superhero/villain world.
