Honestly, this plot is less tight than 999 or VLR but I had a lot more fun with this game.

I was fully expecting Wadjet to have actually been from space and it somehow occupies all timelines at once and whenever Aiba would simulate stuff during a fight it was just her checking into other timelines to see what other Dates had done.

jimmydalad posted:I thought bait and switch of Iris and Manaka was pretty cool in retrospect. Having played the Zero Escape series beforehand, you are sort of expecting weird time shenanigans to happen because that’s just the style of the game. In fact, Iris’s route would probably be 100% legitimate serious with Naix and everything if it was in a Zero Escape like game. It helps makes it easier to believe Iris and makes the deconstruction and the reveal of the brain tumour that much stronger and helps sort of prime the player into recognising that it’s probably not going to play by exactly the same rules. The entire right side pre resolution unlocking really stuck with me and I didn’t even realise that it was an entirely different person until it was explained to me by Aiba. Oh, one thing that bugged me. In the Ota ending, you see the video of Mayumi coming up to Iris with the knife, and then she just....stops, and Iris picks it up. I thought that was super weird, and was expecting some mind hacking powers or something.

I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for a second considering Mayumi’s age and mental state. It’s a toss-up whether Hitomi or Mayumi is best mother of the series. Mayumi is just doing her best even with her dementia but Ota was sorta raised into an entitled NEET/GaMeR. I guess Iris is ok but Hitomi did sort of hook up with an Assassin and let said Assassin spend time with Iris like nothing was wrong whatsoever. Still better than Shoko and Renju though EDIT: so it looks like Uchikoshi did an interview recently: https://www.frontlinejp.net/2019/09/19/ai-the-somnium-files-developer-interview/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf I like them mentioning they put extra effort into the dirty jokes. Oh Uchikoshi . Apart from that, it’s sort of interesting to hear how each somnium and it’s logic is based on the character’s personality and memories which makes me wonder whether Iris subconsciously wanted Date to break through her delusions of Naix etc, especially because doing so leads you to the true resolution ending Route. I feel like so much discussion could be had about the somniums and the concept alone is awesome. jimmydalad fucked around with this message at 08:05 on Sep 24, 2019 |

Overwatch Porn posted:the somniums were cool thematically but i think gameplay-wise i preferred the escape rooms I dunno, I liked the somnium design because it did feel like there was an actual time pressure and you couldn’t just smash everything together and see if that works. You had to really think about what you approached and later somniums really had you try to be smart with your timies, especially psyching in the refrain. Escape rooms sorta felt tacked on for me in zero escape while I felt really engaged in the somniums.

I really did not care for the time limit gimmick. It could have easily been arbitrary when they had to pull you out and it wouldn't have changed anything.

Shotgunned this over the weekend. Uchikoshi does not disappoint overall, and although this felt shorter than ZTD, Steam seems to disagree with me on that. I kinda saw the body-swapping plot twist coming from a mile away, though, long before it was ever brought up as possible. I guess I'm wising onto Uchikoshi's poo poo after having the rug pulled out from underneath me several times in Zero Escape. Still, the mystery this time around seemed... simpler? I guess, than in his previous works. Aibo's goofy-rear end reaction when she drinks the elephant soup somehow amused me immensely.

One of my favourite somnium moments in in #89’s where you can wear the pot of liquid on your head and Aiba just spends the rest of the Somnium wearing it. Seeing her blow the fan with a giant pot on her head was a level of absurd that I couldn’t help but love.

So did I miss figuring out why Mizuki has superpowers? Nanomachines? Also creepiest part of the game was Renju and Hitomi keeping their friend's corpse stashed away naked (like seriously, throw a dress on her or something) for 18 years just so they could occasionally look at her. That'll be a real awkward conversation if anyone ever bothers telling Iris. Also I did the entire left half (except the Boss lock) first and quite liked it that way, it felt more like a genuine murder mystery. I really wish they'd have cut down on all the random stuff you could click that had no lines or relevance cause that got tiring real quick and yet you still had to check every time for unique lines (well okay, you don't -have- to).

Just conserve all of your [1] TIMIEs for REFRaiN, make sure you only use them on the doors and to known down the ladder. MOUNTaiN you just need to move quickly and only pick the options you need to, there isn't really a strategy to conserve time there aside from use the map.

If you're like me, you probably skipped them because they looked useless. Mountain doesn't really have any tricks to it. Orient yourself with the popups that you can see in the distance, and move directly to the next object without wasting any movement.

Now I remember. MOUNTaiN was the one where I got frustrated loving around with everything and didn't bother with retries or reloads. There is one wrinkle: before you stick your hand in Hole in Tree 1, you need to worship Rock 2 for a 1/4 TIMIE and then hold on to it until you're jumping into Hole 3. Just finished, game's good. Enjoyed it for the what 30 hours I played. REFRaiN can suck a fat one though. Not that it was bad, just had to repeat stuff to burn the negative Timies. Edit: Oh, it was also very jarring for the ending cutscene to have it all in spoken English considering I played the entire game with Japanese. https://twitter.com/8bitminiboss/status/1178268073419083777 8-bit Miniboss fucked around with this message at 12:20 on Sep 29, 2019 |

Endings I’ve gotten so far in order: Boss lock Believe Iris Girlfriend vacation Mizuki My head is spinning. I really did not enjoy the believe iris route, but going left the whole way first really hosed with my expectations. I’ve never played 999 or the other games so I went into this completely blind. I think I’m going down the Ota path next.

I thought the implication of Aiba reconstructing herself was that Iris' delusion of Wadget being a crazy alien technology was more real than anyone realized. Is that not the takeaway I was supposed to have? Also, I seem to have completely missed out on the dialogue about LGBT people that has the chuds in a tizzy. Where was it?

To be precise it's on Day 5, Tuesday in Mizuki's route, a.k.a. seisAI. I still want to know what's up with that space on the flowchart right between Mizuki's Day 5 and 6. It's just big enough for another day.

Okay, some more thoughts from finishing the game: Just as it should, Hitomi's arm has been healed by the power of dance. I assumed the dance sequence was just a silly noncanon thing, but then they started talking to each other after it was over, which implies to me that Aiba must have made herself known pretty soon after Saito's death, except everyone decided to spend 3 months recruiting people and rehearsing the dance for Date's surprise. (also, lol @ "by the way everyone, the reason you can all see me is *everyone starts talking loudly over Aiba*") Truth serum appears to work in this universe extremely perfectly, based on that one scene, so what is even the point of ABIS and Psyncing at all?
|
# ? Oct 1, 2019 04:20 |

The dance sequence is totally in-universe, and is also the best. I think the implication is that the government and the police headquarters awarded Hitomi a poo poo-ton of money (along with Iris) that allowed them both to afford nano machine treatment and fix their issues. I think it said that Mayumi would have been able to as well, since they all got hush money, but her condition wasn't solvable even by robot magic. I think Psyncing is an afterthought; the original point of the whole thing probably was the body-swap mechanic the prototype does, and they later found it had applications for people who can't speak (like from aphonia or comas or the like). Everyone in ABIS is down with incredibly shady poo poo, so I think the idea that they fully intended to use it to swap bodies for crazy illegal things fits with the characterization we have for them. Squiddycat posted:Mizuki is the best character and isn't in the true route enough She definitely doesn't get to hang around enough. I felt that way about most of the characters, honestly. The cast is really good!
