I liked everyone in the end, even Pewter who was a piece of poo poo on the true ending path because he's your bff to the bitter end on the other side when Renju is dead and he wants revenge. I just wish he hadn't been so easily manipulated into doing terrible things. :(

I feel sorta bad that the gay guy is a villain, gets a bit of a raw deal in the true ending and everyone glosses over how he got manipulated by a psychopath who was in the body of his ex-lover. Dude got a super raw deal considering he’s a bro in the “Don’t try to solve Mizuki’s mental trauma with more mental trauma” path.

Also I ended on the true ending path on my first run where you learn Iris has a brain tumour and then got plotlocked. Having to do Iris’s route immediately after where you humour her deranged mental paranoid creations caused by a malignant brain tumour really sours that path and made me feel lovely throughout in a good way. Like oh my god.

This game can get really really dark.

Also having done Iris side iris somnium and then doing Saito Iris somnium shouldve topped me off that something fucky was going on. I love the whole pulling aspects from other routes aspect of Uchikoshi games.

I thought that it was the Wadget system encouraging the cross path knowledge through like weird subconscious linking/interaction with Aiba but I guess they never explain it.

Dance mode is great.

So, would anyone say there's an "ideal" route to take through the game? The right side kind of felt like it was meant to be the first route you go down, with more explanations for what's going on, but the left has a lot of things like PSYNCIN' IN THE VaiN that would have more impact if they're done first.

How many plot locks are there in all? I only saw two, on the Annihilation and Resolution routes.

I think it’s more natural to go the route where you cure Mizuki and don’t makw her go through mental trauma in her dream. That was a bit of a dick move.

I went on Resolution Route for my first one which was a bit trippy. Maybe Oda is the first once considering it has a feel good ending and has the stinger about the Eyeball in Renju’s body and another thing that’s slippibg my mind.

Mizuki May also be a good pick since you’re most likely want to support her in your first immediate playthrough as your daughter figure.

Iris route is really depressing when you realise you’re just enabling her malignant brain tumour thoughts. Let alone the ending where she loses an eye.

I was not expecting to watch Iris getting sawed in half in the Annihilation Route. That poo poo was gory as hell. I guess after Akame chainsaw I shouldn’t have been surprised but they didn’t hold back the gore and misery.

Seeing Saito’s head blow up was indeed the best though especially since you’re likely to be going from Annihilation Route which is super depressing and makes you want to deck the guy.

Also when he gets angry at you for stealing his body when he was the idiot to bodyswitch for the lulz after hearing about it from Falco. They really go out of your way to make you hate the bastard.

I feel like this is gonna be a case where the fans think more about the shifting and how he gains information from other timelines than the writers since the game doesn’t give anything.

Also maybe I’m an idiot but I was still suspicious as gently caress of everyone even though I did Iris route to completion first. Yeah the parallel worlds, the eye losing and the experimental psync machine are in Iris route but those don’t really contribute towards fully solving the body-swapping mystery and I still thought that Oda was the Polar bear ala the sockpuppeting he did before.

I did not expect dementia to come into a story and it took me by surprise. Mayumi’s somnium was tearjerking but heartwarming at the same time. She really is just a mum trying to do her best for her son. At least Ota sorta gets his poo poo in shape in Oda and Resolution endings.

Also why no Boss and Pewter endings? They were cool and awesome.

I thought bait and switch of Iris and Manaka was pretty cool in retrospect. Having played the Zero Escape series beforehand, you are sort of expecting weird time shenanigans to happen because that’s just the style of the game. In fact, Iris’s route would probably be 100% legitimate serious with Naix and everything if it was in a Zero Escape like game. It helps makes it easier to believe Iris and makes the deconstruction and the reveal of the brain tumour that much stronger and helps sort of prime the player into recognising that it’s probably not going to play by exactly the same rules. The entire right side pre resolution unlocking really stuck with me and I didn’t even realise that it was an entirely different person until it was explained to me by Aiba.

Come to think of it, pretty much everyone you somnium into has a traumatic history, some form of memory loss or brain damage except for Ota. Maybe that’s why his somnium is much for fanciful and light-hearted than the rest of the somniums in the game.

two things, though

where did the game mention that pewter and renju were lovers? I must have missed that
also why did saito swap into rohan to begin with? what did he have to gain

I forget at what point it was mentioned, but Mama talks about a fight that came about when Renju and Date got in a fight because Date accidentally spilt alcohol onto Renju’s watch which was a special gift that was given to him by his lover after he divorced Shoko which he valued more than his life or something like that. In Iris Route I believe, Mana mentions that an informant that she arranged to meet Iris and Date to discuss Renju was Pewter but uses his real name and mentioned that he was the one that gave Renju the watch.

As for the latter, from what I can remember, after torturing Falco in Rohan and learning about everything that was going on with that fiasco of bodychanging and psync machines, Saito was pretty much like “oh cool that sounds fun. Let’s try it lol.” And then got the Kamakuras to steal the experimental psync machine so that they could bodyswap.

Essentially a case of chaotic stupid with Saito. Dude was nutters.

This was literally the exact same thing that was going through my head. Stop psyncing me, narc.

Oh, one thing that bugged me. In the Ota ending, you see the video of Mayumi coming up to Iris with the knife, and then she just....stops, and Iris picks it up. I thought that was super weird, and was expecting some mind hacking powers or something.

I mean, the woman has dementia. I’m willing to suspend my disbelief for a second considering Mayumi’s age and mental state.

It’s a toss-up whether Hitomi or Mayumi is best mother of the series. Mayumi is just doing her best even with her dementia but Ota was sorta raised into an entitled NEET/GaMeR. I guess Iris is ok but Hitomi did sort of hook up with an Assassin and let said Assassin spend time with Iris like nothing was wrong whatsoever.

Still better than Shoko and Renju though

EDIT: so it looks like Uchikoshi did an interview recently: https://www.frontlinejp.net/2019/09/19/ai-the-somnium-files-developer-interview/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

I like them mentioning they put extra effort into the dirty jokes. Oh Uchikoshi :allears:. Apart from that, it’s sort of interesting to hear how each somnium and it’s logic is based on the character’s personality and memories which makes me wonder whether Iris subconsciously wanted Date to break through her delusions of Naix etc, especially because doing so leads you to the true resolution ending Route. I feel like so much discussion could be had about the somniums and the concept alone is awesome.

the somniums were cool thematically but i think gameplay-wise i preferred the escape rooms

I dunno, I liked the somnium design because it did feel like there was an actual time pressure and you couldn’t just smash everything together and see if that works. You had to really think about what you approached and later somniums really had you try to be smart with your timies, especially psyching in the refrain.

Escape rooms sorta felt tacked on for me in zero escape while I felt really engaged in the somniums.

One of my favourite somnium moments in in #89’s where you can wear the pot of liquid on your head and Aiba just spends the rest of the Somnium wearing it. Seeing her blow the fan with a giant pot on her head was a level of absurd that I couldn’t help but love.

It’s a Mizuki bit in one of the later game days. Happens on one of the right side paths on the flowchart I believe. Fairly obvious text dialog when in Marble with her.

It’s on the left side in her route. If I am not mistaken, it is before So is revealed to be the guy in the polar bear suit or somewhere around there.

Though I thought something was up with Aiba “joking” about the medication, I still thought it was a fun twist with a game full of fun twists. It also made me think that in those moments where Date gets increased reaction speeds to porn, maybe Aiba is like injecting an increase in dopamine into the system to encourage such a reaction to happen. Considering that Date doesn’t take any pills or anything, Aiba has to be the one to give him the dopamine he needs to counteract Saito’s brain problems.

Also, I had an epiphany that the figure we see making out with So in Saito!Iris’ Somnium is most likely Manama and that he saw them being romantic together when he was a child. Considering how Iris and Manama look eerily similar, it could have unconsciously triggered that memory inside Saito.

I feel like this game has so much depth to it which is fascinating.
