Confusion As a Natural State of Being
Three score and a dozen years ago, your father traveled to the highlands, beyond the water’s surface and among the air-breathers. You had only been a child then, scales only first growing in, still light enough to swim, but you remember hoping that he would bring you back a souvenir.

He did not come back. It is normal for journeys to the surface world to take years to return, but as the decades passed, dread found a home in your family’s minds. Ten years ago, most of your family had given up hope, as your uncle had traveled to the surface and returned, and said that war had come to the air-breathers and your father’s tracks were long-covered by its ashes. You resolved to find him, or to find his skin and bring it home to inter in your family’s tomb if he had perished.

Now a young adult, you have gathered the resources you need and said your goodbyes. Your family is sad to see you go, but the spirit of honor goes with you and they cannot help but be glad for that.

Travel takes long. You join a caravan headed for the surface city of Kerra, alongside several merchants from the great city of Twelfthridge Deep, as well as a handful of others from shallower towns, including one from your home, Rusty Grotto. The caravan’s path follows the same corridor that your father’s travel plans marked out, and you remember him speaking well of Kerra when you were a child, so you are confident that will be where you begin your search. In the meantime, though, you have weeks to get to know your fellow travelers.

Who do you focus your social efforts on during the journey?

A: The merchants. Trade with the surface is lucrative, and it’s likely that many if not all of the merchants have visited the surface recently, and are probably well connected. They might be a bit tight-lipped to someone from the shallows like you, though.

B: The other folks from the grotto. They aren’t likely to know much more about the surface, but getting to know their reasons for heading to Kerra might be useful. You’re already on polite terms with pretty much everybody from your hometown, and depending on what kind of business they have, you might be able to convince one to come along with you after they’ve finished whatever business they have.

C: There’s one other person who really sticks out to you. An erythban going from how thorny their scales are. Their journey has been long already, and they look wizened beyond their age. The tingling in your spine tells you they’ve got magic on them. Magic is rare below the surface, so they must be pretty rich, or even a mage. Either way, if you can get them to talk with you, they’re bound to have something useful to share.

1. I should have found the thread before it finished
2. Grimper may have actually done one or two things wrong
