i mean obviously it was done because they had the power to do it. sometimes it was a ritual sacrfice, yes. the aztecs did that a lot and in kindof astonishing numbers, but wikipedia also has examples like the lithuanians burning an opposing general in full armor as a sacrifice to their old gods. otoh the romans often executed opposing generals but didn’t consider it ritually significant
