My personal preference because games keep getting bigger is a 1T SSD.

Yeah I just went and checked and Modern Warfare is 190 GB all by itself. It's gotten nuts. My current system I actually have a 250 GB SDD for Windows, games on a separate 1 TB drive, and then a third HDD just for bulk storage. Not saying you need three, which I mostly have because I had extra drives lying around, but I've been glad for the extra space.

I have a friend who wants a PC solely to play dead by daylight, what is their best option, preferably under $500, and preferably not built from scratch? My thought was a refurb and dropping in a 1060 or something, but I don't know squat about pre-built systems.

It lacks 16GB of RAM, but you should be able to add another DIMM easily and beat out an equivalent refurbished prebuilt + GTX 1650 + SSD from the Dell Outlet. Great, thank you! I'll pass it along.

All this time helping friends/family build new PCs has me wondering whether there are any meaningful upgrade options for my 4-year-old system. Is there anything worthwhile to upgrade here, or am I getting into "new build" territory at this point?

Everything is still humming along nicely, I'm just seeing that newer games, especially FPS like modern warfare, are dropping more into the 40-60 fps territory even on medium settings at 1080p. Is the advice on waiting just because of covid issues now affecting price/availability, or more because of new tech on the horizon?

Alright, thank you. Probably won't mess with MSI if knowing the choke doesn't help if there's nothing to do about it. I got my brother setup with something similar to the build I posted a couple days ago because Microcenter seems to be getting things back in stock, but there's no such store in Florida so I'm at the mercy of online stock anyway.

Do you have a solid state hard drive to use? If not, I strongly suggest adding one or replacing the drive you have picked out.

That's a monster of a graphics card for only wanting 60fps at modest settings.

What country are you in? USA What are you using the system for? Gaming What's your budget? Some flexibility, but preferably $1,000 - $1,200 If you're gaming, what is your monitor resolution / refresh rate? For now, using an older monitor (ViewSonic XG2401 144 Hz at 1080p with freesync), but would like the option of upgrading to 1440 in the future This is what I have so far: PCPartPicker Part List CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor ($208.99 @ Amazon) Motherboard: MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard ($109.99 @ Newegg) Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory ($74.99 @ Newegg) Storage: Western Digital Blue SN550 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive ($59.94 @ Amazon) Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB GAMING OC Video Card ($409.99 @ Amazon) Case: Corsair 275R Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case ($115.41 @ Amazon) Power Supply: Corsair CXM 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply ($94.99 @ Best Buy) Total: $1074.30 Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available Generated by PCPartPicker 2020-08-28 22:44 EDT-0400 I am hoping the b550 gives me some growth potential, and the markup doesn't look bad over a b450. For whatever reason the Ryzen 3600s are $199 right now, so I figure the extra $8 for the 3600x isn't such a bad deal. I already have a 1TB ssd to throw games on, so I primarily just need something for the OS. I'm not sold on the case (just went with whatever the pcpartpicker recommended system had) and could not care less about aesthetics/RGB. If there are savings to be had there (without sacrificing function such as ease of working in the case or nose reduction) I'm game. Edit: went with a micro atx with on-board wifi (thanks Mu Zeta and sean10mm) and a Gigabyte 5700 xt. Enigma fucked around with this message at 00:18 on Aug 30, 2020 |

Am I correct that, for gaming or anything that isn't large file transfer, a m.2 nvme SSD offers negligible benefits over a sata ssd for the difference in price? I have a 500 gb m.2 nvme picked out for my main/OS drive and was planning to bring over my sata ssd I use to store games rather than getting a bigger main drive.

fwiw, I got the 3600x cause it's $8 more than the 3600 and has a slightly faster clock and bigger cooler.

I ordered a white version of the case cause it was $30 less than the black and it won't match any of the all-black, high speed, low drag of my gpu and mobo and now I'm just sad I don't have any poop brown to complete the aesthetic mess
