The last new EU book I read was Black Spire. It's the big official tie-in book to Galaxy's Edge at Disney, which means the author is really hamstrung by needing to constantly show off all the food and shops and so on in a way that's a blatant advertisement for the theme parks. When she actually gets to write what she wants, it's all about PTS, torture, and one of the good guys sneaking in summary executions of captured First Order troopers when everyone else is gone because he's gone off the deep end into alcoholic self-destruction.

It also has a Rodian/Wookie romance.

For what it's worth, I didn't read the Vader issues that introduced Aphra and just dove right into her comics. It never seemed like I missed anything too important wrt continuity, but I know going back will surely enrich the character and her relationship to Vader. That said, I personally don't think it's paramount to read the Vader issues first if you want to get started with Aphra (unless you want to really dive into the Vader series anyways). Everyone seems to like the Vader series though, but I never really had an interest in reading it. Aphra's current run penned by Alyssa Wong is pretty solid so far. I'm too impatient to wait for the trades, but ffffff, it's also such a struggle having to wait for each issue.

Vader's first run is great. Second run was a bit wonkier. The introduction of Aphra and her droids is also fantastic, so I highly recommend reading it. It also introduces my favourite Imperial character since the Secret Order Guy from TIE Fighter.

That's my read on it thus far. They seem in a particular hurry to repeat all the mistakes that made the old EU an unmanageable mess in the first place.

But yes, Vader and Aphra are good uses of your time.

Gillen’s Vader and Jason Aaron’s Star Wars comics are both worth reading if you want some EU stuff. They both take place after A New Hope.

I forget how it went last year. Do episodes go up at midnight Eastern? Midnight Pacific? Or not until Friday AM?

I think it's midnight, I remember my son waking up early before school to watch them with me. :3:

Afaik it's part of the licensing agreement when uploading to SketchUp that the models are useable in productions. I know Archer uses a lot of vehicles from there. Tracing into a comic seems like it stretches the definition of use, though.

Does Discovery get good? I tried watching it, and got about 2 episodes in before I gave up. My general opinion was, "...what the gently caress is this? Why am I wasting time on this?" That was recently, too. About a month ago, figuring I'd give it a shot. Regretted it almost immediately.

Like, is season 2 better? I assume I'd have to slog through season 1 to get there?

I really hated those first 2 episodes, if that helps any.

For what it's worth, I think season 2 is better, as is the case with most shows, especially Star Trek. Next Gen season 1 is all but unwatchable.
However, if you really disliked the first season of Discovery, chances are it's just not your cup of tea, and season 2 probably will not pull you back into it.

Also, the first two episodes are kind of a rocky entry to the show. Many characters are portrayed as unlikable or with unclear motives, and it takes a while until the plot catches up with all of it. It took me two aborted attempts and my wife's constant recommendation to really get into it.

I liked season 1 well enough, but what turned me off were the needlessly redesigned Klingons. As soon as season two starts, a character on the show states "The Klingons are growing their hair and beards long again now that the war is over", and I knew the makers of the show had realized their error and were course-correcting. :-)

Alright, I’ll just skip it then. Thanks. I don’t need to hate watch anything, and I’ll let the people who like it have their thing to themselves.

Anyway, one more day until more Mando!

The Vader series that has Aphra in it is very good. Basically, it's Vader getting put in the dog house by the Emperor after he loses a Death Star, and having to worm his way back in his boss's good graces using his own resources after getting all his imperial support cut off and his metaphorical credit cards cancelled.
