For those not up on their presidential history and not getting all of the jokes in here:

Panel 2: President James Garfield was shot by an assassin, but current conventional wisdom is that he died of infections from doctors using unsterilized tools and bare hands to attempt to remove the bullet

Panel 3: President Herbert Hoover became famous for handling food relief and assistance to Europe following World War One (and is wearing a gas mask from the war)

Panel 4: President Rutherford B. Hayes, who had been a Major General in the 23rd Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War, ended Reconstruction, which could be argued to be clemency for the South (though there may be another reason I'm not aware of)

Panel 5: The "March of Dimes" was the national campaign to donate dimes to polio relief; FDR, who had polio, had his portrait placed on the dime following his death in part because of the association of polio with dimes. Salk, of course, cured polio.

Panel 7: President Franklin Pierce and his family were involved in a horrific train accident just prior to their inauguration, in which their only remaining son was killed by near decapitation. This accident is often used as an explanation for why Pierce fell mostly into alcoholism during his Presidency.

In fact, the opposite: the US wanted to get its money back for the loans it had made to the Allies in World War One, and put a lot of pressure on Britain and France to make regular repayments, which pushed those countries to put pressure on Germany to make reparation payments.

The US ended up devoting multiple conferences - the Dawes Plan and the Young Plan - specifically to help restructure reparation payments and loan payments into a schedule that all could agree to, but they never sent money or aid to Germany.

Is dynamite in particular used as a weapon or is any explosive attributed to Nobel

“Dynamite guns” in the late 19th century were seen as superior artillery, propelling dynamite charges via compressed air. More lethal upon landing than a shell, less dangerous to the crew as compressed air was less likely to explode than packed gunpowder.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamite_gun

Dynamite was also used as a bomb and as a packed charge against fortifications.

Vib Rib posted:

Even so, like... hundreds of millions of deaths?

Sure! I mean, it’s estimated that all deaths in wars of the twentieth century totaled 108 million dead, and dynamite had a role in all of those deaths, whether via dynamite gun, dynamite as tool against fortifications, dynamite as bombs dropped, miniature dynamite used in guns to propel bullets, molecular dynamite used to create white phosphorous and napalm, chain-dynamite charges used in machine guns, and the occasional hand-to-hand combat (but always conducted with dynamite).

Now, that’s not quite hundreds, so you have to add in all of those who died from the Holocaust (conducted with dynamite), the Holodomor (which is Russian for “dynamite”), and The Great Leap Forward (so named because the constant use of dynamite caused bodies to be propelled as if they had jumped).

Also, cancer is caused by cellular level dynamite, so that probably puts us well over the top.

It’s a good thing we never used any of our atomic dynamite arsenals, or we’d be talking deaths in the billions from dynamite!

Edit: really, Nobel has a lot to answer for when you think about it, not least of which is rewarding Jimmy Carter
