The final season is what the movie ended up becoming, IIRC. You can definitely tell from how tightly choreographed the first three episodes and interviews with him in the intervening years that it was what Genndy had had in mind for the opening half.

Castle is the only bit of Lupin III that I’ve ever watched. It’s fairly good standalone (it’s a Miyazaki flick, so duh), but I remember reading how some fans of the overarching Lupin III franchise thought that it was one of the wimpier interpretations of the titular character.

My big thing is that the first two seasons never really felt like they were going anywhere when taken together. The first ended on a decent cliffhanger that seemingly irreversibly changed the status quo, only for the second to roll most of that back within a few episodes... and then it ended on a pretty similar setup, so I’m wary of getting burned again.

I’ve definitely wondered what the AU where Lovecraft lived at least past WW2 would have looked like. There’s... at least some stories (Herbert West, Reanimator comes to mind) where it would have been relatively easy to excise the most racist elements while still keeping the overall plot the same. Though then there’s ones like the story about a guy who killed himself not because he figured out that he had a monkey goddess as a recent ancestor... but because he realized that meant that he had ancestors from the wrong parts of Europe.
