I took an animation class with the guy who was lead animator on Bowler Hat Guy and who was super proud of the animation they did on it, but apparently Jeffery Katzenberg hated the character. He was reduced to a smaller part in the movie because Katzenberg hated him so much, and every time footage of that character came up in reviews that Katzenberg was in, he would call for that character to appear less and was just totally disgusted that he was necessary in the movie.

Jeeze, how long was that thing in production? Do you mean Lasseter? He was the 'no more traditional Disney villains' guy. (Instead he liked the affable types who were friendly to the hero until it turns out they were assholes the whole time. Hmmm)

Bowler Hat Guy is in no way a traditional Disney villain, though.

He was very traditionally camp though. (though yes, he did have awesome backstory)

And only one narrates at that. We never hear the thoughts of anyone besides Spirit himself.

Is he talking about the tv show maybe? They might talk in that, idk.

Nope, that's tween girl horse adventures in a very sanitised Wild West, but no talking horses. I only watched the first few seasons, which are actually rather charming, but man was the Spirit brand just shoehorned on there. Spirit is now paling around with tweens and having cute slice of life adventures. Wait, being wild and free and not letting anyone ride him except that one time was the whole point of the movie? Actually it's his son, it's fine.

Anyway, we watched Lion King 2 tonight. Good movie (ignoring the obvious "where were all these lions in the first movie?") but boy howdy you can really tell they spent all the money getting 90% of the original voice cast back. Characters stayed on model, but so many of the shots were comically static. Lots of "lions standing in front of sky." A huge lol at Zira's death, where they just take one frame of animation for her entire fall. A couple of the songs could have used another pass, but it's really hard to measure up to the original. My Lullaby is still a spectacular number.

To be fair to Zira's death, that was down to cutting to hide the fact that she actually killed herself there.

It's such a shame Lion King 2 was at the very start of the DVD craze. Imagine if it had the same animation quality as the goddamn Timon and Pumbaa movie!
