The point of overwatch traps is that if the pod makes contact on their turn, they get blasted and then it's immediately your turn after.

Making contact with pods in the middle of moving on your turn means that you'll get like half a turn of attacks on them before their full turn

Is there a mod or something that stops pods from literally always moving in the exact opposite direction you want them to

I can tune a fish.
I know it's par for the course with chuds, but imagine not being able to detect any kind of political slant in the previous XCOM games. And also ignoring that some of the most popular mods are the ones that import, say, the entire cast of Mass Effect.

Speaking of are any of the other Bureau DLCs worth the 2$ it would take to pick them up?

If I remember right, Code Breakers is basically just a one-off bonus mission for the campaign. It's maybe mildly interesting but there's no big payoff to it or anything. Reeks of repackaged cut content or a totally normal mission that was cut out to serve as pre-order fodder.

I thought Hangar 6 R&D was a mini-campaign expansion pack kind of thing but apparently it's actually more like a wave-based horde/arena mode thing that tries to be a prequel to the events of the main game in a way that makes no sense?

Probably both easy skips unless you're one of the five people who really like the game.

Die Rettung fuer die Landwirte:
I've played some of Chimera Squad and I have gripes.

Specifically, the breaching is nice, but it feels like everyone goes for maximally disadvantageous spots in cover. I had breaches where half of my squad was flanked from the outset and I had people go down because before I could move those dumb fucks into cover. The maps are so small that you can often not prevent flanking.

A single-duration stun appears to be useless because it wears off on the enemies turn. That was not a fun surprise.

I had another fun surprise when one of the snake people ensnared one of my dudes, I shot the snake monster, then it immediately re-ensnared that person even though it wasn't its turn, and that was another one down.

The reinforcements appear to be infinite monster closets and if you are a dumbo like me and trigger an objective before thoroughly reloading and healing and repositioning you get swarmed. This is especially infuriating because they just got rid of a very similar weakness from the earlier XCOMs with monster pods only to reintroduce it this way…

All in all I think I like the overall direction, I think. The general thrust of the game is fine, but some things annoy the hell out of me.

Do you own Hitman 2016? It SHOULD detect that, otherwise if you don't own it, there's a 20$ DLC that upgrades it.

The base key that I gave you has the base Hitman 2 game: the short intro level, then Miami to Sgail. That's a fuckload of content, enjoy!

For the "perfect" Hitman 2 experience, get the 2016 levels into it, and play those through to the second season, and enjoy the finale at Sgail. Then decide if you want to pay for two more good levels or not - New York Bank and the Island Resort.

It feels like a test bed for changes in XCOM 3, and I'm glad it exists because it'll let them fiddle a lot with the hits and the misses. Lots of folks hated Thrones of Britannia for example, the Total War game, but most of the features most positively reviewed in Three Kingdoms came from it - the more experimental, cheaper side game. I like this model a lot.

I played about an hour of Chimera squad and I really like it so far. I can see how it'd be a bit thin for a full-sized globe-spanning XCOM 3 but I hope some of the mechanics come back in some capacity. Maybe there could be smaller-scale building raid missions that use the breach mechanic, or they could use it for UFO assaults or something.

I do quite like the game being balanced around no-cooldown abilities; kind of like how DOOM eternal gave you a free pip of chainsaw ammo, I feel way more empowered and encouraged to actually use the cool tools the game gives you instead of hoarding them for a moment that doesn't come.

I think that's the best thing about chimera squad, there's a wide variety of abilities and you get it use at least one every turn. It's not xcom light, it's focused and condensed. Breach is a much more interesting way to start a mission than the overwatch plod.

Yeah, it's a bit more of a playground. It's like the difference between that old D&D spell memorization style and new RPGs
it's more fun to be able to use the abilities

I tried the free play of XCOM 2 and have been put off the whole thing when two of my starter squad started wailing that they wanted to go home and then died horribly.

Have I become soft in my old age, or has "realism" gone a bit fetishy/torture porn these days (see modern Tomb Raider games)?

The XCom 2 bundle is a fantastic deal and I highly recommend checking that out if you've played the first game already. XCom 2 on it's own was kinda meh but WOTC really makes it a complete game.

Yes.

Except the edit.

But for real, XCOM 2 is probably your best bet in terms of a purchase; big game, a few refinements to XCOM 1 formula). If you get this, might as well get the bundle.

By all accounts Chimera Squad is good too, but a different formula and relatively short. Haven't played it but I imagine it gives a different feel, especially with its pre-determined squad.

However, if you feel thrifty or reluctant to spend your money for any reason, then just play Enemy Within. That's still good too, and it sounds like you already own it.

Do people like the interwoven turns? I've play a few missions and I feel like they make the game slightly worse, but maybe I haven't seen the cool stuff it lets you do. For now, it seems like it just forces you to shoot the guy whose turn is next because that's just way more important than shooting anyone else. Not a deal breaker or anything but not super into this one mechanic.

Several of the DLCs are just cosmetic packs, so there are complaints about that.

Alien Hunters is EXTREMELY divisive - there are giant arguments over whether it's fun or THE MOD KILLED MY BABY and the XCOM thread consensus is that you should try it for yourself. I personally think you should try it on your second or later playthrough - NOT your first, as it changes up mechanics in some extreme ways.

The other DLC I think has been agreed upon to be good, or otherwise ignorable.

I don't know if there is one or not, but it feels like there ought to be a way to slow enemies or knock them down in the turn rotation or something
I don't think it's better or worse so far it's just a little underbaked in the early parts at least

War for the chosen owns and the new classes it adds are fantastically fun.

Alien Hunters is bad and not good. It's better than it was on release since they changed how its implemented into the campaign but it introduces a few boss-tier monsters that are just utter horseshit and unfun. The war of the chosen bosses feel way better designed for xcom, definitely get that instead.
